Old time Jingles

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

In the Candy thread, OlyKalena mentioned how her kids thinks she’s nuts when she sings the old Redondo Sausage jingle.  Is it the one that goes something like this?

“Yes sir, Redondo’s,
Turn on with Redondo’s,
Redondo’s, that special sausage,
Redondo sausage turns me on!

Is that right, Olykalena?

Every so often, my co-worker sings the Beef-a-roni jingle.

“Beef-a-roni,
We’re having Beef-a-roni,
Beef-a-roni’s fun to eat,
Beef-a-roni’s full of meat,
Beef-a-roni’s really neat,
Hooray, Whee!
From Chef Boy R Di”

…or something like that. :???:

I know, the words are probably wrong, but pretty close, no?  There was one local jingle that I was totally off on the words until maybe about 10 years ago when one night, I suddenly realized that I was singing it wrong since small keed time.  This is how I thought it went:

“Wana kukui,
Above Hawaii,
Is Wonderful, KGMB”

As you know, it should be:

“One of the good things,
About Hawaii,
Is wonderful, KGMB”

At least I got the last line correct.  My wife and I still laugh about it to this day.

There in another jingle that has stayed in my head ever since hanabata days and it pops up every so often - out of nowhere.  Spooky.  Maybe because the last 2 lines of the jingle are subliminal messages - or sure sound like subliminal messages:

“EVERYONE WANTS A SLINKY.  YOU ARE TO GET A SLINKY.”  Okay, just don’t hurt me.

What old jingles come to mind?  Mention them here and I guarantee one of them will stick in your head for the rest of the day.  You can thank me later - like when you’re trying to fall asleep and the jingle just won’t stop.  he, he

The Geico caveman wouldn’t approve of this commercial.

White Light videos from the 70’s Nightclub Reunion

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

It was just over a couple of weeks that I blogged about the 70’s Nightclub Reunion Dance and people are still buzzing about it.

If you didn’t go, this is a sample of what you missed. Here’s White Light performing:

Wish you were there? Well, mark down Feb. 28, 2009 for 70’s Nightclub Reunion #5.

As soon as Greenwood gets their videos up, I’ll be sure to post them. And don’t forget, pictures of the 70’s Nightclub Reunion can be found at The 70’s Nightclub Reunion website.

I remember my first ever slow dance was to “If I Could Reach You” at a Nuuanu Y dance. I don’t remember who the band was though.

Then later, during the disco scene, I remember Natural High playing “Europa”. That was a weird one because it started off as a slow dance then broke off into a fast dance. I also remember Natural High performing Village People’s “San Francisco/In Hollywood” at the Hula Hut. That was a feat in itself as that song was somewhere around 10 minutes!

Can you recall the songs you used to dance to when these live bands used to perform?

Paradise by the Go Phone Light

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Aaaug!

Another classic song - Paradise by the Dashboard Light - butchered by a lame commercial for ATT’s Go Phone.

[youtube Wbr34hZNxro]

Whoa, as I was researching this video to see how Meatloaf would sell out this classic song, I learn that that actually is Meatloaf playing the part of the father in the commercial? And the mother is played by Tiffany - a has been pop singer. The overweight son is Adam Cagley - whoever that is.

At least here in Hawaii, only the shorter version of the commercial is shown.

But why?!? A classic - butchered for a pay-as-you-go phone!

I say he (Meatloaf) sold out. What do you think?

For old times sake - if you want to watch the classic Paradise by the Dashboard Light video, here you go:

Third Time’s a Charm?

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Okay, here’s the third version of the 4 fast dances mix.

Fast Dances V3

Goodbeer already got the first and third songs - Summer Sun and One Fine Morning, respectively. So now, figure out songs 2 and 4
@Goodbeer, if you know them, email them to me or hold off posting them until the end of the day. Let’s see of other readers can guess them

70’s Nightclub Reunion IV was a blast!

Monday, May 12th, 2008

This past Saturday night I relived my past.

The 70’s Nightclub Reunion IV was awesome!
Greenwood started the evening off. It took a little while for the crowd to warm up and shake off the cobwebs from their dance moves - 1 song exactly. By Greenwood’s second song, the dance floor was packed where it remained packed for the rest of the evening.

Greenwood pretty much set the tone for the night with an awesome version of Tower of Power’s “You’re Still a Young Man”. New Experience followed with their funk brand of music and a little bit of Gladys Knight (Neither One of Us) thrown in for good measure. White Light then brought it on with it’s big brass sound - and yes C0hiba, Joy is still singing with White Light. Power Point was right behind them where they really pumped up the place. It was already around midnight, but you would’ve never known it if you didn’t look at a clock. If anyone had ideas of dosing off, Power Point surely woke them up. And finally, Glass Candle wrapped up the evening where they kept all us midlifers dancing into the wee hours of the morning - just like we did in our past. It was about 1:30 AM when the house lights went on, but you could still feel the energy pulsating through the place. So much so, that Tiny Tadani had everyone get up and dance to the Electric Slide just to wind down

It was that kind of an evening.

In this day of electronic instruments and synthesizers, it was nice to hear the sounds of a real horn section. White Light even brought out the cow bell which took me back to the days at Nuuanu Y dances.

There were 2 stages set up side by side so as 1 band was wrapping up their set, the next band was setting up. Tiny Tadani entertained the crowd between bands while the sound checks were going on.

Although it was a “reunion” of these bands, you could never tell. It’s like they’ve been playing together for the past few years. The sound was tight and the band’s chemistry was still there.

And speaking of a reunion, it was a reunion of sorts for a lot of people who attended. Groups of friends getting together, maybe even a social club or two. Why wait for a class reunion to get together with high school buds - this is the perfect venue.

Oh yeah, Tiny announced that 70’s Nightclub Reunion V is already booked for Feb. 28, 2009. As I was talking to Robin Kimura of Greenwood, commending him on what a huge success this event that he and Candy Au have put together, I mentioned that it would be nice to have it more often, like maybe twice a year. Rob whispered to me that it’s already in the works.
