70's Nightclub Reunion 6 - Outstanding!

August 3rd, 2009 by Rodney Lee

Robin Kimura and Candy Au really outdid themselves this time.  A showcase of bands like no other.  I'll let the pictures tell the story.

table-16

When we arrived, table #16 was waiting for us;  me and Paula, Sally, opso, Rod's Big Bro, C0hiba and friends, and NKHEA and company.
Mike in Waipio and his wife stopped by the table to meet us.  It was nice meeting you, Mike and Jill.  Thanks for stopping by to say "hi"!
And also to Gail Ohashi from Seattle.

First up on stage: GREENWOOD

greenwood-with-sign3

Greenwood immediately packed the dance floor and set the tone for the evening.

greenwood

After an awesome set by Greenwood, next band up was: ASIAN BLEND

asian-blend-1

These guys were hot!  And the female singers even hotter!  Right, opso

asian-blend-2

Asian Blend kept the dance floor packed throughout their set,
then it was time for GLASS CANDLE

Here's the horn section.

Next up after Glass Candle was POWER POINT

power-point-1

No brass section.  Power Point didn't need one.  Their music was awesome.

power-point-2

Power Point wrapped up their set as the anticipation was building.  The band that mostly everyone came to see took the stage - NATURAL HIGH

natural-high-1

When Natural High took the stage, the dance floor was packed.  But the people weren't dancing - they were just watching.  It was surreal.

natural-high-2

It's been 30 years since they've last played together - but you could never tell.  They sounded like the Natural High we remember from Hula Hut.

natural-high-3

natural-high-4

Rob Yamamoto and Roy Yonashiro barely aged over 30 years!

natural-high-5
After all these years, I'm still envious of Wayne Yoshimura's hair style

Reminds you of Rod Stewart?  He even sounded like him when he belted out Hot Legs!

natural-high-6

Natural High closed out the  70's Nightclub Reunion 6 on a high note.  And they even played Dreaming A Dream!

And what about the MCLers?  heh, heh

Yours truly with Roy Yonashiro of Natural High

MLCer Sally acting all geisha.  Kidding!

Overall it was the best 70's NCR yet, IMHO.

And now, for a word from the Midlife Crisis blog:

Robin Kimua and Candy Au go all out to bring us these events.  And as much effort that they pour into these events, the rewards are almost nothing.  It's not about making money as they pretty much break even after it's all said and done.

It's about giving us Baby Boomers a chance to relive our youths and recall the days of old.  Like Roy Yonashiro mentioned - Hula Hut is long gone.  It's just an empty lot of grass.  Memories gone.

But music lives on.  And we're so fortunate that these bands of yesteryear are willing to come back and allow us to reminisce and dance to the songs that we used to dance to when we had not a care in the world.

Robin and Candy heard a lot of complaints about ticket availability on this last one.  As you probably heard, both ballrooms were sold out in 33 minutes.  And not everyone could be accommodated.  To get through all the grumbling, Robin and Candy just kept repeating to themselves: "It is what it is".

So if you had a good time at any or all of the 70's Nightclub Reunion dances, show some love to Robin and Candy.  Let them know how it feels to be able to relive our youth again - if just for one night.

Post your words of appreciation here on the Midlife Crisis blog.  Or if you're internet shy, click on my name at the top of the page and email me.  I'll post your comments anonymously.  Or go to the 70's Nightclub Reunion web site for Robin's email and Candy's email addresses.  Email them directly to show your appreciation.  Either way works, but just let them know that their hard work does not go unrecognized.

Thank you Candy.  And thank you Robin.  Thank you for allowing us Baby Boomer (and MLCers) to feel young again.

I'll have more picture up on Wednesday.  In the meantime, please visit Irwin Santos' 70's Nightclub Reunion website for more picture from the 70's NCR 6.

Looks like it was a great event. Thanks for sharing Rod!

  2. anklebiters:

Hey :!: Who are those OLD peeps in the pics....oh, I'm on the wrong blog ;-)

Unfortunately, I wasn't on the isle to enjoy these bands in their prime (looks like they still are :!: ).

opso has TASTE when it comes to honey BEES :!:

When's the next '70s reunion :?: Possibilities of them having it in Vegas :?:

  3. sally:

    Good Morning!

