MLC Reality Check

November 22nd, 2009 by Rodney Lee

Whew! - what a weekend.  Friday night was the Triad (Midlife Crisis, Wassap Wit Dat!, and Odds and Ends) blog party.  Lots of fun as usual.  Not all that many O&E bees, but they'll just have to work their way back up the hive.    Mahalo Jack for the cakes and Anklebiters for the omiyage.

Then on Saturday night, Paula and I attended a wedding.  Our close friend's daughter got married - Congratulations Shana and CJ! But this also was the first wedding we've attended that was for the next generationMLC Reality Check.

I remember when the Cherry Blossom contestants were acquaintances that we knew from school, socials, or nightclubs.  Now they're are acquaintance's daughters.  MLC Reality Check.

"Age is just a number" so we keep telling ourselves, but we can't stay in denial when it comes to events - like our friends "children" getting married.

I think back at our wedding and all my father-in-laws friends that were there.  Is that now us?  MLC Reality Check.

Attending graduations of our friend's kids should've been a subtle hint - but we attend graduations almost every year.  So many people graduate every year.  Friends, cousins, nieces and nephews, colleague's kids.

But to attend a wedding - of the next generation...

MLC Reality Check x 2.

So, we had to do something to feel good about ourselves.  Immediately after we left the wedding, we headed to Waikiki to dance the rest of the night away at The Beat.  A charity event put on to benefit the Kaleoaloha Keiki ChoirSoulz and Powerhouse was rockin' the house.

Since we got there almost an hour before it was scheduled to end, we had some catch-up dancing to do - plus we wanted to work off the food from that wedding buffet.  Here's a few pics:

Beat 2 Us dancing
Dancing off the buffet dinner

Beat 2 Karen and us

Beat 2 Roy Annie and us
Paula, Annie, Roy, and me

Special mahalo to Irwin and Suzi for hooking us up.  And as always, thanks Irwin "Superman808" Santos for allowing me to use your pictures.

But back to the MLC Reality Check...

Okay, so we're growing older - but that doesn't mean the fun has to stop, right?

If you were at the Triad party, you would've seen Sally and Paula doing "air poi balls" (similar to air guitar) to NKHEA singing Masese.  And opso belting out Billy Idol.
MLC Reality Check
(NOT)

Maybe because Thanksgiving is coming up, we tend to reflect on where we are in life - and feel thankful that we've made it this far.  Of course we hope we're living our "midlife" and have another whole half-life (at least) to live.

So as this Thanksgiving holiday rolls around, take a moment to pause and think about how far you've come and how many lives you have touched - and how many lives have touched you.

I know it's a bit corny, but if you want - go ahead and leave a comment or two about things you're thankful for.  Just think of it as an MLC Reality Check.

  1. Rodney Lee:

    I'll start it off ~

I'm thankful that the Honolulu Advertiser has given me this opportunity to write this Midlife Crisis blog. Through this blog, I'm made many, many new friends - friends for life.

But more so, it's allowed us "baby boomers" a place to remember the good ol' days - when life was much simpler. And to share our memories. And feel young again.

  2. Rodney Lee:

And of course, I'm thankful for all the MLC readers and posters. Without you, this blog wouldn't exist.

Whether you post comments or just read, it makes the time I spend writing this blog all worth it.

    Thanks.

  3. Rodney Lee:

I'm thankful for Paula - for supporting me and giving me the space and time to blog. And attending all the functions and having a good time doing so.

And letting me write about her every so often  and being a good sport about it.

  4. Rodney Lee:

Oh! And if you've had any MLC Reality Checks - share them with us!

  5. sally:

    Hi Rod!

This is like a nightcap, I usually wake up to the new blog.

I am thankful for surviving emotional and physical history including, but not limited to, my teenage years, my daughter's teenage years, "difficult" marriage, car wreck, financial loss, emotionally abusive boss (not current one!), loss of many loved ones. Gratitude gives me the perspective to appreciate and live the way I do. I don't allow a whole lot of drama to influence my life, I just live.

