Black Friday - the day after Thanksgiving which marks the start of the Christmas shopping season. Crazy deals and even crazier shoppers will be out that day - some in line as early as before midnight to be the first in at the doorbuster sales.
If you want to be one of those (not me!), here's some upcoming sales ads that might help you plan your day.
And if you're an Apple Computers fan, Black Friday is the one and only day that Apple stores have a sale. The rumored sales at Apple are:
Up to 30% off all iPods (except iPhone and Shuffle)
Up to 25% off all Macs
Up to 15% off all accessories, Apple software, and Apple hardware
But your best bet is to make sure you pick up a Honolulu Advertiser on Thanksgiving day and scope out all the ads.
The Thanksgiving edition of the Honolulu Advertiser is the thickest newspaper of the year packed with ads. It always brought me joy to receive the Thanksgiving edition. Maybe because it marked the start of the Christmas season, or it meant that a tasty turkey meal was about to be consumed, or probably just the holiday spirit. An MLC memory that still lives on.
Mahalo to C0hiba for asking me to list the Black Friday ads.
Even if you're not planning on fighting the crowds, it's a excellent way to get great gift ideas.
So, where do you stand on your Christmas shopping? Are you brave enough to venture out on Black Friday? If you do pop into Ala Moana Center, I'll be in Apple store.
Don't forget - Triad blogger party tonight at Fort Street Bar & Grill. 6:00 pm until whenever. Come on down and meet Anklebiters IRL - as he's home for his annual visit.
If you didn't visit my Monday post: HBMDR Give2Live Charity Event, take a look. There was a nice comment that I posted from Rob Kimura of Greenwood congratulating Annie, Roy, and all the volunteers on a great job - and Rob's first time ever that he performed with his cousin from Glass Candle. How cool is that!?!
It was such a joyous night, the music was pumping, the food was coming to the table, and the drinks were flowing. Really flowing at our table anyway.
And after the event, since I was the designated driver - me, Paula, and opso stopped by a restaurant/lounge/karaoke place for a nightcap.
Or two. Or three. But who was counting.
Then came Saturday morning...
Not "really" a hangover - just a skosh nagging headache in the back of her head (so Paula claims). We got up and had our coffee, then Paula headed back to bed. When she got up the second time and asked me to get her some McDonald's fruit punch and a saimin, I knew. She had a hangover.
Being the good husband that I am, I went out and got her the fruit punch and saimin as requested (and a No. 1 for me). After finishing it off, back to bed she went. I went to Ala Moana solo.
Which got me thinking - what is your Hangover Remedy? McDonald's fruit punch seems work for Paula. What works for you?
And don't forget - Triad party happening this Friday at Fort Street Bar and Grill in the Topa Towers (AMFAC towers). 6:00 PM until they kick us out. No host food, drink, and karaoke. Come on out and meet the other MLCers, Lanceformers, and Bees. And maybe a few other Honolulu Advertiser bloggers. Going be good fun!
The best part is, Friday5.org is owned by a local guy.
Here's a little background on how he came up with this weeks Friday5 questions.
Background story: Some friends and I were talking one night about smalltalk and how what most of us want is to get past it and to find out what people really care about. We figured that if you could come up with the kinds of questions that don’t violate social conventions (taboo subjects, for example, or questions that are too personal) but give you an idea of what really matters to the other person, you could jump past smalltalk and get right to the good stuff. Here are five that we thought might work! One of the questions is very similar to a question posted in October three years ago, but that’s okay!
So, I'm sure you know how it's done. Here's the 5 questions:
What are the titles of the last three books you read all of?
What are the titles of between three and five magazines you subscribe to or used to subscribe to?
What’s on your night table? (we figured this one was borderline, since it involves the bedroom, but if the vibe is right and you preface the question with the background story I told above, you could make it work)
What are the three best things that happened to you in the past seven days?
What was your senior yearbook quote, and what would your yearbook quote be this year if there were such a thing?
And here are my replies:
What are the titles of the last three books you read all of?
Hmm, tough one as I'm a "listener", not a "reader". I remember reading all of "A Walk To Remember". And "Talking To Heaven". Before that was... "Cruising with the 'Tooz'"? Although, I just picked up Ben Cayetano's book "Ben" and hope to start reading that soon. I'm also reading "PHP & MySQL Web Development for Dummies". That one's kinda hard to just read. Gotta read, then do, then read more, the do more, etc.
What are the titles of between three and five magazines you subscribe to or used to subscribe to?
Being the shoppers that Paula and I are, we subscribe to what else - Consumer Reports. Been a loyal subscriber for over 10 years. Maybe even 15. Paula subscribes to Readers Digest. Magazines I used to subscribe to were: Bowling This Month, Orchid Digest, and AKA Kiting. Obviously, old hobbies of mine.
What’s on your night table? (we figured this one was borderline, since it involves the bedroom, but if the vibe is right and you preface the question with the background story I told above, you could make it work)
Kleenex, Consumer Reports magazines, Alarm clock/radio, Bowling trophy lamp (not mine), Hand crank flashlight (for when the dogs walk around the room in the middle of the night), Pen, Sudoku book, Prescription glasses, HTML and XML manuals, TV remote, and a slew of different books. Boy, for someone who doesn't read, I sure have a lot of reading material. LOL
What are the three best things that happened to you in the past seven days?
I went to Office Depot on Wednesday and they actually had a memory card - that was on sale - in stock. It was the last one and I got it!
Paula made ono beef stew. The tomato sauce kine - with lots of celery.
I was able to watch part of the UH Warriors vs UNLV football game - standing outside of the Mai Tai bar at Ala Moana.
Bonus: The Raiders beat the Chiefs
What was your senior yearbook quote, and what would your yearbook quote be this year if there were such a thing?
Our senior yearbook didn't have quotes.
If I could put a quote this year: "The internet is just a fad".
Okay, your turn.
And a big mahalo to Friday5.org for supplying me ideas for the MLC blog. Follow scrivener on Twitter!
And don't forget - Triad blogger party happening tonight at Fort Street Bar & Grill in the Topa Towers. See you there!
You know the drill. Cut and paste the questions and answer them them or just answer them by number. Or just answer them. Don't be afraid to elaborate.
What does it take to get you to grab the mic and sing in a karaoke room?
What does it take to get you to give up a whole Saturday to hang out with people you don’t like?
What does it take to get you out of bed without your hitting the snooze button?
What does it take to get you to take someone else's turn at a really unpleasant task at work or home?
What does it take to get you to eat something you really dislike?
Here's my replies:
What does it take to get you to grab the mic and sing in a karaoke room?
It takes at least a mediocre voice - which I don't have. If I do grab the mike - it's just to pass it to Paula. She has a real nice voice.
We should go have a Triad karaoke night some time!
What does it take to get you to give up a whole Saturday to hang out with people you don’t like?
Obligation. If it's with people I don't like, then why should I go? Only if I'm obligated to go. And I'll do my best to be cordial.
I read a book once called "Looking Out For Number 1" way back in the early 80's. One chapter of the book said that if there's people who bring negative feelings to you - then why be with them? It's not healthy. If you don't enjoy their company, don't hang out with them. It's as simple as that. It's your life. You make the decisions of who you want to be around you. Why force the issue - unless you feel a greater obligation. Then suck it up and get pass it.
What does it take to get you out of bed without your hitting the snooze button?
I hit the snooze button 3 times every morning I have to wake up to go to work. Believe it or not, it does help me to wake up. Only on the weekends do I wake up without hitting the snooze button - only because I don't set the alarm.
What does it take to get you to take someone else's turn at a really unpleasant task at work or home?
I'll do it. I won't be happy doing it, but I'll do it.
What does it take to get you to eat something you really dislike?
Why would I eat something I really dislike? I guess if I already put in my mouth and don't want to spit it out, I'll suck it up and eat it. I learned the trick of holding my breath so I don't taste it. Then I'll try to follow it up with something else to change the taste.
What's It Take for you?
And tonight (Friday) the Royan Kunia Street Band (RKSB) will be back at Ige's with guest vocalists from Greenwood - Mike Chock and Curt Takahama sitting in. They plan to do a few Greenwood tunes that are not in the current RKSB play list. Check them out at Ige's Restaurant and 19th Puka.

