MLC Friday5 - Automobiles
October 23rd, 2009 by Rodney LeeHere's the scenario - a rich uncle passed away and him, being an auto buff, left you a unique inheritance. He's building you a 5 car garage and he said to go out and get yourself 5 automobiles of your choice. The 5 automobiles will be paid in full and car insurance, maintenance, and fuel will be paid for the rest of your life.
What 5 cars would you choose?
Here's my picks:
- A luxury car - Rolls Royce Silver Seraph
- An exotic sports car - Ferrari 458 Italia
- A vintage hot rod - 1969 Camaro SS
- A pick up truck - Toyota PreRunner
- Something for Paula
- 2001 Lexus ES300 in Graphite
Just think. Walk into your 5 car enclosed garage, look at your cars and think to youself "Hmm, what do I feel like driving today".
Hey, we can always dream, right?
Don't forget, the Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry Give 2 Live big dance is coming up in less than a month - on 11/13/09.

Tickets have been printed and are being distributed. About 2/3's of the ballroom has been sold already. I have 2 seats left on the MLC table so contact me soon if you want to join us. Other Honolulu Advertiser peeps bought a table right next to us. And remember - it's for a good cause.
*If you want a sneak peek of what Power House sounds like, they'll be playing tonight (10/23) at Ige's 19th Puka. Check them out! You won't be disappointed.
Party Alert!
HNL2LAS is relocating back to Las Vegas early next month so we're having a going away party for her this Sunday (10/25) at Ryan's inWard Centre. Party starts at 4:00 but come when you can. We'll probably be there until at least 8:00. Stop on in to say hi - or bye to HNL2LAS. The Triads will be there, so join in on the fun.

An exotic sports car - Koenigsegg CCX http://www.chooseyouritem.com/exotics/files/145000/145268.html
A vintage hot rod - '69 ZL-1 Copo Camaro or '69 Yenko Camaro
A pick up truck - Ford Lightning
Something for Paula - Segway
Seriously, Aunty Paula is a Corvette ZR-1 type of gal.