    And I live with passion!

Glad you folks were able to make it to The Beat. Great to see you and Paula met Ms Miz. She is a most wonderful big hearted person and she gives the world's greatest huggz!

  6. sally:

My goodness Rod, MLC R.C. aren't any of your friends grandparents yet? And sadly, one of our girls, her husband passed away last year... huge reality check. With all kinds of medical issues being so prevalent at our age, we have become even closer and more loving than before. Too many scares hitting too close to home.

My nephews and nieces are in their mid 30's to 40's so yes, reality check. I've been an aunty since 6th grade and grand aunty since ... gee, 18 yrs ago. Reality check.

My daughter called me yesterday from Vegas. Reality check.

When my niece and her husband bought their second home we had a party there. My brother looked around and said "we've become the Uncle Clarences and the Aunty Betty's of the family". oy.

  7. Rodney Lee:

Sally - I must admit, you know how to live! Being around you, it's hard to tell you've been through what you have. You definitely don't allow drama to influence your life. We could all take a cue off you.

  8. sally:

Great vid Rod, took me back to the concert at HIC... er, Blaisdell. R>C>

Rod, I had to make the choice and "woe is me" was not the direction I wanted. And I saw so many people way worse off than me. My goodness I was lucky!

Hey, another funny reality check. When RBB was asking what bldg I work in and I tried to describe the Interstate Bldg he was all "huh?" and you said "Civic Audtiorium". RBB: "aaaaahhhh yah, ok, I know where dat". LOL

  9. HNL2LAS:

I'm thankful for the blog(s) too! Thanks UR for taking the time to write MLC! heehee.. and thanks to AP for "allowing" you to do so! I have met some of the best people ever thanks to the Advertiser! Who knew I'd meet so many great people on the blogs right??! Thanks everybody!

  10. Rodney Lee:

    @H2L - Aww... :oops:

  11. Rodney Lee:

@sally - yeah, that Civic Auditorium was funny.

    "It is what it is..."

  12. NaPueo:

I'm thankful for family and friends. Also for the opportunity the blogs have given me to meet some wonderful people.

@Sally & Rodney: I too have used landmarks that don't exist anymore to give directions.

  13. Creative:

    Hi Rodney,

It was great meeting everyone on Friday. I definitely had fun. :)

  14. Ynaku:

CHECK! testing one, two, one, two....The mic seems to be working.

OK Reality Check time. Few years ago, I conducted the wedding of my first daughter. Three years ago my G-Baby girl was born. Next year she starts Pre-school, then Elementary school. Next thing you know, Middle school, High school then Graduation. Hope I'm alive to conduct her wedding too.

  15. sally:

    Ohayoo Gozaimasu!

Ynaku that would be the best ever when you conduct your G-baby's wedding. How cool is that?

Rod, re: #3: Sounds like you're tired of sleeping on the couch after that "hangover" subject the other day. ha!

Thank you to everyone who make this blog such a fun place to hang out. I'm glad I get to meet some of you IRL thanks to the Triad. Who doesn't like to make friends?

  16. konaish:

    Reality checks:
Sent my daughter off to college in Portland this fall (David In Oregon - keep an eye on her, okay? ;-)
Looking ahead to my 25 yr. anniversary at work in a few months. I remember when I was the 'baby.' Now all of the doctors are so young!
When my mother listens to KUMU, they're playing songs from the 70s! :-?

I'm thankful for family, friends, health, a good job & for Rodney for writing a blog that we can all relate to. It brings all of us - near & far - together.

  17. hemajang:

I commented on BL's blog that wife and I had celebrated our 36th wedding anniversary earlier in the month and he responded that he wasn't even born when we got married...MLC reality check! Actually, compared to some of my classmates, we started relatively late. I'm pretty sure some of them are great grand parents already. Next year, our 45th class reunion will be in vegas.

  18. 9th Island Girl:

MLC reality check: being on Facebook and seeing all my high school friends' pictures with THEIR daughters, who look exactly like my friends used to look in high school! That was a wake-up call!

