King Pins Halloween Dance

November 2nd, 2009 by Rodney Lee

Well the planets seemed to have aligned this past Saturday night with Halloween falling on a Saturday, a full moon, and the King Pins playing at Hawaiian Brian's.

Paula and I decided to avoid Waikiki this year and spend the evening listening to the King Pins playing oldies music with songs from bands such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Rolling Stones, AWB, Stray Cats, Jefferson Airplane and more.

Plus, if you dressed up in a costume, the first round was on the house!  We weren't planning to dress up, but...  he, he.

First of all, Paula got into the spirit by carving a jabon.  That's right, not a pumpkin, but a jabon.

Jabon o lantern
Boo!

After spending the day holding a garage sale, we got ready for our night out.

Japanese Tourist
Japanese tourists!  Paula even had the flower on the slipper.

Fishhead and his wife were also there as they shared their table with us.

Fishheads
Uncle Fester and Morticia - with glowing lightbulb!

And Sally and "Lois" greeted everyone at the door.

Sally & Lois
How cute, yeah?

Lots of people in costume, including a bonsan!

Bonsan
That was classic!

And even the King Pins were in costume.

King Pins
Check out Harvey in his tutu costume.  And crown.

The dance floor was crowded all night.

Dancers
Check out them heels on Mrs. Claus!

And in between dancing, some even enjoyed a game or two of pool.  Who knew Uncle Fester shoots pool.

Fishhead shooting pool
Morticia ended up kicking Uncle Fester's butt

It was a fun night with good food and excellent music.  Special mahalo to Superman808 for putting together yet another successful and safe event.  It was the place for MLCers to be!

Irwin Santos
Mahalo Irwin "Superman808" Santos!

After the King Pins were done, there was free karaoke.  But we decided to call it a night as we were pretty tired from waking up early for the garage sale.

On the way home, we came upon a police roadblock.  I said to Paula "Pull me over!" - and guess what?  They did.  Paula said "Well, you got your wish".  The cop must've been wondering what is with these Japanese tourists!  But we told him it was just our costumes and we went on our merry way.  Too bad I can't speak Japanese.  LOL

So, how did you spend your Saturday Halloween night?  What do you normally do on Halloween night?  Pass out candies?  Take the kids around?  Hide out in the back of the house?  Go out and eat a slow, leisurely dinner?  Have any Halloween night stories to share?  Maybe from your past Halloweens?

I'm telling you, if you MLCers haven't been to one of these retro music dances, you're missing out!  Even if you don't dance, just to listen to the music is a blast (from the past).

Here's a couple more chances to join in on the fun.

  1. NaPueo:

Cool pics. Wow Classic Pan Am bag.

  2. David In Oregon:

NaPueo, how funny. I was gonna say the same thing. That Pan Am bag is collectible !!

That tutu costume...that takes some guts!!

  3. anklebiters:

Hey Rodney, I had the Pan Am bag during 8th-9th grade. Yours looks in perfect condition :!: You forgot the camera around your neck

  4. sally:

Paparazzi! Yes Rod and Paula, it was a Great Big Fun night! Your costumes were perfect for you since you always have your camera around your neck.

I know there are pics that you cannot post (or risk getting fired) but my friends never disappoint in the costume dept. Mr French Maid and Victor/Victoria are always original (they started the afro/Angel Flights trend at the Nightclub Reunions). Mr Bonsan too, he has been things that are so politically incorrect!

Supes worked so hard in the background, I'm glad I was there when he told Harvey "here's the open gig dates" and I saw Oct 31. My eyes went wide open and I said "we'll take this one!" LOL Supes makes it look so effortless, "Lois" and I just followed instructions that night.

Hope you all had as fun a night as we did!

  5. Ynaku:

You guys was hilarious. Who didn't have a Pan Am bag in the 60's-70's. That was the bag to kill for

  6. volleymom2:

I usually pass out candy to the kiddies in the neighborhood, but this year decided to venture out to Waikiki with my daughter and her bf. We had dinner and took in the sights of Waikiki, very interesting with all sorts of weird do people, I guess I was one of them lol!! It was a beautiful night under the full moon!

  7. sally:

I so wish Paula would have sung at least one song afterwards. I have yet to witness the legend. After breaking down and packing up, I came back in for just one song... couldn't resist. Then it was off to Zippys for Jello Parfait to top off the night with Seattle Gail and friends.

SG goes back to reality soon, I'm sad but so grateful for times I spend with her. I can't help thinking if we were classmates in high school, we could have gotten into so much trouble together and pulled Ms Jawa along for the ride!

