Either You Love It or You Hate It
December 3rd, 2009 by Rodney LeeCilantro aka Chinese Parsley - Hate It!
List time. What are some things that you (or others) either hate it or love it.
Like I mentioned - Cilantro. I can't stand it. Tried to acquire the taste for it, but just can't. Sometimes when there's fried noodles with Chinese parsley in it, I'll pick out all the leaves and stems I can find. But if I miss just one stem, the flavor explodes in my mouth and I want to spit it out.
Some places put Cilantro in their salsa. Fail! I won't touch it.
For Paula, it's coconut. She hates it. Thai food is out of the question.
Beer. Seems like most people either love it or they hate it. Or they tolerate it - for the buzz.
But the list isn't limited to just food and drink. What else can you think of?
Pee-wee Herman. Love him or hate him.
Jazz. People either love it or don't listen to it. Me, I love jazz. Specifically "smooth" jazz over "fusion" or New Orleans style jazz. Throw in a saxophone and I'm mellowed out.
Cold Weather. Another love it or hate it. Paula and I love the cold weather. That's why we go to Las Vegas in the winter. We get to bundle up in multiple layers of clothing and I get to wear my long "duster" riding coat.
On one trip to Vegas, it was pretty cold at the time so we pulled into a Starbucks and ordered a hot coffee. Other people were inside the cafe enjoying their drinks. But not us. Paula and I were the only 2 people sitting outside on the cold metal furniture, passing the one cup of coffee back and forth to each other warming up our hands. The people inside must've been watching us and thinking "Hawaii folks".
Hot Weather. Hate it! Vegas in the summer is too hot! I don't care if it's "a dry heat". Every time we step outside, it's like the oven door just opened right in our face.
Shopping. Okay, I can't pass this one up. I love to shop. Paula loves to shop. There's nothing like browsing around and finding a good - no, make that - a great deal. Like a $60 pair of a name brand jeans for $9.99. It's like a treasure hunt! The deals are out there - it's up to you to find them.
Mac Computers. Should I even go there? It's almost as though the Conservatives like the PCs and the Liberals like the Mac. The wound up corporate types believe it's PC or nothing. And the laid-back geek (with a lot of toys on their desk) will jump at any chance to work on a Mac.
Texting. "Gotta have it" or "No, why should I pay extra when I can just call the person". Until you start using texting, you don't really realize how it's different than just making a call.
I text. Not a lot, but I don't think I can live without it.
Waking Up Early. I don't want to mention names, Ocean Lover, but some folks love to wake up early and make the most of their day. Luckily, Paula is like me and we enjoy sleeping in late. I'd like to be able to wake up early while the day is still fresh, but... no can! I figure - why fight it. If I'm a night owl, I'm a night owl.
So put on your thinking caps and think of things: such as Wool, Facebook, Firecrackers, Politicians, TV Personalities, Commercials, Hazelnut, Garlic, Mayonnaise - I'm sure there are a lot of things you can think of that people either love or people hate (or don't care for).
And finally...
Nostalgia - Either you love it or you wouldn't be here reading Midlife Crisis.