Who you calling Geisha? Me and my fan... never leave home without it.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your table. Was fun even tho' I neva stay put for long. And how come a certain big bro don't wanna dance?

opso is good dancer, thanks for sharing the floor with me for those couple a songs.

  4. sally:

Re: sold out tickets... Don't be hard on Candy & Robin. Since the inception of these events tickets have always sold out. At Hawaiian Hut we turned away over 100 people at the door. When it went to Ilikai it was also sold out and people would lurk outside hoping for no shows so they could get in.

Now, at a smaller venue, people want to be sure they get in so they get their tables as soon as they know the tickets are ready.

"It is what it is" sounds harsh.. but it is. No can help. Whatchu gon do? Only get so much room without the fire marshall coming down.

    K, pau soap box.

  5. ducksinthewind:

Ankles, i know, and all sold out 2 ballrooms in 30 minutes? for the LV reunion, can you just swing by my house and honk the horn?

Well done, Rodney, and thousands of pictures! wow

  6. anklebiters:

    ducksinthewind:

You live in the Gilbert area or was that someone else :?:

  7. sally:

Gail Ohashi has a twinkle in her eye about the Seattle Boomer Blast being an annual event. I know she reads this blog so um, Gail, look at the possibilities! BTW, was good seeing your brother again... it's been years!

  8. sally:

Oh BTW, I didn't get a chance to say good night to the MLC table. Rodney, you were right behind me talking to Roy them and I turned around to see you and Paula walking back. I was calling you but you couldn't hear me. (NKHEAitis?) Then I looked and the table was cleared.

So... Good Night everybody! and mahalo!

  9. Ynaku:

Au'right. I know I missed out on this one. BUt glad yo all had fun.

Gotta give credit to Robin and Candy to even organize such an event. Not easy. They gotta do what they gotta do. It's their venue albeit smaller than the Blaisdell or other places, but the that's their place. Like you mentioned, The Hula Hut. Point After. places like that small. No can help.

Kudos to them for even putting together this as an Annual event. Need stuff like this for "US" MLC people.

In HIlo, we have groups like the Platters and Coasters coming, but we miss the local bands.

Thanks for bring together the groups. Makes us feel "young" again.

    OK time to go work.

  10. sally:

Would be really great if all the out of town MLCers could come in for this event. ooooh, would rock the house down!

If I lived in a mansion I'd house you all. But, as it stands, you'd have to sleep in your car if you stayed with me.

  11. Ynaku:

Holy Canoly went to the 70's website and get tones of pics. I no more time to go through all that :P

  12. sally:

Ynaku: yah, Irwin used to take all the pics himself but now he's got a posse with him. I remember the first time he said "wow, I got 500 pics from last night." Look now!

Have a great day all! Gotta leave early today.

    bye bye

  13. ducksinthewind:

hey Uncle Jimmy, i got a present for ya. scanned the mp3 file and its all clean, it came from my DJ Friend in Boston, who first introduced me to X Japan.

    You got mail

  14. NKHEA:

    Morning everybody :)

Tanks again UR & AP for getting the tickets and letting us join you folks ;) :) was guuuuud fun :P

Tanks Candy & Robin for putting this awesome Reunion together ;) :D

    NKHEA..... goin work now

  15. Rob Yamamoto:

    Hi Rod,

I just wanted to say how much I really enjoy your writing and the comments from all your friends and fans. I don't know why you don't have a regular column.
I passed by table 16 several times to tell you just that, but you weren't there. I'm pretty sure I saw you, but I wasn't too sure . Anyway, thanks for all the wonderful blog topics and the so many kind words about Natural High. I slept all Sunday trying to recuperate. Sheee, I wanted to know who NKHEA and IKHEA was. That's such cool blog names!
It was a total honor and privilege to play for all of you. Thank you so very much!

  16. kathi:

One of these times I'll actually get it right and be in Honolulu, not Chicago, when another Nightclub Reunion comes around. Rodney, thanks for sharing photos, looks like everyone had a great time!!

  17. snow:

looks like another fun night! too bad i missed it again! rodney, IKHEA was talking about the last one (at the party) and telling us how good it was - we really would like to try to make it to the next one! candy and robin surely work their tails off for this event - there's so much work involved! i hope that all who enjoy the fruits of their labor appreciate the two of them for all that they are worth!

  18. Rod's Big Bro:

@ Sally, sorry had important texting going on and den it was "there she goes, floating like a butterfly". Next time I promise.