  8. sally:

BTW Rod and Paula... love that Jabon!

  9. hanapaa:

@Rod: I get pocket protector and pens you coulda borrowed. Wea da glasses?

  10. M:

    Good morning Rodney!

Look like that was a fun night!

Masako and I went to Kahala Mall and it was packed! It had a line to get candy from the stores that snaked around inside the whole Mall. You couldn't tell where the line started and where it ended.

We saw BH, Mrs. BH and son in line.

  11. sally:

Good that there are safe places to take the keiki. I see Masako took hers LOL... j/k M.

My nephew's preschool had an event on site that night, complete w/ rock climbing wall, jumpy house, etc.

  12. sally:

Oh, BTW, Seattle Gail and her friend Ms Jawa are to be credited with conjuring up Harvey's ballerina costume. They are so creative and the way they put it together to look like a real outfit was very inventive!

  13. che:

Rodney, nice costumes. The Pan Am bag looks new. You must have been saving that one.

  14. sally:

Back to reality, off to work now. At least it's air conditioned! Have a wonderful day everyone!

  15. NKHEA:

    Morning everybody :)

Wow UR, looks like waz a fun night :P

We usually set up a grave yard in our front yard 8O  and have small kine party in the garage to past out candies ;) :) only thing now days no mo to much kids :(

    NKHEA.....off 2 work

  16. Rod's Big Bro:

WWD the kids no show now days, rushed to buy candy and stuff so Mom could BEE prepared, then my brother took her to the mall, WTH. So I locked up and went to da mall myself, it's good to see all the kids and parents in a safe enviro, but it's so sanatized.

Oh, well, like da bag Rod, but u need the glasses with da big black frames and BF's teeth. I think next year I'll be Captain Kamikze, the only pilot to fly 3 missions (???). Sorry I missed the pahtee, looked like fun, but Sally must have had hard time moving around all poofy with her costume.

  17. snow:

thanks for sharing your pictures of what looked like a fun halloween night! but, rodney, where's your costume??? (c'mon... you KNEW it was coming, right? ;) hee hee... i didn't want to disappoint you!) paula looks cute, though! and nice costumes by fishhead and sally!

spent my halloween night tagging along with the kids, trick-or-treating! went cruising around in waikiki afterwards... volleymom2, wow, i give you credit for walking around in that craziness!! we saw quite a few nearly nekkid people along with some other weirdness!

  18. Superman808:

    Rod & Paula,

Thank you for joining us on Halloween!! It was a blast, and I'm still recovering from my weekend. The Hawaiian Superman was all over town saving the day! I heard the Daily Planet was looking for more pics of Supes. :-)

BTW, I like your Jabong. We carved 3 pumpkins for Saturday last week Sunday, but the buggas neva last a few days before falling apart. Bummer.

Kudos to Sally (a.k.a. "Trixie"), she helped me alot by rounding up her line dancing crew and taking care of the front door along with my Lois.

Anyway, my photobug friend Eileen Lee and I have taken about 500 pics of the gang...great pics...plus some of the inappropriate kine too...if you think that your readers may want to view the shenanigans, I'll post the link, just let me know

  19. opso:

wow! looks like a fun nite! :D

Largo - what?.....you also had on da bermuda shorts with black dress sh0es and dress socks? oh yeah.....and the sore looking kine sunburn.

AP - you look good as japanee tourist! and good job on da jabon-o-lantern. :D

spent Halloween nite bar hopping and ended up at Restaurant Row. was crayzeee fun! i still stay recovering. :?

shoulda made a stop at HB's and held the place up. i was in a mafioso get-up.....and giving away free loot like untraceable cell phones, illegal transaction records, energy packs, etc..... ;)

  20. Rodney Lee:

Thanks Sally. I forgot to mention that Seattle Gail was there too, right at the next table. SG and Jawa put together Harvey's costume? Classic. Hospital gown style! LOL Who did his make up?

Paula and I should've taken a full length picture. You would've seen my Pentax film camera hanging around my neck, Paula's slippers with the flower on top and her match white Pan Am travel bag.

That's why hard - didn't have JAL travel bags.

If I could've found a square Pan Am bag, would've gone as a nerd. Need to find the braces teet.

  21. Rodney Lee:

@Superman808 - yes! Please post the link. I wanted to catch a picture of Aileen since photographers are always on the other side of the camera and never get noticed for their hard work.

  22. Rodney Lee:

Should've come down, opso. They have New Castle bottles.
I had on white shorts and tatami slippers. Even made side comb. LOL

I heard Restaurant Row was charging for parking that night - which they normally don't do.