There are so many things I'm grateful for: my husband, my daughter, good health, my family and friends, living in the U.S., the men and women in the military keeping this country safe...the list is endless.

  19. sally:

9th Island Girl: I like that. When your list is endless, you are truly blessed!

I am also thankful that I am employed and (more amazed than anything else) that I can support myself on my own paycheck.

Which reminds me, we work til 6pm tonight. ay yai yai

  20. sally:

9th Island Girl: not only do the sons and daughters look like our friends, do you notice they have the same mannerisms? Too funny!

Have a great day everyone! Long work day ahead.

  21. KAN:

I too am thankful for the new friends I've made via MLC. Thank you, Rodney, for creating an inviting, friendly place to hang out and share. And thank you, Paula, for letting him.

Two MLC reality checks: first one happened in my late 30's when the younger women in Sweetie's halau first started calling me "Aunty." The first time one of them called me that made me stop dead in my tracks. Then I realized I was at Aunty (they say "NT") age. Whoa. Second one happened last month: we found out Sweetie's going to be a grandpa. His daughter (from prior marriage) is expecting in late May next year. Whoa.

  22. Ocean Lover:

Ynaku........conducted his daughter's wedding and wants to do his granddaughter's wedding???????

Is he a "reverend"? HOLY CRAP!

Oh......can I talk like dat to a "reverend"?

MLC reality check.........there's more than meets the eye when you meet an MLC'er. ;-)

My MLC reality check is a daily one.... "Dad....you OLD!" coming from Da Teenager's mouth. :-(

    OL

  23. Ocean Lover:

I got one! When the first time you hear someone call you "Mister .............."

    THAT made me go "Huh?"

    OL

  24. Rod's Big Bro:

I'm so thankful for all the people at MLC, O&E, WWD who have become great friends and helped me through many rough times.

#1 MLC reality check - My Grandson will be graduating from High School this year, were did all the time go.

#2 MLC reality check - I am now teaching tennis to grand children of my former students and also have 3 generations of families taking lessons.

@ Sally - though you have so many things in common with my ex (spooky) :) , and yet you are the exact opposite in having fun and enjoying life.

@ OL - I had the same reaction "Mister.......", especially where I am a frequent shopper. I now tell them "please just call me Bruce". I really don't feel like a "Mister".

@ Rod - I noticed that all my 3 younger brothers all had white/gray hair a lot earlier than me, WWD.

  25. Superman808:

BTW, I'm a baby MLC-er. I got 3 kids; 26;20;16...no g-kids yet...but when that happens, I can see my hair molting gray. Auwe!

The only thing that I would be conducting at any of their weddings is the Beer line :P

  26. Ynaku:

Hey OL, been there said that. No worries :P Bless you my son

  27. M:

    Good morning Rodney and MLC'ers!

I'm thankful for my savior Jesus Christ, masako, my kids and my family.

Also thankful for this blog, O&E, WWD and the others. I made so much new freinds because of it.

  28. Uncle Rod's Niece:

    Hi Uncle Rod,

What a nice subject that you picked for today...

#1: I am thankful for all the family and friends that I have and all my kids (even when i want to sell them to strangers because they are driving me nuts!)
#2: I am thankful for my uncle who i have wonderful memories to have this blog so i can read it and laugh thru my day and realize how funny "old" people are! (just kidding) but most of all to be able to have "re-connected" with him...
#3: I am thankful for having a job (even though the pay is lousy, when the housing market picks back up it will be much better)
#4: I am thankful for life...as hard as its been and the road doesn't always appear to be smooth...I am thankful to wake up everyday to live one more day at a time...

  29. opso:

whoa! you and AP sure had a fun filled/packed weekend! i guess she forgave you awready. heh

i'm thankful for all the new friends i have met here on MLC and also WWD?! & O&E. everyone is great!

Largo - thanks for giving us all a venue where we can all reminisce bout the good old days and bring back them "feel good" memories.
and to all the posters who have jogged my memory a whole lotta times. man! some of you peeps have mean "photogenic" ;) memories!