Moi?
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:04 pm
I love Chinese Parsely! In BaLe sandwiches, Chinese Chix Salad, Salsa... yum! I don't like coconut. Don't eat haupia. Scrape off all the flakes from frostings. No coconut Napples, JinDoi, etc.
Rod: is this gonna be another "one item per post"? Are we trying for another thousander?
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:08 pm
Mint Chocolate - I'm the only person in the world who hates it. I think it's like eating chocolate with toothpaste. Yuck!
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:12 pm
bbh808: but mint choc chip ice cream is my fave.
Dancing: YES!!!
Sitting and just listening to the music: Not physically possible
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:23 pm
Not going for another 1,000 but I'll leave it up to the posters
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:24 pm
sally - Most people I know love mint chocolate everything. I'm the only ODD one.
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:25 pm
Wow! New post!
Ooh, I know one: Dr Pepper
I lurve Dr Pepper! But people who don't like it HATE it.
I dunno how many people have told me "I dunno how you can drink that cr@p! It tastes like medicine!"
That's okay, more for me!
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:26 pm
Early riser: I've been trained since elem school.
Late riser: Daylight's a-wasting
This really causes a glitch in my body clock on the weekends.
And, with this, good night.
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:26 pm
sashimi - Love it!! Anykine fish. With some shoyu and wasabi! No even need rice!
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:28 pm
bbh808: what about orange flavored chocolate? yum!
BananaFysh: yes... more for you. It does taste like medicine!
Fo' real now, good night.
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:31 pm
sally - I've had that before. From See's I think. THAT is ok. Toothpaste not so much. Good Night!!
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:34 pm
I'm with Paula on coconut.
Jazz--all kinds.
Rap--no way.
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:35 pm
@BananaFysh - Yes! Dr. Pepper! I love it. When we're in Las Vegas, I drink Mr. Pibb - their equivalent to Dr. Pepper.
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Natto is one of those things. I love it! Especially on Nattochos from Gyotaku.
I can't eat cilantro. I can't get past the smell.
And one more. I love uni at the sushi bar. Yum!
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:37 pm
@sally - orange flavored chocolate - yuk! Almost as bad as raspberry flavored chocolate.
Paula actually
doesn't likedoesn't care for chocolate.December 3rd, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Heya @konaish! Natto. I've yet to try it. Have some in the freezer. I heard it's very good for controlling cholesterol. A Japanese scientist was eating natto for lunch when some of it dropped into a petri dish that had some cholesterol in it and it began to dissolve the cholesterol.
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:43 pm
@Konaish - speaking of sushi bar - unagi. Too fishy tasting for me. Hate it.
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:44 pm
Tripe - Hate it!
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Tripe - Love It!
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Ice Cream - love it
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:49 pm
cilantro - hate it
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:51 pm
fruity beers (apricot, blueberry, peach) - Hate hate hate it. If I want a fruity alcohol drink, I'll order a cocktail....or drink kids cough medicine. BLECH!!
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:52 pm
Rap music - not into that.
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:53 pm
Oatmeal....small kid time, my mom used to put raisins in it so I would eat it...as if raisins could mask the taste....yuckkkkkkkk!
Natto....another yuck. Russ made me try it in sushi. I was polite...drank plenty water.
Chocolate covered any kine insect - another yuck!!! One time, someone gave my friends and me chocolate candy in different colored wrappers. Told us to try it, then he'd tell us what it was. While we were eating it, he told us one was ants, one was bees and the other was caterpillar. Spit, spit, spit..... Luckily, (if there's such a thing) I had the ants cuz I would have gagged if it was the caterpillar. Had to rinse my mouth out cuz the feelers and legs were stuck in my teeth....yechhhhhhhhh!!
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:56 pm
Beer - living in the microbrewery heart of the USA, I'd say BEER is a love, even if I hardly drink it. Some like wine with food, I'd prefer a good beer.
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:59 pm
@Largo -- I like Mr. Pibb too!
I just had a burrito today, and added a whole bunch of cilantro on top! Yum!
December 3rd, 2009 at 10:59 pm
@ Rodney...I believe natto could dissolve cholesteral! In fact, it could probably dissolve paint.
Sorry Russ. I feel like wiping my tongue now, just the thought of eating it that one time. I need water. Ha, ha!!
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:01 pm
MLC Blog - love love love it.
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:02 pm
@ David...wish I could like beer, it always looks so good when others drink it. I like wine, except I'm plastered after a few sips...so much for that.
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:06 pm
@Seattle Gail: You probably just haven't had the right beer yet. Like wine, there is so many different beers out there, it's mind boggling.
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:07 pm
texting - at work = love it, at home = hate it (and no need for it).
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:08 pm
mmmmmm, beeeeer.
"Beer: The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems."