  23. Rodney Lee:

All night I was thinking "Snow is going to have fun with this costume on me".

  24. opso:

Largo - ho.....must've been hard for you to mess with your "do" and change it to nerdy kine eh? haha!

we were cabbing it around town so don't know about the parking sitch at RR.

  25. M:

Rodney, you and AP should have worn matching outfits. :)

  26. Rodney Lee:

opso - plenty of "glue" in the hair and no problem shaping the hairdo.

M - Savers didn't have matching muumuu and shirt. I was looking for the kine match shirt and shorts.
I told Paula that when she walks, she needs to walk knock-kneed. LOL

RBB - I heard that Captain Kamikaze - the only one to fly 3 missions - had a nickname: "Chicken".

  27. Superman808:

  30. Ynaku:

Great pics. I dunno if I would have dressed like "Dat guy" Bwahahahaha. He wish!

  31. Uncle Rod's Niece:

Hey uncle Rod,since we got the kids we always do the same traditional halloween stuff. friday nite we carved pumpkins, saturday daytime after chores we played games and then we did the trick or treat thing.the in-laws stayed home to pass out goodie bags dressed up as a witch and an old man. Did I happen to mention they passed out 300+ goodie bags?! for some reason Maui Lani is just hoppin with kids to where you can't even drive down the street. And we know that most of these people aint from our neighborhood! But, Its all good because we know that its all safe for the kids. However, this year we had MPD cruise thru Maui Lani (a first) because someone called that there was an escaped prisoner was in the area...Thank you my better half. No, not for calling it in. for being the escaped prisoner! That was his costume!! Handcuffs, bright orange jumpsuit and to make it better, the Hannibal mask. i'll put our pictures up later on FB for you to see...btw...loved the Pan Am bag! but where's your camera?! U suppose to walk around asking "you takey pitcha?!" LOL!

  32. Rodney Lee:

Here ya go - this picture that Eileen took shows my camera.
    http://www.ctrlaltdel-usa.net/private/091031_Kingpins_HB_Lounge_EL/content/IMG_0109_large.html

This picture was taken after I won a door prize - a set of Sony ear phones!

  33. Rosette:

a camera with big huge lens and the map hanging around your bag!

  34. Rosette:

HUGE LENS THAT GIVE YOU SORE NECK AFTER..omg

  35. KAN:

Rodney and Paula - TOO GOOD! Those Pan Am bags cracked me up. But you guys are toooo tan to be Japanee tourists!

Great job on that jabon, Paula.

Sweetie and I spent a very quiet Halloween. We get no trick-or-treaters (inside a condo) but it was perfect (and unusual) weather for Halloween - dry and warm, evening temps in the high 50s. I made lasagna and chocolate mousse for our treats.

  36. sally:

Yes Rod, Congratulations on winning the Sony Headphones. Guud stuff! Was funny cuz Supes is so tall and I had to keep reaching up to get into the lucky number jar to pull the tickets. hahaha 5'0" vs the Giant.

@RBB: my costume was drapey, not poofy so I had easy time dancing and running around and cavorting. Plenny Jazz Hands and Spirit Fingers. As usual, no time to sit down. Besides, I had to burn off all those Jacks.

@Ynaku: If you knew "that guy" and "Mrs. That Guy", it would all make perfect sense. hahaha Friday night they wore totally diff costumes to our Karaoke Party. They are da best!

If you guys knew what some of these people do for a living, you'd beware of going to the hospital, who runs some gov't systems, who sets out your property taxes, who brings in your shipped goods, and who is my atty. bhahahaha!

  37. Ukuhead:

    Nice Jabons!!!

Nice Pan Am bag too. That bugga must be worth big bucks...

  38. Rodney Lee:

You'd be surprised how many people have Pan Am bags sitting around at home.

  39. Rod's Big Bro:

@ Sally - Oh, wow laulau, sure looked poofy in the picture, like a burnt cheeto, naw naw j/k. Guess you must have done a spin thing, looks good.

@ Rod - Hey no make fun of my Captain Kamikazi, Sally bro keeps tellin everyone his relative was "Admiral Yamamoto" who was a kamikazi pilot and flew 5 missions. So my name going be Captain (Tori) Kamikazi, yes.

  40. Rod's Big Bro:

@ Rod - The guitar guy, reminds me of Cheech in the movie "Up in Smoke". Ask Sally, that's her generation.

  41. Rodney Lee:

@Rosette - if you look at the pictures from Superman808 and Eileen - you'll see something huge.