@ Candy & Robin; though this was only my second one, the groups are great and a BIG "THANKS" for all the hard work.

@C0hiba; was fun talking with you and your brother and Randy sure knows alot of the ladies.

@NKHEA; was worth digging out early, waves was o/h and crowd?? Most didn't know where to line up, so had more than my share of boomers, cowabunga.

@Rod; Thank you and Paula for always being the "Point Man, uhmmm Couple" and taking care of all the MLCr's, imagine what would be like if all the Triad attended??

  19. Rodney:

@jaydee - You're welcome. I'll have more picture to link to later on.

@anklebiters - 70's NCR reunion in Vegas, eh? Gail Ohashi put on the Boomer Blast in Seattle this past Independence Day. I wouldn't be surprised if someone from Vegas coordinates one there.

@Sally, thanks for joining us at the table. My Big Bro went turn you down for dance?!? I hope he never use the "I resting" line.
btw, where did you go after the 70s NCR? Rumours or Zippys? Or both. Must've been late if the Honolulu Advertiser was already delivered by the time you got home. LOL

@Ynaku - too bad no more super ferry to the Big Island, yeah? The bands could take all their gear in trucks, perform for you guys, then head right back home.
As for the pictures from the 70's NCR site. I saw at least 1 of Sally. And I found the 2 that Irwin took of me. Now go find um.

@NKHEA - Thank you to you and the KHEA bunch for coming out. I hope they enjoyed themselves.

  20. Rodney:

@Rob Yamamoto - Rob, welcome to the Midlife Crisis blog and thank you for posting to it. And for your kinds words too. Shucks, I wish I was at the table when you passed by. It would've been nice to meet you!
But I wanted to say thanks to you and Roy and all of Natural High for willing to get back together after 3 decades - to play for us once again. Truly something to remember. Mahalo!

@kathi - Start planning a return trip home sometime in March or May.

@snow - Okay, watch for the next one. You guys don't have to dance if you don't want to - just kick back and listen to the live music. One of the main reason a lot of people dance is just to get closer to the band - especially for picture taking. he, he.

@Rod's Big Bro - Can you imagine Braddah Lance and Shauna there? They probably won't even recognize the songs. LOL

  21. Ynaku:

2 out of Five thousand??????? I going be here all day

  22. Ynaku:

81 no look like you

  23. opso:

Largo - mahalos again for a fun nite out! :D
and big props go out to Candy and Robin for putting these things together for all of us to enjoy!

heh.....was i staring?! was it that obvious?!

umm......we'll just wait for your pix. heh ;)

  24. Rodney:

@Ynaku - "81 no look like you" - thanks, eh.

  25. Ynaku:

Holy Pixels Batman. Irwin's file so big take long time load.

    http://www.70snightclubreunion.com/images/gallery/reunion_06/cam_supes/content/IMG_5184_large.html

Had to laugh seeing people still fit their Angel Flights and platform sh0es.

    I give up for now.

  26. Rodney:

Robin Kimura just emailed me. Here's what he had to say:

This event means much more to us than any material rewards or spoken accolades. We have been truly blessed to be able to do this for our generation. To see all of the bands on stage reunited as one and having a great time is my reward. Seeing all of the smiling faces and people renewing relationships/friendships that were long forgotten is my reward. The reward that I receive is…priceless. I am sure Candy feels the same way.

Thanks Rob. Spoken from the heart.

  27. Rodney:

@Ynaku - Oops, I forgot about that picture. The 2 I was talking about is in Irwin's gallery. Somewhere between pages 40 and 80.

  28. theDman:

In my case, as an outsider, this is a very interesting cultural event to share in. Having grown up on the BI, these groups are unknown to me. The whole 70s Honolulu nightclub scene is foreign. I did not realize these groups had such a following.

What did we have in Hilo back then?

Besides the Poly Room, there was no other club I can think of.

  29. M:

    Howzit Rodney!

Internet connection was down all day at work. :(

I couldn't even do my work because I needed to get a connection to get to the server..

Looks like everyone had a great time!

Where's the pictures of MLC dancing? nobody when dance?

  30. Ynaku:

Ho brah, you get plenny pikchas. Who dat you dancing with in 777? Nah joke. Youguys was having fun. Still LMAO at those platform sh0es peeps still wearing.

