Friday Musings

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Lots of things to list so here we go:

First of all - local boy Shane Victorino made it to the All Star game!  Mahalo to all the MLCers who voted for him.  Local Boy Does Good.

This weekend is the annual Korean Festival as Kapiolani Park.  But remember, it's on Friday and Saturday.  We're planning to be there on Saturday.  To see last year's MLC's Korean Festival recap, visit 2008 Korean Festival.  If you plan on going, you can park at Kapiolani Community College and catch a shuttle to and from the Korean Festival.

Tonight (Friday) 70's band White Light will be playing at Hawaiian Brian's from 8:30 to 11:30 PM.  Remember, they won't be playing at the next 70's Nightclub Reunion so here's your chance to check them out.

Someday I hope to meet Joy
And if you can't make it, you'll have another chance to see them on 7/31/09 at Ige's in Pearl City.

Remember Primo beer?  Well, you've probably heard that it's now available again with a brand new recipe - taste tested by Hawaii's own beach boys.  Well, to celebrate Hawaii's upcoming 50 years of Statehood, a limited edition Draft-only ale is being brewed - Primo Statehood Ale.

“Primo wants to do something special to commemorate Hawaii’s rich history and Primo Statehood Ale is just the right fit,” said Kyle Wortham, Director of Marketing at Primo Brewing & Malting Co. “We’ve created a celebratory craft beer with a different flavor profile from our Island Lager. The new brew is an exceptionally balanced and smooth-drinking Pale Ale with a nice floral hop aroma. We know local people will enjoy it because many locals gave us input on how the beer should taste.”

Ask for it at select bars and restaurants on Oahu and Maui.

Oh, can't forget about shopping.  Kahala Mall has a sidewalk sale this weekend.  Maybe we'll swing over after the Korean Festival.

And you'll probably need some money to go shopping, so check out this site:
Unclaimed Property Search
You may have some unclaimed cash waiting for you.  Or your immediate family members.  Or your relatives.  Or you neighbors.  Or you co-workers.  One co-worker of mine had over $3,000 sitting in there.  She was so happy Paula found it for her, that she treated us to dinner!  And even if you searched before and found nothing, there may have been some money that went in since your last search.

And finally, for KAN and all the other Hawaii transplants in Seattle, here's a hilarious video of the Boomer Blast Seattle that took place on July 4th in Seattle with The Beatboys and The King Pins.

Mahalo to Gail Ohashi for sending me this video

So what are your MLC plans for this busy summer weekend?

2008 Korean Festival

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Well, another Korean Festival has come and gone once again.  And they seem to be growing with every festival.  I suppose the popularity of Korean dramas has spurred an interest in the Korean culture.  That, plus the Korean community in Hawaii is alive and thriving.  The weather was nice and hot, but with a gentle breeze - just enough to catch a wiff of bulgogi as soon as you step off the shuttle.  There were a ton of food vendors so the "buffet technique" was in order - that's where you start at one end, scope out all the offerings, the go straight for the good stuff.  A lot of businesses had their stalls set up with spin the wheel and putting game for giveaway prizes.  And it was refreshing to see Roy Yonashiro from the Hawaii Bone Marrow Registry there signing up potential donors.  He even had an actual bone marrow donor there to share his story of how he contributed to saving someone's life.  There were volunteers taking surveys of the event.  When they asked me whether the Korean Festival should be extended to a 2-day event, they got a definitive yes from me.  So let's see some pictures:

Korean Festival & Word Game

Friday, July 11th, 2008

This Saturday (July 12, 2008) at Kapiolani park is the 7th Annual Korean Festival.

  <--- clickable!

The festival hours are from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM.  Admission is free.  Parking at Kapiolani park is limited.  It is recommended that you park at Kapiolani Community College where a shuttle bus will take you to and from the Korean festival.

For more information, click on the poster above and it'll take you to the Korean Festival Hawaii website.  btw, there is a recipe for Kalbi and Bibim Gooksoo on the site, so check it out.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Since it's Friday, let's have a little fun with a word game.  I'll start off with two "or" things to choose from.  The next person will choose one of the two, then use it to create another "or" set to choose from.  It doesn't have to use all the words of the item chosen nor does it have to have the same meaning.  Also, adding in additional words helps.  For example:
#1: Ginger or Mary Ann?
#2: Ginger.  Ginger or Green Onion?
#3: Green Onion.  Green or Red?
#4: Green.  Greens or Sand Trap?
#5: Red.  Reds or Cardinals
#6: Sand Trap.  Sand Trap or Speed Trap?
#7: Speed Trap.  Speedos or Boxers?
#8: Boxers.  Boxers or Bulldogs?
#9: Bulldogs.  Kaimuki Bulldogs or Kalani Falcons?

  • I'll allow slight variations on words like Green to Greens or Speed to Speedos or Beatles to Beetles - just to keep it interesting.
  • If there are multiple answers to the same posting, use the first one posted.  For example, #4 and #5 were both replies to #3.  Since #4 was first, that's the one to reply to.  As I check in every so often, I'll try to delete the duplicates.  In this case, #5  will be removed.
  • No replying to yourself.
  • Proper names allowed, ie. Dog Chapman, Boulevard Saimin
  • Keep it clean.  Innuendos allowed.
  • Hit the refresh key often.

Ready?  Here we go:

Korean Drama or Chinese Kung Fu?