  30. Mike in Waipio:

    (1) First of all, I'm thankful for living in Hawaii in the greatest country in the world; and thankful for all the men and women, past and present, who preserve our freedom and allow us our way of life. (2) Next, I'm thankful for all my great family members on both sides of my family: my wife's side (my IN-LAWS) and my side (would they be the OUT-LAWS?); so many awesome people. (3) I'm especially thankful for my wife, Jill, who does so much for me. Since my surgery in 2003, I've been "partially" disabled (some would just say disabled, but I say "partially" because I'm able to do a lot of the things I did before, only more slowly). I do what I can around the house, but Jill does almost all the chores, handles our finances, and drives me everywhere. Not only is she my primary caregiver, she also helps my brother Ed and wife Joy in caring for Mom.
Comment on landmarks @Sally, Rodney, NaPueo: Over the years, I've also used landmarks that no longer exist and I've noticed that I've used different types of landmarks for different groups of friends. For some, it's close to this movie theater or across from that movie theater; for others, it's next to this bar or just past that bar; for still others, it's near this bowling alley or a block past that bowling alley; or, it's next to this service station or across the street from that service station.

  31. opso:

k........my first "reality check" i had was about 18 or so years ago when we used to have these snot-nosed college student summer hires here at work.

one day during lunch.....we were all talking bout old movies and Bullitt with Steve McQueen came up. then this dang keed pipe up and says......

    "who's Steve McQueen?"

i was like....."you're kidding right?" and he was serious! :x

and like konaish was......i "used" to be the baby here at work. *sigh*

  32. che:

I'm thankful that my friends and family are fine and that I still have a job.

MLC reality check, I last Cherry Blossom pageant I went to was for a friend's daughter and not someone I knew.

  33. Rodney Lee:

@opso - same thing happened to me. One of the young sales girls at work asked "Who's the Rolling Stones?". Ai-ya.

  34. KAN:

@Opso & Rodney: had one messenger in our office who didn't know who Mary Tyler Moore was. Aigoo.

  35. Superman808:

Ok...I found a Cherry Blossom picture for you folks. Back in 1978, Lois was a contestant.
    http://www.ctrlaltdel-usa.net/superman/forum/yabb/attachments/091123_1978_Cherry_Blossom_Lois.jpg

    Enjoy...I do! :-)

  36. Ynaku:

    Eh Superman???? Score :P

I remember those HUGE leis. Used to buy those Red Carnation Leis for special occasions. I gave several to my future wife. Made points. Must have worked cause we been together 27 yrs

  37. Creative:

I am thankful that I have a job, my health, and my family is doing okay. :D

  38. Rod's Big Bro:

I was hoping Rod would post this, but since this fits with todays topic:

    Hope this makes your day

If you are 30 or older you will think this is hilarious!!!!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking Twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill... barefoot... BOTH ways Yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today.

You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!

And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalogue!!

There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a pen!

Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take, like, a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents!

Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our ass! Nowhere was safe!

There were no MP3' s or Napsters! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself!

Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished and the tape would come undone. Cause - that's how we rolled, dig?

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it!

And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either!
When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids'. Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen... forever!
And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel! NO REMOTES!!!

There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-bastards!

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove! Imagine that!

That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980 or before!

    Regards,
    The Over 30 Crowd

  39. Superman808:

    @Ynaku,

Score? Yeah...depends on the time of day. When it is the time of month, I usually have to forfeit. ;-)

In regards to the leis...geez, to think of it, I don't ever recall seeing lei makers string the bombucha guys.

  40. Rod's Big Bro:

Again I'm thankful for all my daughters whom have given me 5 grandsons and 2 granddaughters. And all the MLCr's out there who I can call "friends".

Happy Thanksgiving to all and an even Merrier Holiday Season.

  41. bamboohouse808:

I'm thankful that I'm not MLC age yet. LOL!! Kidding!!

    I getting there........