---Homer Simpson
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:09 pm
Hot Weather - hate it, hate it, hate hate hate it. Did I mention that I hate it? I always feel drained and sluggish when it is hot.
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:13 pm
Cold weather - absolutely love it. As long as it isn't ridiculously cold, like minus 20 degrees, I'll take it.
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:21 pm
MLC posters and readers - love love love it.
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:23 pm
Waking up early: Hate it! Waking up early is so overrated!!
In fact, my brother always tells me that I don't go to sleep, I hibernate!
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:25 pm
Rodney: eh by the way, what's with the "duster riding coat?" Are you trying to become Hop-a-long Lee or what?
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:45 pm
@DIO - Driza-bone Riding Coat:
http://www.walkabout.com/shop/coat-dz-durapelriding.asp
Although mine isn't "oiled" - it keeps me "dry as a bone".
And for a 3/4 length coat, it's full length for me. LOL
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:46 pm
Ironing - Hate, Hate, Hate it! I used to work with this lady who enjoyed ironing.
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:57 pm
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:58 pm
Rodney: that's the problem with a lot of us Hawaii folks, eh? Other people have to look at "regular" or "long" lengths. A lot of the Hawaii folks have to get the "short" length.
I have a couple of trenchcoats to wear with more formal clothes in my closet, and both of those are "short" length. Both of those come down past the middle of my shins. I don't want to see what a "regular" length coat would be like. I can imagine it would look like I was Cousin ITT from the Addams Family.
December 3rd, 2009 at 11:59 pm
Ironing - hate it as well.
December 4th, 2009 at 12:11 am
@DIO - yup. Too bad no more Sato Clothiers - where they specialized in "local lengths". LOL
December 4th, 2009 at 12:13 am
Reading instructions (before putting something together) - I love to read the instructions before starting work on it.
December 4th, 2009 at 3:55 am
Licorice (or anything that smells similar like anise or fennel) - hate
Liver - hate. I felt like the luckiest kid on earth when growing up because my dad couldn't eat liver so we almost never had it. I would dread when he went to neighbor islands for golf or business because my mom would sometimes seize that opportunity to serve liver for dinner.
@Rodney: I thought the only city folks who wore duster riding coats were bikers
The oiled ones do keep you pretty dry even on a motorcycle in the pouring rain.
December 4th, 2009 at 4:04 am
Liver- Hate it. My Mom made us eat it when we were little....I think I threw it up and my Dad got mad at her. Hah!
Cilantro- Absolutely love it! In Pho, anything Mexican (food that is), even in salads!
December 4th, 2009 at 4:07 am
@konaish #15 - you can't get by the smell of cilantro, yet you eat Natto & uni??? Yikes!
Hate - Psycho Xs.
December 4th, 2009 at 5:13 am
Good Morning!
Natto: Love it when it's made w/ my friend's recipe. She even takes it to work and no one knows its natto... no more smell!
Seattle Gail: "dissolve paint" bhahaha Russ has an ongoing unscientific survey that he claims says people who like natto also like chinese parsley. We'll just let that keep him busy. ha!
December 4th, 2009 at 5:15 am
Okay....I'm too LAZY to read Rodney's WHOLE POST but need to add something as my conscience is boddering me:
LOVE IT: Dr. Pepper, Cotton Candy, Caramel
HATE IT: Celery, Cilantro, Liver, Gizzards, Tripe, Bell Peppers, Natto
Guess the stuff that I LOVE are all SWEET............cuz I'm a SWEET GUY!
OL..........called out and hopefully delivers!
December 4th, 2009 at 5:15 am
I ack ack sashimi. It looks so ono when people eat it so I've tried it 3 separate times in my life. I can't get past the texture and end up spitting it out. Ahi poke tastes really ono if you fry it up in a pan the next day.
December 4th, 2009 at 5:21 am
I'm eating oatmeal as we speak... type. I put peanut butter, cranberries, and soy milk. yum. Love it.
December 4th, 2009 at 5:25 am
Rod: you "love to read instructions..." What's wrong with you?
Paula "doesn't care for chocolate" what's wrong with her?
bhahaha!
I love liver w/ onions, bacon, mushrooms, peppers, over rice w/ ketchup.
I don't know about lamb. Can't get past the smell.
December 4th, 2009 at 5:33 am
Funny, just yesterday co-worker was talking about hating cilantro with a passion which is why he doesn't like oxtail soup...what okinawan doesn't love oxtail/pig's feet soup?
Can't think of a food I hate...will try most anything, and I love cilantro, coconut, natto, tripe, and will drink Dr. Pepper, but the beer I don't understand is Guinness. Some think it is the greatest beer ever but I don't get it...has a funny-burnt bitter taste.
I hate the Zippy's commercial where the kid has spaghetti sauce all over his face.
December 4th, 2009 at 5:34 am
Sally - Russ' unscientific study: I love natto, but like Rod, veer away from cilantro (it poisons my food). . . BUT, have to have it cooked in oxtail soup, or it's just not the same.
about sashimi - I'm aaaaaaacckkkk aaacccckkkkk like you (it is the mouth feel), but that goes for most, if not all, seafoods. It just stinks. Can't get it near my nose.
Frosting of any kind gets scraped off and dumped, even the chantilly frosting on Liliha Cocopuffs. OK, well at least for the chantilly, I leave it in the box aside from the puffs, or ask who wants it before dumping. Can't tolerate sweets.
I don't feel THAT strong for things like TV (don't own one for over 10 years now), Internet phones - don't feel a need to "gotta have". Coconut is not something I'll seek out either, but I do like the coconut water.
December 4th, 2009 at 5:57 am
Mac vs PC: I'm not so one or the other, I just want one that works.