What 5 cars would you choose?
Here's my picks:
1. A luxury car - Bugatti Royale
2. An exotic sports car - Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe
3. A vintage hot rod - gotta think on this one
4. A pick up truck - Chevy Silverado 2500HD
5. Something for Paula - whatever she wants, in whatever color she wants, with a driver to drive her around.
October 23rd, 2009 at 5:44 am
Good Morning!
We're also assuming I am capable of driving these things right? K, here goes
1. Luxury Car - Mercedes 500SL
2. An Exotic Sports Car - Mercedes CLK (Not into exotics. I'll take this one, thank you)
3. A Vintage Hot Rod - 32 Ford Roadster
4. A Pickup Truck - Dodge Ram Hemi
5. Something for Paula: My uncle is getting something for Paula? Okay, but she better sing me a song then.... LOL Then she can choose whatever she wants.
Heyyyy... what about my everyday, run-around, '65 Mustang? Where does she fit in? I don't want a hot roddy car, just a simple 1965 Ford Mustang. All original. Stock. Simple. Sentimental reasons.
October 23rd, 2009 at 5:59 am
sally:
My ex's dentist boss and his wife restored a '65 mustang 'vert themselves. They both took a class in auto restoration and did most of the work. I don't know if they still have it but it was a neat car.
October 23rd, 2009 at 6:25 am
Good morning Rodney!
I'm working with cars and trucks all day long, that's the last thing that I would want more cars....
October 23rd, 2009 at 6:28 am
Hey, those are Rod's categories, I'm going with my own non-categories. It was actually very difficult for me to pick only five vehicles. I say vehicles and not cars because one has to be a motorcycle even if I don't ride much these days.
Starting off with that motorcycle: Harley-Davidson Sportster Nightster in Black Ice Denim, a chameleon-y blue to black to purple depending on light.
Staying motorcycle-related, it's a known fact that I want to be Gemma from Sons of Anarchy so I want her cars: Cadillac XLR-V (hers is a regular XLR, I think, but I want the V) and Cadillac Escalade (SUV, not the truck).
Something imported: Mercedes SL550 Roadster
This was a tough one. At least one '60s musclecar is a must. Now I would love me some big block Chevy action, but the 1969 Chevy Camaro Z/28 is the best car on the planet, ever, so I would have to go with that, with the original 302ci small block engine for authenticity's sake.
@anklebiters: "A vintage hot rod - '69 ZL-1 Copo Camaro or '69 Yenko Camaro" OMG I haven't heard those names in a long time. If I were thinking dealer custom, I would have probably thought of Nickey Chevrolet as well.
October 23rd, 2009 at 6:39 am
Good Morning anklez. kewl. That was a good project.
My affection for the '65 Mustang is because my BFF had one and, when we were 17 and 18 yrs old, that car took us on many many many adventures. Oh, if that car could talk! LOL It's more sentimental than anything else since I don't know squat about cars (that be my nephew's dept). That, and I really like the look of it.
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:00 am
@kathi: If you're a Harley afficionado you need to read Growing Up Harley Davidson by Jean Davidson (grand daughter). It begins with these two guys as kids with a dream and how everything fell into place by sheer will and determination.
Time to go work now... have a wonderful day everyone!
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:02 am
What 5 cars would you choose?
First off, maintenance, fuel, and insurance. I would still want something that I could tinker with for small things, since having it maintained would mean that parts had to be available/person would have to know how to do it quickly, esp if I wanted to be riding around in it/them.
Preferably, I'd like someone to drive me around, instead of driving around in these things all the time. I like to be a passenger too!
1) Self-restored classic Mustang. Like anklebiters's comment about ex dentist boss & wife restoring their own. I'd love to learn and be able to do body work, not just Bondo.
2) Another muscle car - Cuda? GTO?
3) Knock around beach car, so that I could go and park wherever I like, without having to lock the doors or roll up the window.
4)Deuce coupe, or similar. I want a rumble seat.
5) Plymouth or other type car with unibody: chrome and fins! Hmm, a Fury?
With many of these cars, I'll also need a dedicated parking spot when I go out, since the doors swing out w-i-d-e.
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:47 am
My choices, not within the categories:
1. '69 Z-28 Camaro
2. '68 Mustang (Bullit Mustang)
3. ' 67 Pontiac GTO
4. BMW M5
5. Toyota Tacoma (for Costco runs)
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:58 am
My 5 car choices:
1. Porsche Carrera 4S - For me
2. Jaguar - Jaguar XKR Convertible - For 'da wife
3. '69 Hemi-Cuda - For show
4. Hummer H3 - For camping and off-roading
5. Harley Deuce - For cruising on the weekend to Pechanga (
)
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:58 am
@anklebiters, @David in Oregon, @Sally - you folks don't have to follow my list. Like @Kathi mentioned - that was just my list. You can come up with anything you want*
*I'm waiting for Braddah Lance to come up with:
1.) A junka-lunka -
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:12 am
I am not a car person and I would only want one car in that 5 car garage...my old junka-lunka 1990 Mustang. By the time my car and I retired, it was getting really hard to find parts for that car. When the back of the driver's seat broke, I had to replace the whole seat. They couldn't find the seat so I went out to look for one myself. I went to this huge junk yard on the Leeward side and one of the workers drove me around the place looking for a similar car with a seat that would fit. Luckily, we found one. So, I would want only this one car (restored) in this 5 car garage and I would want the rest of the stalls filled with parts for the car. I dream!
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:18 am
Hmm.. interesting
1. '60's mustang- always wanted one of those, in pink, remember back then?
2. volkswagon bug (60' model)- if I could drive a stick.. My best friend had one and we have plenty stories to share about where were went galavanting with that car!
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:35 am
Rodney: Yeah, I know, but I was jus' being funny. Gotta try score points with one of the bosses of the Triad
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:39 am
Rodney: Seriously though, the choices I listed, with the exception of Paula's one, are serious choices. The first two are definite choices. The hot rod one, well, I still have to think about that as I have several thoughts in mind. The pickup truck choice is almost definite. I'd have to check specs on trucks with Diesel engines to choose the most powerful one. I want the power to pull a trailer.
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:47 am
Rodney, ok .....
Nothing erotic, neurotic, or expensive list...
1) Family vehicle (even thou I don't need one now, but if I did) - old VW van, with flower decals on the side
2) Home Desperate/Lowest/City Mill building supply hauling truck - 70's Chevy stepside
3) Daily driver - the original Datsun 240Z
4) Going on a date car - Plymouth Duster , always liked the sound of the 340.
5) Road trip car - Cadillac Fleetwood the size of a boat.
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:51 am
No problem. I have a feeling my list might change or grow as I read the other's vehicles.
For instance, Volleymom2 mentioned a bug.
I wouldn't mind having a '67 chop-top bug.
Or an "baby window" bug.
October 23rd, 2009 at 10:01 am
kathi:
Are you single
A woman who luuurves and knows cars
I would have chosen a '67 427 435hp Corvette but there are too many of those, real and imagined, out there.
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:03 am
@sally: Thanks for the book suggestion! Most of my Harley-related books are photo collections but that one does sound interesting.
@anklebiters: I'm happily married
My knowledge of cars is actually extremely narrow - just '60s musclecars because I still hope to own one someday. My love of cars is much wider, though!
@volleymom2 mentioned not knowing how to drive a stick shift... I know among younger folks, a lot cannot drive stick shift, for sure it's not taught in driver's ed nowadays. But I would guess that among MLC age folks, most of us would know how to drive stick? Or is that a wrong assumption?
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:13 am