I hate when sales people call me "sir". I know they are trying to be polite, but come on!!

  42. Rodney Lee:

@Creative - Thanks for posting to MLC and welcome! It was great to meet you IRL on Friday. Wish I got to talk to you some. Next time.

  43. Rodney Lee:

@Superman808 - Wow, Lois was a Cherry Blossom contestant? No wonder. Paula said she's so sweet. I'm going to dig up my old Cherry Blossom books. Let's see if I have '78.

You know Supes, you don't look old enough to have a 26 year old, or even a 20 year old. 16, I might believe you. LOL

  44. Rodney Lee:

@Mike in Waipio - you're very fortunate to have such a supportive and nurturing wife. And it's great that you appreciate Jill and not just take her for granted. And not just for what she does for you, but for other family members too.

  45. Bre:

My MLC reality check came 5 months ago when my nephew's son was born. That made me feel old but I am thankful for the baby. Now they are moving to Missouri so I am very sad but trying to be happy for them.

  46. Braddah Lance:

So wat? MLC'ers "bump & grind" still yet? Or is dat da MLC version of safe sex?
*** check out da first pic....... and da couple in between Uncle Rodney and Aunty Paula***

And you and Aunty Paula.... wat? Still dancing with da "Holy Ghost" in between?

I'm thankful for.......... everything and anything. If you can laugh and smile, dat's worth more than world itself.

And how's dat.... we on da same wave length or wat? I nevah know you wen blog about dis already. Ai-goo

Or does dat mean I'm MLC?

  47. Superman808:

    @Rod,

I started young...and I didn't know what I was doing...or maybe I did, and was blinded by the amount of testorone. 8-)

  48. Shawn:

Eh, you attended my cousin's kid's wedding. CJ's dad and I are first cousins. Small world, yeah?

  49. Rodney Lee:

@Shawn - at the wedding, they mentioned how big his family is. Now I believe it. LOL.

  50. 72view:

    Hey Rod,

glad you could make it out to "The Beat". Sorry did not get a chance to meet you, but if you are ever out at one of the SoulZ gig please come on up let us know you are there. Thanks for keeping all those great memories alive.

    Aloha

  51. Seattle Gail:

Hi Rod! Great topic, as usual...you never seem to run out of ideas! A reality check is when they stop checking your ID...ok, ok that was some years ago!! But, I going be real mad if they ask if I need a senior discount. Hasn't happened yet, so I may be safe a couple more years.

I'm thankful for my 2 terrific kids...they came through teenage years drug-free, respectful, and they still give hugs. Small time, they also neva scream on airplanes or kick the seat either. Ha, ha!!

I'm thankful that that Harv celebrated his birthday yesterday...he almost didn't have another birthday. The world would have been missing one of the sweetest guys! And a fabulous guitar player and singer!!

@Sally I'm thankful for my Super Freak sistas...they are the best!!!!

Lastly, I'm thankful for my best bud, RS for his complete trust and unwavering friendship. He is a jewel.

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

  52. sally:

Pau work finally and now I can play! Had plenny to catch up and read.

Supes, I was gonna mention that MsMiz was a contestant. Unbelievable, she gets better with age! ...and she does give the worlds best huggs!

@opso: k k k-den, we call it even? ha! When were you videoing? Stealth video, I thought you said you couldn't figure it out? SneeKee!

@72view: You're more MLC than you know. You DID meet Rod... I introduced you two at the last NCR. Forgottemashita already? oy.

  53. sally:

Seattle Gail! I am grateful for a friendship that started less than a year ago and turned into one of the most joyful relationships ever! See what Harv started? Cuz we're Supah Freakeh Yaw!!!

  54. Rodney Lee:

@72view - I KNEW Soulz had a main website. I updated the link. Thanks for the nice comment.

By the time we got to The Beat, you folks were done playing. I want to catch you folks someday soon. Jules was sitting at our table and I wanted to introduce Paula and myself, but by the time there was a break in the music, Jules had left. Next time.