Talking stories w/ the Triad: Love it!
Getting moderated: FAIL!!!
December 4th, 2009 at 6:20 am

Supes: I know you're all about Jack, but you really gotta try Basil Hayden. It's so guuud.
December 4th, 2009 at 6:25 am
Aigoo - sneaky Rodney, differently-time post! And I didn't check last night!
Love: cilantro (the more the better), chocolate (dark), unagi (this is a joke in our office - one of my bosses loves it too, and everyone else hates it), sashimi, coconut flavor and toasted coconut, just about all kinds of jazz (except some of the more "modern" jazz and bop),
Hate: natto, all beers EXCEPT Guinness (sorry hema), unroasted coconut flakes, rap, high humidity, bean sprouts, beets.
More in the love/hate category on Food Network:
Love: Alton Brown ("Good Eats"), Mario Batali, Duff Goldman ("Ace of Cakes").
Hate: Bobby Flay, Rachael Ray, Sandra Lee.
December 4th, 2009 at 6:27 am
Good morning Rodney and MLCers!
wow! 60 post already.
I love cilantro, I can just eat it plain.
Theirs not too much food that I don't like. I have to think about that...
December 4th, 2009 at 6:37 am
Texting: Not essential to my life but it comes in handy when I'm in a class and I send one to my boss "bad class, outta here".
Texting also came in handy when I was in Vega$ when that earthquake hit and Oahu lost power. It was how I found out and how I stayed in touch.
December 4th, 2009 at 6:43 am
No texting or twitter. I rather talk to the person.

Cilantro aka Chinese Parsley - Hate It!
WOW! Exactly my feelings for cilantro except for the last sentence. My boss makes the greatest salsa, with avocado in it and everything, and I LOVE the zing that cilantro adds to it. But yes, in Chinese noodles and salads and everything else I can't stand it!
December 4th, 2009 at 7:43 am
oh, wait, we talking love it or hate it stuff...like, love dogs or hate cats.

Love: MLC - There are certain benefits to being a MLC like lower golf rates!
Hate: MLC - I have aches and pains now that I never had before!
December 4th, 2009 at 8:05 am
I'm at work now and just reminded of something I hate: whistling. To me, it is worse than other workplace annoyances like people who wear too much cologne or who pop their chewing gum. I can't even listen to songs like "Young Folks," "Patience," "Don't Worry Be Happy" (that one I would hate even if it had no whistling) or "Winds of Change."
December 4th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Aloha,
I know what you mean about Cilantro. For me it's natto, if I can smell it'll make me gag.
December 4th, 2009 at 8:22 am
@kathi: yup, I agree with the workplace whistling. There are 4 people in my office who whistle, and they whistle off-key! So distracting.
@seattlegail: custard pie!!! Kane`ohe Bakery's custard pie is my favorite dessert on earth. I haven't found a good place in Seattle yet for custard pie, but just about any other dessert @ Bakery Nouveau in W. Seattle (esp. the pear tart with marzipan) comes close.
@hema: Sweetie's sister and her entire family LURVES those chocolate-covered cherries. Meh.
December 4th, 2009 at 8:26 am
Politicians: I like Barak Obama.

December 4th, 2009 at 9:01 am
Hey Seattle Gail...how are you?
I can't think of a food that I don't eat. Love most everything at a sushi bar...raw stuff, all meats and veggies. Yes, love Chinese parsley...always ask for extra in Bale sandwiches and pho. Beer is definitely a favorite.
Hate: partisan political reporters and writers and overboard political correctness.
December 4th, 2009 at 9:17 am
I don't hate beer, I just don't drink it. Same for any alcoholic beverage.
Hate is a strong term, I rather say I don't like it.
Still can't think of any food I don't like....
December 4th, 2009 at 9:21 am

December 4th, 2009 at 9:30 am

December 4th, 2009 at 9:32 am
yes I enjoy to travel if the location is peaceful....NO ONE SITS AROUND SMOKE AT MY FACE WITH STINKY TEETH GLARING AT ME!
December 4th, 2009 at 9:34 am
I agree with @Kathi - Licorice: Yuk. Others love it. When I was small and got a penny for the gumball machine, guess which one I had the knack of getting? Yup, the black licorice one. FAIL!
December 4th, 2009 at 9:34 am
I like to play with snakes but cannot stand the sight of a gecko.....I forced myself to hold a Boa constricter hoping it would me get over my gecko phobia...turned out I liked the snake but still hate geckos.....
December 4th, 2009 at 9:35 am
I don't like licorice either....
December 4th, 2009 at 9:50 am
@masako, I don't like mints but I don't hate it. I will eat it.
December 4th, 2009 at 9:54 am
cilantro - i lurve it! i used to hate it before......until i had it in oxtail soup.....then i began to like it.

