Friday Musings

July 10th, 2009 by Rodney Lee

Lots of things to list so here we go:

First of all - local boy Shane Victorino made it to the All Star game!  Mahalo to all the MLCers who voted for him.  Local Boy Does Good.

This weekend is the annual Korean Festival as Kapiolani Park.  But remember, it's on Friday and Saturday.  We're planning to be there on Saturday.  To see last year's MLC's Korean Festival recap, visit 2008 Korean Festival.  If you plan on going, you can park at Kapiolani Community College and catch a shuttle to and from the Korean Festival.

Tonight (Friday) 70's band White Light will be playing at Hawaiian Brian's from 8:30 to 11:30 PM.  Remember, they won't be playing at the next 70's Nightclub Reunion so here's your chance to check them out.

Someday I hope to meet Joy
And if you can't make it, you'll have another chance to see them on 7/31/09 at Ige's in Pearl City.

Remember Primo beer?  Well, you've probably heard that it's now available again with a brand new recipe - taste tested by Hawaii's own beach boys.  Well, to celebrate Hawaii's upcoming 50 years of Statehood, a limited edition Draft-only ale is being brewed - Primo Statehood Ale.

“Primo wants to do something special to commemorate Hawaii’s rich history and Primo Statehood Ale is just the right fit,” said Kyle Wortham, Director of Marketing at Primo Brewing & Malting Co. “We’ve created a celebratory craft beer with a different flavor profile from our Island Lager. The new brew is an exceptionally balanced and smooth-drinking Pale Ale with a nice floral hop aroma. We know local people will enjoy it because many locals gave us input on how the beer should taste.”

Ask for it at select bars and restaurants on Oahu and Maui.

Oh, can't forget about shopping.  Kahala Mall has a sidewalk sale this weekend.  Maybe we'll swing over after the Korean Festival.

And you'll probably need some money to go shopping, so check out this site:
Unclaimed Property Search
You may have some unclaimed cash waiting for you.  Or your immediate family members.  Or your relatives.  Or you neighbors.  Or you co-workers.  One co-worker of mine had over $3,000 sitting in there.  She was so happy Paula found it for her, that she treated us to dinner!  And even if you searched before and found nothing, there may have been some money that went in since your last search.

And finally, for KAN and all the other Hawaii transplants in Seattle, here's a hilarious video of the Boomer Blast Seattle that took place on July 4th in Seattle with The Beatboys and The King Pins.

Mahalo to Gail Ohashi for sending me this video

So what are your MLC plans for this busy summer weekend?

  1. M:

    Good Morning Rodney!

Tonight is masako and I Friday night dinner date and tomorrow son has soccer game in the afternoon. They beat Kahuku last night at Kahuku 3-1. They are 6-0 and out scored their opponets 15-3. Tomorrow is against Midpac. I don't think we will be able to go to the Korean Festival but Kahala Mall sidewalk sale might be possible. Masako loves sidewalk sales.

  2. NKHEA:

    Morning Mr. 8O

    NKHEA....gatta run 4 now

  3. visitor:

Don't think we'll go to the Korean festival. Definitely will go to Kahala Mall this weekend.

Primo should lower their price. Back in the old days, one reason Primo was so popular was that it was reasonable. Now, I've seen Primo 'on sale' for $5.99 for a 6-pack...and regular price at about $8.00 @ 6-pack. At those prices, too many other choices.

  4. M:

I have an original Primo beer unopened.

  5. visitor:

M - Is it the stubby bottle? Primo also came in the blue can and later the gold/white can. I recall when working at the supermarket in high school, a case of Primo was about $5.00. Of course that was many, many moons ago.

  6. M:

visitor, it is the stubby bottle.

  7. Ynaku:

Whoo Hoo. FRIDAY. Go McD order an Extra Value Meal and get a coke glass.

  8. BananaFysh:

Korean Festival? Tell Paula to watch out for the "opihi lady" from last year.

I hope she's been practicing the "fut on demand" to get her off her back. haha!

I guess Shauna's going to run away with another cardboard cut out as well. ;)

  9. Ynaku:

Bwahahaha BF, I forgot about the "opihi Lady" Have Aunty Paula or Rodney eat plenny Takuan and put a buffer between her.

  10. Rodney:

Sidewalk sales at Kahala Mall this weekend means sidewalk sale at Ala Moana next weekend!

M, you have a stubby? Those are the Primo bottles I remember.

visitor, think if Primo was more affordable, people would drink more? I remember back-in-da-day, there were 2 main beers: Primo and Olympia.

Just bumped into Kelli while going to lunch. She said she doesn't know if she can make it to the Korean Festival since she started school. Okay, if it rains tomorrow at the Korean Festival, I'm going to blame Kelli for not going.

  11. NKHEA:

    oops sorry, ment Mr. 8)

    NKHEA....havin MLC moment

  12. volleymom2:

    Korean Festival for me!

  13. visitor:

Rodney - yeah, Primo and Oly... A bit later 'baby' Millers became popular...8-pack 8 oz bottles of Miller.