As for Sally introducing us at the 70's NCR, I forgottemashita too

  55. Rodney Lee:

@Seattle Gail - Happy Birthday, Harv! Thanks for you post. I'm so glad I got to meet you folks. You guys know how to have fun! Maybe one of these days - with Harv's blessing - you can do a guest entry to share the miraculous story.

  56. Rodney Lee:

@KAN - thanks for your nice entry too. I'm glad you've become a regular poster here at MLC. We love our music.

Your MCL Reality Check story reminds me of when daughter #2 graduated, after the ceremony during the lei giving and stuff, my daughter's friend came up to me and said "Uncle, where's daughter #2?"

She called me uncle! My heart melted - in a good way. I'll never forget that moment.

  57. anklebiters:

Hey Rodney, thanks for the omiyage :!: I'll BEE back in May next year for another get together.

I'm thankful for meeting all of you nice people from the Triads....makes my vacation here a really fun one keeping in touch during the year.

Reality check - seeing many of my son's former inline hockey team mates attending ASU. We all use to hang out together from August till June attending practices and out-of-state tournaments from age 10 to 17. And now they are playing for ASU :!:

I just read that Kapolei will be opening up a two rink building early next year for inline hockey. That's terrific :!: That sure beats playing on concrete outdoors and out of the periodic rain fall that Hawaii has. Water and wheels do not mix. Maybee they can use a volunteer coach/helper when I retire :?: Heaven knows I've spent many an hour at hockey rinks

  58. Neo76:

Don't forget to wish C0hiba a happy birthday too! Won't say how old he is.

  59. Rodney Lee:

    C0hiba's birthday?!? Happy Birthday C0hiba!

  60. NaPueo:

    Happy Birthday C0hiba!

  61. Superman808:

    @Sally

    Unbelievably, she is "shy"...go figure.

  62. sally:

    Good Morning !!!

    It is/was C0hiba's birthday? Happy Birthday C0hiba! Hope it's a great one!

@Supes: I know she is. But do you know our Thelma and Louise stories? The simplest outting was always an adventure for us. And her infectious laugh... I love it!

    To Topic: Rod...
When Elton John came here a few years ago a young patient mentioned it to me and I told him "I went to every single EJ concert when I was in high school". The young whippersnapper said "whoa, he's been around that long?"

    oy

I didn't dare tell him I went to every single Young Rascals concert as well.

  63. KAN:

Happy Belated Birthday C0hiba! Rock on!

    Forgottemashita already!

I LOVE that Sally! Plus the "oy" afterward! Reminds me of my friend's gramma who used to say "you kaukau-shita? You come-go-shita?"

  64. M:

Good morning Rodney and MLCers! :)

    Happy Birthday C0hiba!

  65. sally:

KAN: When my daughter was about 7 yrs old she said something then went "oy". She said "I talk like you!"

Is that a good thing? dunno.

Rod: hahaha I just got reprimand from next door for mentioning this...

  67. jaydee:

    Happy Birthday COhiba!

I am thankful for this blog even if I used to think I'd never be an MLC person. lol

And I'm also thankful for the job I have....I love it! When I look at the high unemployment numbers and see the long lines at the Unemployment Office I thank God for my job. I've been in that unemployment line before and it's not a good place to be. So sad for those who are....

  68. Ynaku:

  71. Superman808:

@Sally - I can't imagine her being Thelma OR Louise. Most of the time I may be riding as a passenger, but I'm always the one driving. Know what I mean?

@C0hiba...I don't know you (or maybe I do)....but Happy Birthday!