December 4th, 2009 at 9:56 am
KAN - YAMAIMO! YAMAIMO! YAMAIMO! haha!!
December 4th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Liver - love it. Hate to cook it, but if someone else cooks it, love it.
Hazelnut - HATE it. Yeah, really hate it.
Raspberry and raspberry flavored anything - hate it.
@KAN- agree with you on the Kaneohe Bakery custard pie. Even better than Kilani Bakery in Wahiawa. And thats the one I grew up eating.
Used to hate cilantro growing up, now I eat it. Can't say I love it, but I need it for my salsa. My theory is that as we age, our tastebuds fade. So then the really pungent stuff no taste so bad.
December 4th, 2009 at 10:45 am
@opso: ugh, yamaimo. Slimy.
I don't like licorice either.
Blue cheese - I love it, but I think I'm developing an allergy to it. Sweetie loves it and he's really allergic to it. I have another friend who says he'd sooner eat the dead than eat blue cheese.
I lurve cats and like dogs. I hate centipedes. Got bitten by one a long time ago and my toe swelled up.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:10 am
I HATE it went the guy hAS TOOHTPICK AND spits.!
December 4th, 2009 at 11:11 am

I'm a lover mayonaise & spam. HATE miracle whip.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:28 am
@KAN - I got bit by a centipede too. On the back of my head while asleep. AND it was the night before my math final. Good thing it was a small(really small) one. It still hurt.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:32 am
There was this co-worker that use to catch the centipede, cut off the stinger and let it crawl all over his arm and shirt.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:33 am