  31. sally:

    Hello Everybody!

You guys really must make it to the next one. Good fun. Altho' I cannot comprehend how sitting down all night is fun to some people. There's too many friends to catch up with.

You neighbor Isl folks, our bands used to go to Kauai and BI every weekend, you guys never went dancing back then?

LOL Rodney, looks like opso has a new poster for his wall. It should come with a towel to wipe up his drool.

  32. HNL2LAS:

Ooooh looks like you guys had fuuuuun!

  33. Superman808:

Ah...finally made it here...my trigger finger is sore from shooting all those photos. I brought in an extra photobug to snaps so that I could relax...nada...neva happen.

Anyway, for those of you that went...what a blast! I attend many boomer related events...but this one is the defacto gig to be at. It may appear that I'm biased cuz I run all the email promos, manage the website, be the Doorman, coordinate my photobug posse, and every once in awhile be security guard...but really, the place is so energized it's addictive.

BTW, I take more flak than Rob & Candy get combined regarding those tickets (or lack of) due to channeling over 400+ emails at a crack in each email blast run :-( That's the only bummer part that doesn't fly with me. "it is what it is"...so true.

    You got hours of time on your hand? Go check out the website;

  34. ducksinthewind:

me too, DMan, i remember dancing at the Poly Room, and on Kauai (other years) at the Beachboy and Club Jetty's

  35. Rodney:

@Superman808 - Howzit Irwin! Thanks for stopping by Midlife Crisis (MLC)!

Folks, Superman808 is Irwin Santos who... well, just as he said above. He plays a BIG part in making the 70's NCR a success. And those ton of pictures on the web site. Memories.

It never dawned on me, but I can see how you too would hear most of the rants about the tickets - since you're on the Front Line with the emails. (good thing you big)

Mahalo Irwin, for contributing in making the 70's NCR such a success. And for letting the memories live on - every day of the year.

And big, big mahalo for the MLC blog link on your site.

  36. Rodney:

*btw folks, check out the MLC Blogroll under my Pages category. Quick link to Irwin's 70's NCR site.

  37. fmcpike:

I've been to four of these night club reunions, including VI, and it has always proven to be a memorable experience. I have a few questions that I hope some of the people involved in planning these superb events will address.

On Saturday night, the Garden Lanai was cool and comfy. But the people in the ballroom (the vast majority) had to swelter in some pretty oppressive heat. I realize that people have varying tolerances, and dancing is exercise, but many people who chose to sit and listen to the bands were perspiring despite their limited physical activity. Is the hotel unable to provide a comfortable environment with crowds this size?

Another thing I've wondered about is why people have to buy script in order to get drinks. Why can't we just pay cash? I asked one of the bartenders, and he said its because the hotel doesn't trust them to handle money. Is this true? Besides being inconvenient and time consuming, this system often leaves people with $1.00 or $1.50 in unused script at the end of the night. On an individual basis this doesn't amount to much, but with a crowd of a thousand people it works out to $1,000 to $1,500 in free money to the hotel and out of people's pockets. Sure, you can always buy $5.00 worth of script at a time, but that means each time you want a drink you have to stand in the script line, then go stand in the drink line. This is time I'd rather spend being with friends or enjoying the awesome bands.

Finally, its clear that a much larger venue is needed. This is truly a prime event, one that many many more people would attend if they had the chance. Would it be possible to sponsor the event off site, like at the convention center or the exhibition hall at the Blaisdell? Would these places have adequate capacity and parking?

I know an event of this nature and magnitude requires a huge amount of time and energy. And all of us who have attended the 70's Night Club Reunions are grateful for the opportunity. But so many people were looking forward to going and were sorely disappointed because they didn't happen to check their email within a specific 33 minute time frame. And not for nothing, but when the organizers' primary response is "It is what it is," well, that strikes me as being a little callous and cavalier. Perhaps a more sensitive and appropriate response might be, "We know a lot of you were disappointed, and we'll be working to find ways to accommodate more of you at future reunions." When you have such a large base that so eagerly wants to support your event, they deserve more respect than a glib "It is what it is."

  38. sally:

    Good Morning!

Found a pic of the MLC table on Irwin's site. NKHEA & IKHEA & her sister. Couldn't find one of the whole table... shucks. Rodney, are you going to post all the pics you took somewhere?