Hey, isn't that Rob Kimura of Greenwood on the far left?
And finally, TRIAD PARTY time again. Next week Friday (9/25) at Fort Street Bar & Grill in the Topa Towers (AMFAC building). Around 6:00 PM. Come join us as we say Aloha to poster Scott before he relocates back to the Big Big Island (mainland). Other bloggers are invited to attend too. Come down and party with us. Meet the bloggers and posters. There may even a surprise or two.
Let's take a little stroll down memory lane of old Hawaii kid shows. These photos are from The Honolulu Advertiser's Hawaii's 50th Anniversary of Statehood photo gallery.
Robert "Bob" Smith, who hosted the "Captain Honolulu" show on KHVH TV now KITV from 1959 to 1969. Smith first took the character of "Sgt. Sacto," the right- hand man to Captain Honolulu, who was never seen when the show first went on the air, but later he became Captain Honolulu because the children started to know him as that character.

Roland Cloutier, also known as "Chubby Roland," was a popular television personality in Hawai'i during the 1950s and 1960s. Roland entertained the kids with his show for years. He had his regulars who was part of his "Backyard Gang." One of his acts was "Funny Faces #1," where kids would take their turns making funny faces within a picture frame.

Romper Room with Robin Mann aired for the first time in 1964 on KTRG. In 1966, the show moved to KHON and was on the air till 1972. Romper Room was on the air weekday mornings with young children, in a preschool setting. In 1974, KHON began Robin's Room, with Robin as Host. This time the program included children up to 6years old. Two years later, Cec Heftel developed a new series that featured Robin. The program, Roundabout which aired on KGMB, was produced by College students and featured young adults. Roundabout was also viewed on PBS. Photo courtesy of Robin Mann
An event that was part of Romper Room was "Zoo Day," where thousands of kids and parents throughout the years visited the Honolulu Zoo for the day.

Boy, those pictures take you back, don't they. Do you remember rushing home from school to hear this famous jingle?
I barely recall Captain Honolulu. Wasn't it shown in the mornings?
I don't recall Sheriff Ken nor Chubby Roland at all.
And I never did see Romper Room.
But Checkers and Pogo - they were my afternoon buddies!
Do you remember these shows? How about the games they used to play and the funny faces that all the kids sitting on the set of bleachers would make. And what do you remember about "Merry Unbirthday"? Jog that memory and share you stories.
TRIAD PARTY!