December 4th, 2009 at 11:36 am
I hate prudes...give me an adventurous, forward thinking girl with an open mind any day!
i also hate being in line at the market the day after EBT cards get recharged and seeing carts full of steaks, seafood, beer and other high-end foods. I hate thinking that my tax dollars are paying for these guys' afternoon kanikapila somewhere...
I am pretty adventurous when it comes to food...I will try anything at least twice. If I don't like it the first time I give it a pass, may be it was a fluke/ off day. if I try it again and don't like it, then I know it was no fluke the first time. Can't just dismiss it outright the first time, right?
December 4th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Hate - that glutteral galla galla sound with throat then being spit on the sidewalk in all it's glistening glory or even worse, swallowed back up...a bit gross for me. Ojisan did that all the time.
December 4th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
oooh, how could I forget liver - hate it. When we'd go out to eat, my dad used to order it rare. Even the waitress taking the order would go, "eeew"
December 4th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Liver and onions, yummy...I like it.
December 4th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
@KAN If I find a good custard pie in Seattle, I'll let you know. Have you been to Despi's Delite Bakery (Filipino bakery on Beacon Hill)? The best doughnuts...huge; ensemada's, rolls, butter bread, sheet cakes, etc. I'll have to try their custard pie. Will have to try Kaneohe Bakery...thanks!
@visitor Hi ya! I'm freezing in Seattle..could use some warmer weather!
Love sashimi, sushi too.....love poke!
@hemajang...that galla galla comment just brought back memories of my dad spitting out the car window...ewwwwww!
December 4th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
I like oxtail and pig feet soup with lots and lots of cilantro and ginger
December 4th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
When I was young I didn't like to eat poi but now I love it....day old poi is even betta.
December 4th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
I hate the smell of sardines before bed time especially when I just wash the bedsheets then my husband breathing on me before bed time....I HATE LOUD SNORE!
December 4th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
his stinky teeth ..his sardines face then snoring at me!
December 4th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
so I get even I EAT GARLIC THERE GO !
December 4th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
OH I hate it when my husband "friends" call early or while we eat..my husband is not to answer the phone while we eat or too early...HE CAN ONLY TALK AROUND TWO after that NO MORE!
December 4th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Great blog topic Largo!
I did a ctrl f search and did not find this one. What about Cigar smoke? Most people hate it. I just love a good cigar with a good good cognac or single malt after dinner. Or a good cigar at the black jack table, outside by the shark tank at Golden Nugget.
Speaking of scotch, there's smokey flavor scotch called Laphroaig. Scotch drinkers either love or hate the strong smokey flavor. I love it.
Regarding custard pies, there's a Paul's Bakery in Kalihi that makes an excellent one.
BTW, nice to see all you old farts last Saturday night. Sorry had to run so quickly. The warden gave me only an hour off for R&R.
December 4th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Now that it's the holiday season...fruitcake. Hate it!
December 4th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
@opso The poke nattochos at Gyotaku have yamaimo in them, too.
Chocolate covered mint brownies from Big Island Candies, opihi, raw
a'ama crab - love 'em!
December 4th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
I quit smoking over 40 years ago but did the pipe thing for a while and it had kinda nice flavor and smell to it, depending on the tobacco. Cigarette or cigar smoke doesn't bother me and pipe tobacco actually smells good.
December 4th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
Love oysters. I've had it raw but prefer grilled lightly over coals with shoyu-ginger. Some are disgusted by slimy texture and the innards part. I also like opihi but kinda rich for me and can't eat too many.
like konaish, don't like fruitcake, eggnog too....bah, humbug.
December 4th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
Rod,
There is nothing I really hate (another 4 letter word), I just haven't aquired a taste for it or it doesn't really turn me on, kinda like SUP (sorry NKHEA & M),Mac's, mushrooms. I even tried Fois Gras (sp), it has unusal taste but don't hate it.
I will favor one thing over another, but will never totally dislike it, I guess if there is only one thing that I might consider "hating" is making "a**" out of myself. I am even considering short boarding, but it's a big "considering".
As I start to get older I'm starting to realize it is my thinking that makes life hard, think positive and life is positive. And the more time I age the more I have to start looking into myself to get the answer.
Sorry to seem so blah! ! ,but I guess there is nothing for me to rant on.
December 4th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
@konaish and @hemajng - you're not supposed to actually eat the fruitcake. You hold on to it and pass it along the following year! LOL
December 4th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
@jhmcn - no need to apologize. I love disco too!
And welcome to the MLC blog.
December 4th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
@Issunboshi - Welcome to MLC too! Don't let Queenie know you've visited MLC. j/k Us Triads stick together. Looking forward to more memories - like OP and Hang Ten.
December 4th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
@C0hiba - How about a Hemingway cigar with some Louie XIII. You buy. LOL
Speaking of custard pies - Lee's Bakery (no relationship). That should get @sally's attention.
December 4th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
Wait, give me your fruit cakes, I enjoy eating those, a little margarine, yummmy
December 4th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
@ospo - Paula loves yamaimo. I trip out watching her eat the slimy stuff. She says if she eats too much, it makes her lips itchy.
** Don't go there... This is not O & E **
December 4th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Okay - We're watching the UH football game tomorrow night at Cheers at the corner of King and Koreamoku streets. 6:00 - with BananaFysh.
Thanks Shauna for hooking us up.
December 4th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
I'll take your guys liver (fried with onions) not body parts. No wonder I'm so overweight, that and fruit cakes, I have to go to a resturant for liver and DQ for fruit cakes.
But if you knew I am "Cancer" , we are random & freaks, so we kinda go against the tide. I guess there are exceptions to the rule like Rod & Shauna, mayBEE that's why they host the blogs.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
@opso - what was that stuff you and NKHEA was eating at Yanagi? That one I don't like. Doubt if I ever will.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
Harm-ha. Love it or hate it?
I never had the guts to try it.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:18 pm
Love snowfall at night...the world becomes so quiet, still and peaceful.
December 4th, 2009 at 11:35 pm
@Seattle Gail - I saw snow once. At mt. Charleston in Vegas. Never did see snow falling from the sky. Does flurries count? One time had snow flurries flying down around us in Vegas.
I love snow, but scared to drive on it.
December 5th, 2009 at 12:17 am
@Rodney...yes, flurries count! Snow makes you feel like a kid again!
Funny Fishhead snow story...years ago, took Mr. & Mrs. Fishhead sledding. Mr Fishhead sitting in back of Mrs. Fishhead....sliding down the slope really fast. All of a sudden, he spots dog making doodoo in the snow way in front of him, so he digs in his heels to try and stop the sled and flips over the top of Mrs. Fishhead and ended up head first in snow with legs up in the air like an ant. I laughed so hard, I couldn't walk. I thought this only happen in cartoons!
December 5th, 2009 at 1:39 am
@Seattle Gail: LOL!