    And it's not LENS.

  42. sally:

oh Rod! This is a family show... I thought. LOL

@RBB: Never saw a single C&C movie, only remember the album. "Claaass. Claaass. WAKE UP!" The Karaoke Boo Party I went to on Fri... there were two girls who came as Cheech and Chong, they won first prize. Was very cool costumes. They even passed out joints (fake. of course. I think. I lost mine.)

And my friends know that Admrl Yamamoto was MY grandpa! hahaha Kamikazi huh? Like Snoopy & Red Baron?

    And den... a burnt cheeto?

Halloween should be changed to every last Sat of Oct instead of Oct 31st. Let's start a petition.

  43. fishhead:

rod- thanks for the pics and sharing the night listening to good music. paula and your costumes were the bomb. good accessories.

superman/eileen- thank you too for the pics, we really enjoyed the party.

sally- you're a party animal. you know how to have fun.

  44. sally:

@fishhead, kinda scary that I don't remember taking most of those pics. yikes! I going miss your sister, good thing got email, FB, and free LD on the cell. Why don't you give her a plane ticket for Christmas?

Okay gang, I took my meds, gotta get ready to fall asleep cuz it hits pretty fast
    and I

  45. Rod's Big Bro:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poJS83OZ4m4

  46. Rodney Lee:

@fishhead - thanks for sharing your table with us. After watching you and Mrs. fishhead shoot pool, I was kinda missing it.

Hmm... maybe a Triad get together at Haw'n Brian's someday?

  47. Superman808:

    @fishhead - you're welcome. I'm already planning for next year :P

@rod - let me know when you coming and I'll leave some 1/2 hour FREE pool table time cards for you. I had a stack to pass out on Halloween night and I totally forgot about it...it was another treat to hand out.

@all - if you came to the party, whoops!! I'll save the cards for the next gig this Saturday...with The Beat Boys.

  48. ducksinthewind:

ho, brave! i wouldnt dare touch that "Dr. Flash" costume with a 10-foot .... um, never mind.

  49. Rodney Lee:

Wow. Nobody found the hidden surprise yet?

  50. Ynaku:

Brah, I jumped out of my underwear when I saw dat "SURPRISE" But I still had my pants on

  51. Kage:

Was the hidden surprise the very CLOSE up of Sally?

  52. Diane Ako:

    I love the jabon!

  53. Rodney Lee:

That's it! I should've photoshopped BOO! on the picture. LOL

  54. Rodney Lee:

    Diane Ako:

    I love the jabon!

Hi Diane! Welcome to the Midlife Crisis blog.

MLCers, be sure to check out Diane Ako's Small Talk blog too.

  55. sally:

    Hello Everyone!

@Rod: huh? surprise? That was a surprise? Darn near would scare everyone off the blog. My only disappointment was that Supes didn't get a pic showing my Hot Pink Spiderweb Eyelashes. Took long time to put on, I haven't used falsees since my mid 20's.

  56. Rodney Lee:

Um, sally. Falsees - back in the day - didn't pertain to eyelashes.

Let me guess. False eyelashes were "Bes' Kine" from Longs, right? 88¢

oh, btw - to find the surprise, click on the picture of sally.

  57. Ukuhead:

oh, btw – to find the surprise, click on the picture of sally.

You posted the picture of the Jabon twice???

  58. Seattle Gail:

@ Rodney - someone told me you weren't planning on dressing up, but what a surprise when you and Paula showed up...I almost fell off my chair laughing! The Pan Am bags, camera around neck and the loud outfits were perfect!!! When you guys walked up, the first thing I did was look down to see if you had flower on the slippas...and there it was...I just cracked up!! Swan Lake Yamauchi Harv was such a good sport to put on that ballerina outfit...Sharon did the make-up and that really completed the look!! Stop by and see my best bud, Russ and The BeatBoys at HB this Saturday.

@ Superman808 - as usual a great job! The music scene owes a debt of gratitude to your tireless promotion of the different events and the gajillions of pictures...sending big love your way for all you do!!! I'll be sending photos of you and "Lois" soon.

@ Sally - miss you lots!!!!! Starting to post pictures on Facebook...then will work on video of the Super Freaks...if I can stop laughing!!!!

@ Fishhead - only you would have thought of Fester...still funny after all these years!!! Can't believe we're related!

  59. Rodney Lee:

@Seattle Gail - it was nice to meet up with you again. I know you do a lot of behind-the-scenes work so I applaud you for all your hard work. WTG!

    Keep in touch!