  39. Ynaku:

    Thanks Superman808. I still going through all da pics. 5K+ 8O 8O 8O :P

  40. Ynaku:

Hey Rod, you special. You get your name up in lights on the 70's Night Club Reunion home page Whoo Hoo Big Time Bruddah.

Welcome all you 70's Reunion people. This is the place to be for MLC

  41. NKHEA:

    Goooood morning everybody :)

No can wait for the next "70's Reunion" already :D

Gatta run, training new worker :)

NKHEA....hope he still know what he doin

  42. M:

    Good morning Rodney and MLC'ers!

    Computer working at work! yay!

  43. Superman808:

@fmcpike...Thank you for taking the time to comment on the event. It's truly appreciated.

Q1 - At 6pm, the room was nice and cool. That all changes when you add bodies, and exponentially so when they start dancing. I was wearing my coat and tie all night long, and it was "OK", far from cool, but not sweltering. I'm sure if I was bobbing up and down like everyone else, that would certainly change. I believe the hotel adjusted their thermostat accordingly, but maybe the a/c just couldn't keep up. The Garden Lanai was like you said, cool and comfy. Since a fraction of the crowd was in there with no high ceiling, guests got to benefit from the high concentration of cool air.

Q2 - As for buying script....I certainly would like to trust my bartender's with cash...I don't have the real answer. However, from a 3rd person managerial point of view, I would think having less people touch cash would not only limit responsibility, but also serve for better security. Look at any of the carnivals we have now, you have to purchase scripts away from the serving venue. By doing so, and in case of this event, instead of having 20 people touch money, you have only 4. I know that it does take time to stand in multiple lines. I for one, just purchase a batch of scripts at a time (because I was buying for friends)...and know getting stuck with an extra script is a bummer. I'm staring at a $.50 ticket right now. I don't think the extra $$ that goes to the hotel was intentional in part of a master plan. The drink prices were posted on each of the cashier's tables, and with some quick math, guests can purchase accordingly. Think of it as a necessary evil that the establishment has, and we as patrons need to conform.

Q3 - As for another venue...it's not going to happen. Due to the relationship of Rob and Candy (they are long time friends), we're able to get the Ala Moana Hotel to co-sponsor this event. The hotel has given a lot of concessions to keep the prices down as low as possible. Beyond this bond, it will be a logistic nightmare...and with 6 gigs under our belt, it's now a cookie cutter operation. This event is not a profit related money maker of any kind. Monies generated are enough to cover costs. Costs such as purchasing airline tickets for those band members no longer living on Oahu, and securing hotel accommodations for these people. That's a big chunk of change on top of the normal operating expenses. To seek another venue will require the establishment to give the same type of concessions...that's a lot of work, and tremendous time to invest. Since the concept of the 70's Nightclub Reunion is to "have fun" versus making money, there has to be someone out there willing to do this for $nothing$, and expect nothing in return.

You really have to love doing what you're doing...for example, I offer my web development and promo services for free. If I tallied everything up per event...that's a $3000+ price tag. I do it because I can, and really enjoy being part of something bigger than myself. Almost everyone involved contributes in some form or fashion.

Q4 - "it is what it is"...that's our tagline at the end of a tactful "We know a lot of you were disappointed, and we'll be working to find ways to accommodate more of you at future reunions" response similar to yours.

Apparently, as posted here on the BLOG it's taken out of context without the supporting leading statement (like yours).
    ------------------------------------------------------

For those reading...the concept of the "70's Nightclub Reunion" started like this; Let's have a few bands get together, and they can invite their friends and family...if there is EXTRA room, we can invite the public too.

It always has and will always be, the bands first.

Most of the public doesn't understand this concept and for the most part think that they have an absolute right to be there. So when they respond to "How come the bands get all those tables, seats, etc.?" they get pi$$ed. When I run the email promos, I mention this, and a good majority just ignore this IMPORTANT item. This is what drives the uniqueness of the event.

Surely, the 70s NCR wouldn't be as big as it is without the general public and we're thankful to those that have attended.

As one of the promoters, I was sick from all the responses that came in (about 100+ email/phone calls) from those that couldn't get a seated ticket. About 1/2 of those were the nasty variety. Between Rob, Candy, and myself, we shared alot of grief, and yet, the event sold out, which should make us happy. Go figure.