Oooooh, LOVE Lee's Bakery Custard Pie. Did you ever see the lines forming in the darkness of morning in Chinatown for Thanksgiving? Unreal.
December 5th, 2009 at 4:24 am
@TwoFish - I have to say that I never had...and probably never will since the airing of the RAT video on KHON TV2. Chinatown got HUGE rats. I HATE rats!
December 5th, 2009 at 4:28 am
RAT story - http://www.khon2.com/content/news/developingstories/story/Rat-Video-Spotlights-Vector-Control-Cuts/BbLSZr9zi0qtNWDLQrByug.cspx
December 5th, 2009 at 6:43 am
@SM808: Ewwww, I've read the stories, but I'm too scared to watch the video. BTW, I thought my dad's friend was your Damien '81 classmate but I was wrong - Bob M. is a Damien '79 grad.
@SeattleGail: I have a Hawai`i friend who lives on Beacon Hill - I'll ask him tomorrow if he's tried that bakery. He has a real sweet tooth, so I'll bet he has. Be careful about snow falling at night - we may get some tonight.
@hema: whoa, because you used to smoke a pipe and loves oysters, I thought you were my dad at first (which would be weird since he doesn't websurf) until you said you didn't like fruitcake! Whew! My dad LURRRRRRRVES fruitcake. My favorite Aunty (his sister) too. Luckily, that preference didn't get passed down to me.
December 5th, 2009 at 6:44 am
hate rats...and mice too. Saw that video and not surprised at rat and kakaroach problem. Ate at this small restaurant last year close to that Pacing vendor and saw this humongous rat scurrying across the floor while we were eating. I had brought my co-workers to this place that made really good jook and tripe with a side order of this ono bread. They didn't see the rat and told them later at the office...didn't want them to lose their appetite. I dunno, will still go eat in chinatown. I haven't gotten sick...yet.
December 5th, 2009 at 7:30 am
Okay Rod, I had to see what else, hate vs. love had to see and then see the word **** "PAHTEE" **** count me in and let me know da scoops.
kay den, dislike people who wait in line then after everything is rung up bust out da check book (didn't know peeps still use checks).
December 5th, 2009 at 7:33 am
Morning all.
Speaking of Foie gras, Hiroshi's at Restaurant Row has this Foie gras sushi.
It's cut to the size of a piece of hamachi, the seared with a teriyaki sauce then served on the sushi rice nigiri style.
Texture is a little weird, and it's really rich.
You either love it or hate it.
December 5th, 2009 at 7:40 am
I love it when a comic strip features the name of a person I know:

C0hiba: I wrote something for you about cigars but posted it next door.
small kine shame.
Okay, I'm over it.
Rod & Supes: sorry, gotta miss the Cmas party. Got another party same night.
December 5th, 2009 at 9:02 am
Sally: my MLC moment this morning was not understanding what you meant "next door" that you meant to post that post here. Maybe that just means I'm a true triad fan. Or maybe that I need more caffeine too!
December 5th, 2009 at 9:13 am
@KAN: but you got it, didn't you? hahaha
December 5th, 2009 at 9:38 am
KAN: now I'm gonna go check in "across the street" at BL's house.
December 5th, 2009 at 9:50 am
Had foie gras at a previous job. It was ok. First time for mango chutney there too. The brand they used was good.
Sorry 12/12 not good for me. Previous engagement.

Have a great time tonight watching the UH game.
December 5th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
I'm with DiO re #184. I used to live above a Candy Cane Lane, and they played "Christmas Don't Be Late" by the Chipmunks INCESSANTLY. I can do a really great Chipmunk imitation (I'm the right size too!) but I hate that d@mn song.
December 5th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Whoa! Guess I'm late! bahhhah....
Loves: CHOCOLATE! hehe.. desserts, rice, chocolate coke, vanilla coke, fruit punch, Hawaiian Sun or Aloha Maid juice, noodles, beef broccoli, creme brulee (luv it so much, can't be in the desserts group), cupcakes 'n chocolate chip cookies too, ketchup, ranch dressing, honey mustard.

BAD customer service!
People who take advantage!
Kids "nowdays" that think they know everything, and can do whatever they like!-when they do something stupid like walk in the middle of the road and look at YOU, like you the one doing something wrong! Heck adults too for that matter!
B-52's, centipedes, spiders, mice and rats!
Long lines, unless you know its gonna be long, then its fun sometimes... like Black Friday before the store opens, or a new, big movie premiere.
December 5th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
Custard pie lovers...try Kilani bakery in Wahiawa....THE BEST!
December 6th, 2009 at 12:11 am
I love: cilantro, Dr. Pepper, fudge
I hate (well, maybe just dislike): bittermelon, nuts, fruitcake.
December 6th, 2009 at 2:14 am
Bittermelon: ack! I think pre-requisite for eating bittermelon is you need to be Okinawan or Filipino. Ex BF's stepmom was so sweet to make me food without bittermelon while on Kauai, altho' her veg garden was most impressive. (same woman who took me to get Korean plate lunch while the men went to the Filipino place). I miss that woman, can't say same for ex BF. ha!
Fruitcake: I swear that is not real food.
December 6th, 2009 at 6:13 am
I love bittermelon and cilantro and not even Okinawan. However, I know an Okinawan who hates both, and don't have hairy arms and legs...disgrace to da race.
Brother hates pumpkin pie so growing up we always had custard and pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving which is great since I'll eat both.
I love foreign movies and don't mind reading subtitles which is a problem for some. In fact, I'll turn on the English subtitles for certain English speaking movies where the dialog/accent is difficult to understand. I'm watching a overly cerebral animated dvd, "Waking Life" that has a lot of characters having low-key philosophical conversations that is hard to hear where animated lip/gestures and voice doesn't match up as irl, so I turn on the subtitles.
Love the feeling that you are protected or doing health maintenance but dislike getting shots or dentist visits or the dreaded...colonoscopy.
December 6th, 2009 at 6:19 am
This morning is tennis day, I love that, but also enjoy just hitting with someone, going through shots, doing drills and playing points w/o keeping score which is absolutely boring for some.
December 6th, 2009 at 7:40 am
@Sally, I not Okinawan or Filipino...but I love bittermelon!! especially stuffed with pork hash....yum
December 6th, 2009 at 7:41 am
@seattle gail, love you too sista!!
December 6th, 2009 at 7:45 am
in my house it has got to be heavy metal classic rock music. Luv lynard skynard, ACDC, Led Zep, Van Halen, etc but my family hates it.
December 6th, 2009 at 8:52 am
Co-worker loves Sinatra, Mel Torme, ballads, and KSSK...rock is unbearable noise to him. Good thing I have a very small separate office where I can listen to my eclectic mix of blues, J-pop, bluegrass, punk, alternative, world, jazz (not smooth), and rock.
December 6th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
my husband will eat anything...!
December 6th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
he can even eat even though he talks about bodily function! OMG of all the time to talk of diarrhea or phlegm at the table..WHY! drives me crazy!
December 6th, 2009 at 12:25 pm