kathi:
I learned how to drive stick working at my first part time job, a gas station. I'd take their delivery truck home for lunch on Sat/Sun and drive along the Lilipuna Rd loop in Kaneohe.
My daughter's first car was a stick. She would take the side roads through the subdivisions to get to her work until she became proficient in shifting.
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:24 am
I remember my dad's Ford Fairlane was stick shift - on the steering column.
Pull and up was Reverse. Pull and down was 1st. Push and up was 2nd. Push and down was 3rd. That's it. 3 gears (not counting reverse).
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:28 am
Rodney:
You remember the push buttons on the dash for the Plymouth/Dodge automatic transmission
October 23rd, 2009 at 12:15 pm
@ankles - My mom had a Plymouth Valiant with the push button gearing and a slider thing to put it in park.

October 23rd, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Woo Hoo only Xterra on the island with traction bars and hood scoop, my daughter should have kept the car in Maui, guess she didn't realize her dad has racing gas for blood. Last post, don't want to be accused of being a "blooming flower"

October 23rd, 2009 at 4:09 pm
@Addison C - Hey Addison! Thanks for posting to the Midlife Crisis blog.
You didn't have to follow my genres of cars. You could've listed all exotic cars if you wanted to. Want to list them again?
Lexus - LFA: http://www.lexus.com/LFA/
October 24th, 2009 at 10:17 am
Hey Lexus peeps, don't forget to check that the model you're getting isn't the one with the floor mat problems w/accelerator.
After reading Rod's comment on a Bug w/baby windows (not kit car, right?), I'm thinking hmmm, Kharmann Ghia, type 14 or 34, convertible would be sweet. . .
Vintage/classic American pick up trucks (Mopar, Ford, Chevy) with the grilles. Chrome, fins, grills, yeah!
Anklebiters got me thinking Datsun 510.
October 24th, 2009 at 11:27 am

October 24th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
okay, got it.
1st, I'll keep my Benz.
But I'd go shopping for:
Honda Accord
Cuda
90 chevelle
Navigator.
Does the benz count? Is uncle gonna take care of that one or do I get another choice?
October 24th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
oops, the chevelle is a 69. sorry!
October 24th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
@janek3088 - Welcome to MLC! Yes, you can keep your Benzo and have 5 cars. Maybe an exotic car?
October 24th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
Check out the video titled Blastolene's Piss'd Off Pete.
Anybody want one?
http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/index.php?page=3
October 25th, 2009 at 5:20 am
Nope, not me. While I can appreciate the work that went into the Piss'd Off Pete, I'd be more than happy with a functional Peterbilt, like the model 389, with an 18spd manual transmission.
October 25th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Dear Uncle I don't want five cars but I want one car and a house instead... !
October 25th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
I nice house ( NOT A DUD full of termite house) ..you knwo a house close to amenities and a hospital in case the stupid car breask down I can walk!

Hey Uncle Rod,
Sorry for posting so behind but I've been a bit busy...but here are my answers for you...
If its for me...
A luxury car - Audi R8 in gunmetal grey
An exotic sports car - Audi R8 in silver
A vintage hot rod - 1969 Camaro SS (we have one sitting in the garage!) but I would choose my Nova from the tracks named II little Monkeys...ask Dad about this car!
A pick up truck - Have one in the drive way...Lifted Chevy 1500 crew cab 4x4
Something for Paula - a Vespa! Nah aunty! just playing...I would get you a mercedes SLR in white...i think you would totally match!
@Rod's Big Bro: daddy, i'm glad you are having fun with the car...i do miss my Xterra...i could boogie. but hopefully one day we can build my bluebird...