  72. snow:

happy birthday cOhiba! how OLD are you now? ;) hee hee...

my MLC reality check is whenever i see my friend's kids. i don't see them too often so i can't believe how grown up they are when i see them again! if the kids are in high school... does that mean we're... NO WAY! hee hee... yes, i'm in denial that i'm old!

i remember when i was in high school, thinking that 25 was old... then in college, 30 was old... then after college 40 was old! now, you're only old when you're dead! lol... but, i really do think that "we" are not as old as our parents seemed at the same age. is it because we are more immature or because our culture has changed? maybe a little of both?!

there's so much i'm thankful for... good friends (including the triad gang!) and great family, a good job, good health, and living in beautiful hawaii. thanks rodney for writing a great blog that's always entertaining and fun... and for being such a good sport (you japanese tourist, you! ;) ) and for having such a sweet wife, aunty paula! we appreciate all that you do! :)

  73. Russ Shiroma:

Hi, Everyone! I have so much to be thankful for. My biggest kick is that my circle of friends keeps on growing over the years. I am thankful for being 58 years old and can still rock 'n roll! Thanks, Rod, for this fantastic forum! Keeping hearts and souls together while sharing our passions. Sally, you go girl! Seattle Gail, what can I say...you're the bomb! Another year, another turkey!

Happy Turkey Day to 'ya all!
    Russo
    the Beatboys

Oh yeah, come join The BeatBoys for a pre-Turkey Day party at Lily Koi Rest & Lounge...Wed 11/25!

  74. Seattle Gail:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!! C0HIBA you old fart

NKHEA.... gatta go back work now :(

  76. C0hiba:

Thank you all for the Birthday wishes. Really appreciate them. I apologize for acknowleding you so late, did not read the blog this morning until way into the work day.

Was feeling kinda run down last night so went home early from work.
Wife wasn't home yet so poured a shot of Balvenie 12 year old, kicked back and watched Two and a Half Men.
Lots to be said about the relaxing effect of a glass (or 2) of alcohol.

I too am thankful for many many things. But as it applies here, I am thankful to Rodney for putting together and maintaining this blog as a way for us MCLer's to reminisce and share common thoughts, laughs, and interests.

Sorry can't meet up with you all at KGrille on Saturday. I'm planning on flying back to Waimea that morning. Missed meeting Ankles again.

  77. Rodney Lee:

@snow - yeah, why is it that we don't think we're as old as our parents seemed at the same age? Denial? Or because we're told that 40 50 is the new 30? Or is it 40? LOL

@Russ Shiroma - Thanks for the kind words. I'm starting to enjoy these years as our kids are getting older and we have time once again to get back and get part of our lives back - especially though music. I've made a lot of good friends since I've started MLC. Who knew that I'd be writing a blog some day? And who knew that the rewards would be so great!
I have to make it a point to catch the BeatBoys some day soon.

@C0hiba - Thanks. Hope you had a nice birthday and many, many more to come. Now, go buy your last ever Christmas tree.

  78. sally:

    Rod: Russ Shiroma = Calientes.

    ''memba them?

I used to go with my cousin and her friends to dances at UH... I was in the 9th grade.

Russ gonna slap me the next time he sees me. LOL

  79. Rodney Lee:

Calientes - little bit before my time, but the name I do recognize. I remember this guy talking to Candy Au and saying it would be something to get the Calientes to get back together to play at a 70's NCR dance.

Speaking of "memba" - start thinking of memories for tomorrow's MLC entry.

  80. Rodney Lee:

What time you want the post to appear?

  81. sally:

@Rod: That was Russ. You met him the same night I introduced you to Seattle Gail and 72view.

Your remembery is going a little south here.

Are you taking a club vote for the time of your next post?
I vote for anytime tonight. Everyone gonna start getting BZ tomorrow, prepping for the Big Feast on Thursday.

  82. Rodney Lee:

    Okay, new post is up!

  83. anklebiters:

Another MLC reality check.......I can't golf as well as I did when I was O&E or WWD age :!: One of life's cruel joke.... :-(

  84. Seattle Gail:

    @Sally...Calientes were the bomb!
@Russ...Waiting to hear my favorites..sing loud so I can hear you.

  85. C0hiba:

My cousin was in the Calientes. We used to watch them practice in his garage. He lives in AZ now.

  86. Seattle Gail:

@COhiba Who was your cousin? Russ was the band leader and his dad the manager. I used to run around with them in college.