December 6th, 2009 at 12:27 pm

December 6th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
I don't mind getting needle so long as my husband is around just in case I faint light headed WHAT IF I GOT BAD REACTION after the needle he can drive me home! I don't midn the dentist so long as I get a lady that is gentle and she is fast...then I get a tootbrush.
December 6th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
many things I don't mind so long as the rat is not in my house ! when I drive I don't want loud annoying music that I get headaches...so long as I can go to another room they can listen to any music that is why buy a kid a headphone.
December 6th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
I love my alone time watcthing t.v. ..the rain or snow..peaceful quiet time doing nothing but relaxing on my bed getting some sun in the morning.

last one...love soccer, some hate or indifferent to the sport, and will not watch it on tv. I'm a regular viewer of the soccer channel (230). If given a choice, will watch world cup match with USA over NFL super bowl or NBA championships.
December 6th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
Thanks for all your comments, hemajang. Speaking of soccer, back in 1976 when I was taking Data Processing courses at KCC, one of our professors kept telling us how it was going to be his last year of teaching because he was going to get into an up and coming sport in Hawaii - soccer - and become a distributor. We all just scoffed at him.
I wonder how rich he is today...
December 6th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
@sally - next time you listen to Wham's: Last Christmas, listen to the drumming. Makes me love the song and appreciate the drummer.
... maybe it's just me.
December 6th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Largo - yeah.....it's just you.
but not that there's anything wrong with that!

Love: Country music, anything served with gravy, Chinese parsley & NATTO, custard pie from Safeway, carbonated drinks, iced coffee, med-rare ribeye steak, lychee, Peter Cetera/BJ Thomas vocals, Stevie Ray Von's intense playing, Hallmark movies, movies in general, good sushi at Akasaka rest, sensitive people, grape juice, watching fish swim, watching birds fly, historic places, spooky stories, meditation, sleep, Vegas, Epcott Center, how my Mom used to cook, my Dad's work ethics, women with French accents, chocolate milk, sleeping in late, playing my guitar full blast, feeling the high while performing, Jack in the Box commercials, colorful decor, smell of Pikake leis, smell of ethyl (premium) gas, hamachi kama, all animals, looking through old photos of sights/bldg. long gone, short airplane rides, smell of new car, wrist watches, my mom's fried rice, Wailana cold muesli, smell of marihuana, a good sexy/romantic dream.
Hate: Self-centered mainland haoles, rude drivers who don't signal, bad body odor in elevators, bitter melon, papaya, raw aku, waking up early, hot muggy days/nights, feeling old and tired, bad memory, slow traffic, bad service, employees that don't thank you, rising price of gas, all war, deceitful government, people without purpose, people who don't take personal responsibility, cops with bad attitude, anything that crawls, bird droppings on my head, losing hair, having to shave every morning, alcoholic drinks, smell of cigarettes/cigars, dirty restrooms, slow flushing toilets, people who talk too fast/mumble on the phone, island contemporary music (anything reggae!), obese local musicians, tattooed skanky females, Korean dramas, infomercials, Nancy Grace, Rush Limbaugh, VOG!
That's my list for now... All Pau Kau-Kau!

Oh yeah, one more "major" dislikes...smell of females with dirty hair! Ha, ha, ha! Actually...an inside joke regarding a date, many moons ago.
Seattle Gail...you take care of yourself and learn to accept help from others who care.

How about shaving in the morning and again before going out that same evening.