Anyway, we're tossing around ideas about how to sell the next gig's tickets to avoid the inescapable flak as best as possible. The "email surprise" announcement didn't work as expected. It worked well for #IV & V. This time around, the focused targeted group is now 425 email address at this writing.

BTW, there was no major press release this time around to announce the gig or selling of tickets. Either by my email database and word of mouth the tickets got sold in record time...33 minutes. WOW!

Again, Mahalo to all that attended. We're people too that strive to have a great time, wanting to bring as many of those that wish to join us. And frankly, this event truly "is what it is."

  44. Roy Yonashiro:

    Hi Rod,
Thank you so much for your wonderful comments and for coming down to see all the bands at the 70s Nightclub Reunion. It was fun, wasn't it?
I felt like I was back at the Hula Hut again! A big mahalo to Candy Au and Robin Kimura for putting on this event every year. They and their staff did an awesome job!
On behalf of all the guys in Natural High, we would like to thank you for inviting us to be a part of it. It was a night we will never forget.
    With fond aloha,
    Roy

  45. Mike in Waipio:

    Rodney,
It was great meeting you and Paula. I wish the setting had been more visitor-friendly to allow me to visit with all the MLCers at your table. Still, awesome party. I was so overwhelmed that I forgot that I meant to ask you an old question: did anyone confirm the Kailua Intermediate/ Kailua High switch and if so, when? I lived in Pohakupu from late 1958 to summer 1960 and I think I remember Kailua Intermediate being in Pohakupu.

  46. KAN:

It looks like it was a great event - lots of praise to Candy Au, Robin Kimura, and Irwin Santos for sweating all the details and dodging all the bullets.

Lots of people have no idea what it takes to put on an event of this kind, including me. I do know people who are event organizers/concert promoters/tour managers, and I hear about all the complaints they get from people who are there to enjoy all the benefits of the event and suffer none of the trauma. 90 percent of communications from "civilians" that organizers/management get are complaints, and only 10 percent are compliments.

Lots of people also think that organizers and musicians make tons of money. Believe me, unless you are Coldplay or someone comparable, you don't.

Please understand I'm not ranting about fmcpike, who stated his/her concerns in a respectful manner.

KAN . . . going to stop ranting now.

  47. Rodney:

@Sally - I'm going to try to put all my pictures in a Photobucket folder (well, the pictures worth viewing anyway) and have the readers link to it. Too many to post.
So... you didn't answer my question - to come home AFTER the newspaper was delivered - did you go to Zippy's or Rumours?
Oh wait. Sorry. I didn't mean to  you. No need to answer the question. I figured it out.

  48. Rodney:

@theDman - I looked at the bands Bio's and most of them traveled to Kauai and Maui to play - but not the Big Island. Hmm...

@M - Glad you got you computers back on at work. At least the a/c didn't go out.

@Ynaku - re: picture # 777 - Thanks for finding that picture for me! Paula just asked last night about that one that Irwin took. Plus, # 777 * we should go Vegas*

@ducksinthewind - email sent your way. Need yours or RBB's help in answering @Mike in Waipio's question. Was before my time...

  49. Rodney:

@fmcpike - Thank you for posting your questions and concerns here and welcome to MLC. Feedback is always appreciated. I hope that Irwin answered your questions and addressed your concerns sufficiently. And stop by MLC in the future also - to share your memories and along with the rest of us.

@Superman808 - Thanks Irwin. I appreciate you help and support.

@Roy Yonashiro - Roy! You guys sounded awesome. I hope that maybe this is just the beginning of a once-every-couple/few-years reunion for Natural High. You guys looked like you were just enjoying yourselves on stage.
Please relay our thanks to the band for allowing us MLCers to revisit our past - if just for one night. *sigh*

@Mike in Waipio - Mike, thank you so much for stopping by our table to introduce yourself. At least now I can put a face to the name. And also, thanks for stopping by at the end of the night to introduce your wife. It was so nice to meet the two of you. You folks looked like you had a good time.
btw, I have a call out to Ducksinthewind and/or Rod's Big Bro. Hopefully they can answer you questions about when you used to live in Pohakupu.

@KAN - One of these days when you come home for a visit - hopefully one of these bands will be playing someplace so we can get the MLCers together.

  50. ducksinthewind:

RBB's birthday page MLC comes up on a web search of "kailua high and intermediate"! Hey, Big Bro, you are famous!

