Black Friday Preview

November 20th, 2009 by Rodney Lee

Black Friday - the day after Thanksgiving which marks the start of the Christmas shopping season.  Crazy deals and even crazier shoppers will be out that day - some in line as early as before midnight to be the first in at the doorbuster sales.

If you want to be one of those (not me!), here's some upcoming sales ads that might help you plan your day.

And for more mainland stores:

And if you're an Apple Computers fan, Black Friday is the one and only day that Apple stores have a sale.  The rumored sales at Apple are:

  • Up to 30% off all iPods (except iPhone and Shuffle)
  • Up to 25% off all Macs
  • Up to 15% off all accessories, Apple software, and Apple hardware

But your best bet is to make sure you pick up a Honolulu Advertiser on Thanksgiving day and scope out all the ads.

The Thanksgiving edition of the Honolulu Advertiser is the thickest newspaper of the year packed with ads.  It always brought me joy to receive the Thanksgiving edition.  Maybe because it marked the start of the Christmas season, or it meant that a tasty turkey meal was about to be consumed, or probably just the holiday spirit.  An MLC memory that still lives on.

Mahalo to C0hiba for asking me to list the Black Friday ads.

Even if you're not planning on fighting the crowds, it's a excellent way to get great gift ideas.

So, where do you stand on your Christmas shopping?  Are you brave enough to venture out on Black Friday?  If you do pop into Ala Moana Center, I'll be in Apple store.

Don't forget - Triad blogger party tonight at Fort Street Bar & Grill.  6:00 pm until whenever.  Come on down and meet Anklebiters IRL - as he's home for his annual visit.

    Bah, humbug!

  2. Ynaku:

FIRST of all, I won't be shopping on Black Friday. Crazy, plus I'll be over on Oahu.

Went to Walmart and picked up a Sandisk 8GB jump drive for $21 and now going be $14. I still got a deal cause I no need fight the crowd.

  3. Ynaku:

dang second time I took too long to type.

Good Morning hanapaa, Yeah, Bah Humbug

  4. sally:

    Good Morning~!

I don't do the Black Friday thing... period.

Every year at Thanksgiving dinner my SIL and I look at the ads and say "yah, let's go" then we wake up the next morning and call each other "I don't wanna". LOL

One year in a land far far away I woke up one Black Friday and thought, hmmm, maybe I'll go with "K" (my BFF goes every...single...year). I called her. It was 9am. She was already home. Done. Pau shopping.

My BFF is a shopping pro.

I was possessed that morning. To much tri-whatever-that-turkey-poison is called.

  5. NaPueo:

Have to work on Black Friday. Can't go shopping till that evening. :(

  6. sally:

The NIGHT after Thanksgiving is the start of the Big Blaisdell Craft Fair. Okay, THAT I go to. I don't really shop, I go to get ideas.

...and get my pasteles and gandule rice.

  7. M:

Good morning Rodney and MLC'ers! :)

masako and I always do the Black Friday but not this year. Gotta save money because of furloughs. I have to work anyways.

@sally, we always get the pasteles and gandule rice too!

I hope to see most of you tonight at the pah-tay! :)

  8. 9th Island Girl:

NEVER Black Friday for me! Hate the crowds!

  9. Rod's Big Bro:

Won't go stand in line, but will go to the Craft Fair, do about 80% of my shopping there. Only the parking is bummers, but once in so many things to get and it's much more original than the box store stuff.

Have a friend doing the Craft Fair this year for the first time, I really don't know the name of her booth, but hope they do great, and will probably run into many MLCr's there.

  10. KAN:

I don't shop on Black Fridays. As I get older, I get more like my dad - I hate crowds. Maybe it's that I'm getting (already there?) to be an old fut, but I think it's also that crowds are getting ruder. C0hiba - you're brave. I envy you Honolulu peeps who get to go to the awesome craft fairs.

The good thing about Black Fridays in Seattle is it's when the big public light displays start. They have a ceremony at Westlake Center to light the big holiday tree and the Macy's (used to be Bon Marche) star. And at Seattle Center, they light the "tree" on top the Space Needle and the transmission towers on Queen Anne. Already get construction cranes working on the new Gates Foundation near Seattle Center that have holiday lights.

The holidays stress me out, but I love two things most about December: holiday lights and singing Christmas carols. Oh, and all that eating. . .

  11. KAN:

    I was possessed that morning.

oooh, Sally, you make it too easy sometimes! (j/k) Just don't get re-possessed!

  12. Kage:

    Good Morning All!

I don't do the black friday thing ever. Not even a itch of a chance.

I worked retail for too many years and absolutely avoid black fridays.

@sally - "To much tri-whatever-that-turkey-poison is called." HAHAhahahah. I like that. Mind if I borrow it this Thanksgiving? hehe

  13. David In Oregon:

sally: the turkey poison you talking about is called "tri-come-back-later-i-goin-sleep"

  14. visitor:

I don't even consider black friday shopping. I think for many it's just become a weird ritual that they later try to brag about. They do it and later say how horrible it was (long lines, parking, rude people, etc). I really don't care how early you were up standing in line...it's kinda like "lemming" behavior.

  15. BananaFysh:

I've been going shopping on Black Friday the past few years.

I guess the stores I go to aren't NEARLY as crazy as they could be. I dunno if the deals aren't as good, not enough "concentration" of deals, or just things that people don't want.

II don't like waiting in the super long lines and the obnoxious crowds, so I tend to go for the "path of least resistance" in my shopping adventures. I guess I'm a "shopping ninja." ;)

  16. David In Oregon:

BF: I think they see your teeths and dem folks get out of your way. They think you got some funky stuff that might be contagious, and they don't want it. ;-)

  17. sally:

    Happy Pau Hana everybody!

@KAN re #11: I usually walk right into it without even knowing. ~sigh~

@kage and DIO: that's another example. ha!

  18. HNL2LAS:

Hehehe.. I don't like the crowds, but it is kinda exciting to be getting a darn good deal if you can get it. Sometimes it is fun talking to people in line with you! bahhaha... Plus the outlet malls open at midnight.. so it's not like you have to get up early... uhhh just stay up through the early morn for the 4, 5 and 6am sales! I'm thinking I won't be doing it this year though.. noooo moola.... sigh... guess I just might have to sleep in that morning!

  19. neo76:

Never went shopping on Black Friday. I don't get it.

Tryptophan in turkey is what makes you sleepy. But if you google it, it's actually eating too much turkey (and alcohol) that makes you sleepy. Chicken, beef and pork have about the same amount of trypotophan as turkey.

  20. Rodney Lee:

Sorry for being MIA - had Friday off.