  14. Uncle Rod's Niece:

Hi Uncle Rod! I am sooooo sad not be able to make it to the Korean Festival. I saw KGMB morning crew talking about it the other morning and I just had to watch the whole segment and see what kinds food they were showing, I was late for work. And worse yet! I have been sooo ono for some good Korean cooking. There is no Kim Chee restaurant types here or any Camillia Buffets where I can get my fix. I usually have to wait for Dad to bring me something. Last time it was Korean sushi from Palama Market.yum. Make sure u eat LOTS of korean pancakes and takuan and kim chee for me!!! lots of love to u, aunty paula and the girls!

  15. HNL2LAS:

Korean festival and Kauai for me tomorrow!

  16. Rodney:

Volleymom2 - stop us if you see us at the Korean Festival. Hmm, I just had meat jhun for dinner last night and bi bin bap for lunch today. Looks like it's shaping up to be a Korean food weekend.

visitor - all this talk of beer just gave me a topic idea.

URN (Uncle Rod's Niece) - No good kine Korean restaurants there that you know of? Try wait...

HEY BANANAFYSH - Where are the good Korean restaurants on Maui?

Okay, let's see what that drums up.

  17. HNL2LAS:

I totally forgot about the "opihi" lady too! bahhaah! oh oh... hopefully she won't be anywhere near AP this year!

  18. Rodney:

HNL2LAS - Korean Festival AND Kauai?! Kook Soo and Hamura saimin, eh?

  19. BananaFysh:

    You rang? ;)

Hm, lemme think. Yeah, Maui no more the equivalent of the Kim Chee chain of restaurants, but there are some decent places on Maui.

Tiffany's on Lower Main Street has good kim chee fried rice. The have other stuff too. It's a bar/restaurant, and is pretty popular. Get stuff like honey walnut shrimp and crispy pork, so not just Korean food.

Asian Cuisine in Kahului Shopping Center is okay. The food is pretty good, and has a pretty full menu of Korean food, as well as "local style" food, and sushi. The bad thing about that place is the service: it can be REALLY slow sometimes. One time I had to wait almost an hour for take out! I think that might have been the exception though.

For the life of me, I cannot remember the name of the place on Mill Street in Wailuku. It's across the street from Hale Makua. It's a small take out place, but the food there is good. Gah! MLC moment. ;)

  20. Rod's Big Bro:

    Hey Rod,
I will try to make da Korean festival but won't be until da afternoon, my ladies team has a match at Salt Lake den we usually go eat and talk story. It's too bad the only single player is a single mom and 16 yrs. younger than me.

Then I need to go to Jamba Juice in Kapahulu and talk with a girl working there, I think she's too young also, but gotta try and find out. I should put my bike in da car and then ride around from Kapahulu to the Korean Festival. If not maybe I'll catch up with you at Kahala Mall, will call for find you.

Too bad I read this so late otherwise I could have gone to Hawaiian Brian's for couple hours, oh well. So how old you going be in about a week and a half, 51??, kay den talk to you later.
    Peace & Out,
    RBB

  21. Rod's Big Bro:

@ Rod & Paula, I found that when I have a Aloha Pineapple smoothie from JJ with soy protein and whey protein can almost create "FOD" (fut on demand). This is my usual lunch after a surf session and that's how I found out about this side affect.

  22. c0hiba:

    This town is too small.
Ran into Largo @ Sugois then the kheas at Marukai.
No can go under cover in this town.

  23. kathi:

Chicago's Korean Festival isn't until August, but now I am hungry for Korean food and will be heading over to Super H Mart or ASSI for the fixings or maybe just the food court! If not today, sometime this week for sure.

  24. NKHEA:

C0hiba: busted at the French restaurnt 8O nah

  25. KAN:

Thanks for the video Rodney (and Gail!) - that was HILARIOUS! That poor police officer - hard to maintain dignity with somebody waving body parts in your face!

  26. BananaFysh:

Oh, found out the name of the Korean plate lunch place on Mill Street -- it's JB's.

After mentioning Tiffany's yesterday, I had to go eat lunch there. ;)

We had the kim chee fried rice, honey walnut shrimp and spicy chicken. Everything was good! The chicken could have been spicier, though. ;)

  27. BananaFysh:

Oh, hello KAN! Hope you're feeling better! :)

  28. KAN:

Thanks BF! I am feeling better. Less dizzy and nauseated now (no comments about how can I tell I'm less dizzy?)

  29. Uncle Rod's Niece:

@bananafysh: my dad told me u lived up here...somewheres in my neighborhood. anyways, Tiffany's is ok but you have to remember me, Oahu girl, have many places and "hole" in the walls for homemade Korean food not to mention all the yobo families i have to cook for me . I've learned to either wait till i get back home and go food searching or just wait for someone to come and bring me food. BUT! I must say this weekend i went to a baby 1st party and they had the meanest kim chee there! OMG! Uncle Rod, it looked like the kim chee Aunty Alice use to have at her house on New Year's Day! Korean pancakes please? extra spicy chapchai please?!

  30. Seattle Gail:

    Hi Rodney and KAN!