    Mike in Waipio:

I went to Kailua elementary and then intermediate until 68, when they were separated by a field and all. Back when it was still pretty countrified.
Went to Punahou for high school. I remember a separate intermediate school being built closer to the Marine Base (Kalaheo? now both intermediate and HS?), but wow -- now there is Olomana High and intermediate too.

I think when i was a kid, our neighbor went to high school at the present intermediate...
    http://kailuahs.k12.hi.us/about.html

"Kailua High School was founded in 1955, at the present site of Kailua Intermediate School. In 1962, Kailua High School moved to its present campus on 451 Ulumanu Drive."

Mike, if there is anything i can answer, just ask.

  51. C0hiba:

@Largo, very nice of Irwin to take the time and make the effort to answer fmcpike's questions and explain the concept of the event. Always nice to understand how events evolved.
I'm pretty sure I saw Greenwood at Maui Beach Hotel in the late 70's or early 80's. My friend was the trumpet player and there was guy named Randy singing. I see Randy in one of the old Greenwood posters but don't see my trumpet player friend. Could have been Talismen.

@opso, have you turned the picture into a life sized poster yet?

@RBB, you're right, C0hipal sure did know alot of women there. Problem is, they were all his wife's good friends. He had to be good boy all night.

  52. sally:

@Rodney: I went to Likelike (not exactly one of my fave places but that's where the ride went). I had to take my car home, as it started killing over more often and I was scared to drive 'um already. Lots of talk story to wind down at the end of a very aerobic night.

BTW, my car is officially out of commission so now my friend picks me up on the way to work. After work I walk over to Central Y, do an abreviated workout, then walk home. I decided I could skip the cardio since I cardio all the way home. I guess I should consult with Lori at her blog huh?

So this is my life until my nephew can run diagnostics and fix my poor car. boo hoo hoo, life without wheels. But hey, could be worse huh?

  53. C0hiba:

@Sally, nice to see Bev at the event. Have not seen her, probably since high school. What kine work does she do? Is she married, kids?
What does Sheldon do? I think she told me that night, but NKremember.

  54. sally:

@C0hiba: doesn't she look great? She still works at Hanohano Room, ever since graduation. Dat's a lonnnnnng time. She must own da place by now. LOL

You didn't meet her BF? He was there. I haven't seen Sheldon since high school, wonder if I'd recognize him.

I think my brother sees her more than I do since she goes to Longs Kaimuki a lot. He always sees plenny old friends when he working, which is like all da time.

BTW, that was a great sight to see you and her seeing each other again. That's what this NCR is all about.

  55. sally:

Irwin, thanks for being the voice of reason. You've worked so hard and gave so much of your own time ever since the very first event at Hawaiian Hut.

Wanted to make an MLC comment about your header pic on the NCR VI site. Reminds me of Romper Room with Miss Robin's Magic Mirror.
"I see Lloyd, and I see Taff, and I see Terry, and I see Ms Miz!"

    Love you... you da best!
from Sally (trixie) hee hee hee

  56. C0hiba:

@sally, yeah that was nice. Thanks for doing that.
For the little that I saw on the photo sight, there sure were a lot of pictures of her.
    Heading home. Crossed eyed.

  57. Rodney:

@C0hiba - was that an old g/f of yours?

@Sally - You don't see me? I'm right under the letter H - behind the guy taking a picture. I'm also holding up a camera - playing papaRodzzi.
Likelike drive in, eh? I figure Makiki Zippy's must've been packed.
Ok, maybe not. MLCers like sleep.

  58. sally:

@Rod: Makiki Zips is my go-to place. They got Jello Parfait, perfect to top off a night. Likelike is kinda dark and dank. But, with the right friends, was still good fun.

Yah, you pretty stealth with the camera hahaha. Jus' like my friend, you think he taking pics but then later on you find yourself making A on YouTube. Oh my my.

    (papaRodzzi... dat's funnee!)

  59. c0hiba:

@Largo, nope. Neighbor. She could kick my okole.
Kaimuki girls are tough. Look at sally. Still sore. Lol

  60. sally:

    Eh I still stay.

We HAD to be tough, look at what we had to be in school with!

  61. sally:

@C0hiba: Time to go nene, try not to talk stink while I'm gone.

  62. Superman808:

@Sally...geez girl, you got so many aliases...The pic above...I see...."ooh, Trixie is hea"....

Sorry about your wheels...I remember the first day you got it...we ate at the On-On Chinese restaurant

  63. sally:

@supes: yah, mah baby is temporarily out of commission. But my nephew to da rescue! Will be back soon.

    ok, really gotta nene.

    zzzzzzzzzzzzz

  64. Roy:

Oh yeah, a big mahalo to Irwin "Superman" Santos for always coming down to these events and many others and taking pictures for everyone to enjoy. He does this out of love for the music and friends and is very supportive of the bands. Next time any of you see him, give him a smile and a big "Mahalo" for all he does for us. Yeah Supes!

  65. Mike in Waipio:

    ducksinthewind:
Thanks for the info. Hearing that Kailua High relocated in 1962 confirms that my memory is not a total loss.
And thanks to Rodney for getting my question out so ducksinthewind could comment.
    MAHALO MLCers.

  66. Russ Shiroma:

Hey, Rod. Great to finally meet you in person! Seattle-Gail Ohashi and I enjoyed ourselves and further realized how important these events are. One giant reunion for the bands and friends! We couldn't turn our heads without bumping into someone we knew from the past. I too am an 'ol skool musician who appreciate all the effort that went into creating such a huge and impactful event! Good job as always...Rob, Candy, Supes, and all the bands!

    Hana Hou!
    Russo

  67. Rodney:

Just want to share an email with everyone:

Rodney....my wife & I attended our first 70's nite on Saturday..we really had a great time. My wife grad Farrington in ' 74, and she really enjoyed the music. I am a mainland guy, but still had a great time and the music was great..Let Candy & Robin know that they planned a great event!!! ........Fred

You just did, Fred. Thanks for allowing me to sharing your words of appreciation with everyone. Mahalo.

  68. Rodney:

@Mike in Waipio - See! Your memory is still good. Thanks also to Ducksinthewind. I love it when MLCers can help out each other.

@Russ Shiroma - It was great to meet you too Russo. Keep me abreast of when you guys will be playing again. I want to see you guys performing. Maybe we'll get the MCLers to come out too (they like to party).
Thanks for you words of appreciation to Rob, Candy, and Supes.
And thank you to Gail Ohashi for introducing us.

  69. Rodney:

@Fred - Thanks for your email. It really means a lot to those involved in putting together such a big event that their efforts not go unnoticed.

You're such a nice husband to be from the mainland - not familiar with the bands - and yet accompany your wife to this event. And the best part of it is that you also had a great time!

See you at 70's NCR 7.

  70. Seattle Gail:

@Rodney - great to finally meet you at the 70's Reunion...what a small world with COhiba, my brother, Randy; Sally (yea, Kaimuki!). Back in Seattle now, but will be back mid-October for Kaimuki '69 reunion at the Garden Lanai. King Pins will be playing! Sally and I were at Big City Diner-Kailua on Aug 14 to party with my best bud, Russ Shiroma and The BeatBoys. They were fabulous as usual! One of the many highlights of the night was Harv Yamauchi (King Pins), Randall Rosenberg (King Pins), and Jerry Vierkoetter jamming....awesome!!! It was a night of talent in the audience...Joe Hee, San Man, Glenn Nishida, in addition to all the King Pins and BeatBoys. Can't forget good pals, "Sally" and Sharon. Photos and videos to be posted soon to my Facebook!

    @COhiba - see ya around!!!

@Sally - I know I'll be seeing you around soon!!

@Rob Yamamoto - when I saw you at 70's Reunion, I was saying to my friend, "he sure looks like this guy I graduated with." Roy confirmed it was you! You haven't changed!

  71. Rodney:

Aloha Gail. It was nice meeting you too. And C0hiba and Randy - yes, truly a small world. I missed the Big City Diner event this past Friday, but got a sneak peek on Sally's Face Book page. Looking forward to more videos. I HAVE to catch them some day soon. And it was great to meet Russ Shiroma too. Thanks for introducing him to me.
Rob Yamamoto is your classmate?! Not only a small world, but even smaller State!

Glad to hear you're back safe in Seattle. I heard there was a big Hawaii contingent in Seattle, but I never thought I'd meet any of them. Hopefully this is just a beginning of more Seattle-ites with Hawaii connections that will keep in touch with their Hawaii roots.

Thanks again, Gail. See you again soon on MLC!
