Do You Remember... TV Game Shows

July 6th, 2009 by Rodney Lee

Tonight while channel surfing, Paula and I stopped to watch The Million Dollar Password with Regis Phibin as the host.  Besides the different host and the amount of money, the game was played pretty much the same.  Guest celebrities matched up with regular folks to form the team.

I remember once when I was playing at my friend's (Brian) house, I saw his sister watching TV with a big Hitachi fan box blocking the bottom portion of the TV.  I had to go over to the sliding screen doors to check it out.  She was watching Password and used the box to block the answer on the bottom of the screen - so she could play along.  Pretty ingenious I thought.  Paula said she just used to turn her head and listen to the clues to try and guess the word.  And yes, she was doing it tonight too.

Then it got me thinking of all the old games shows I used to watch on network TV back in the day.

Let's Make A Deal immediately came to mind.  It was so entertaining to watch the fools hopeful contestants dressed up in wacky contumes.  And I always couldn't wait to see the booby prizes behind the huge doors or the big gift wrapped boxes.  Do you recall who was the Vanna White of Let's Make A Deal?

Do these videos bring back some memories?

What old network TV game shows did you used to watch?  Did you used to play along with the game shows?  What were your favorite network TV game shows?  Let's see how many old game shows our MLC memories can recall.  So far we have Password, Let's Make A Deal, The Newlywed Game, and The Dating Game.

  1. Matt:

    cardsharks

  2. KAN:

What was that Pyramid game? (No, not the pyramid scheme - sadly those are still around.)

  3. KAN:

    Match Game 75.

  4. sally:

    Ohayoo Gozaimasu!

I loved Password, Bette White was (and still is) Queen of Password. And the Dating Game Song: Herb Alpert's Spanish Flea. He had great music!

That Let's Make a Deal girl had some weird rhymie name I think it was Carol Merrill or something like that. Who was the original letter turner before Vanna White? Can't remember the name.

Dating Game kinda creeped me out. Like, what if you got stuck with a real yukky or oojie date? I guess they figured they got a free dinner out of it.

  5. sally:

Kan: oh yah! $20,000 Pyramid was da BEST game!

Rodney: so did I get the right answer? Carol Merrill? Is there a prize? Like O&E? Virtual chicken katsu curry from L&L? Or 1doz Champion Malasadas? Can I keep going on asking only questions?

  6. kathi:

The old ones I liked back way when were the original "Password" (enjoy watching the current one occasionally too), "Jeopardy" (same), "Eye Guess" and "Concentration."

When I was working midnights in the mid-80s, we'd go to the bar after work and stick around to watch "Press Your Luck" a couple times a week. The "Whammy" is not nearly as amusing if you have not been drinking :)

  7. sally:

Doing this in between putting my makeup on, only now got to watch the Dating Game video. What da heck song is dat? I thought the theme was Spanish Flea? Or did that come later? Or was I hallucinating? Why do I keep writing in questions?

  8. King Katonk:

How about the old "Hollywood Squares?"

It was entertaining watching a game show with B-list celebrities trying to sound knowledgeable. At the end of the show they had a disclaimer stating that these stars were given the answers ahead of time…and they still sounded like a bunch of lolos.

    @sally
Regarding the music of the Dating Game you are correct Spanish Flea was the intro for the bachelors. When they introduced a bachelorette they played Whipped Cream. When the final pick came out to meet their date they played Lollipops and Roses. All of these tunes were performed by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

  9. sally:

whew! thought I was hallucinating from lack of sleep. Thanks.

BTW, the original Squares is funnier now that we're adults and can understand all the jokes. There's an email with a bunch of HS answers... hilarious!

Hey Rodney, where's your other friend? Overslept? WWD?

  10. volleymom2:

    1. Let's Make a Deal- I think it was Carol Merrill
    2. Password
    3. Dating Game
    4. Newlywed Game- my favorite
    5. Concentration
    6. The Match Game- my other favorite
    7. Tattle Tales- was that the name?

  11. sally:

Newlywed Game and Match Game, I thought those two hosts were kinda oojie. hahaha

    ok... time for eyeshadow

  12. M:

    Good Morning Rodney! :)

My favorite was the Newlywed game.

  13. Kage:

    Good Morning All!

    My favorites were:
    Matchgame
    Hollywood Squares
    Password

  14. Ynaku:

    The Price is Right

  15. Ynaku:

    The Jokers Wild

    Come face the Devil.

  16. Ynaku:

    eh

    Wheel of Fortune.

Still going and the same people there. Vanna still looks good :P

  17. sally:

That's cuz we all aging at the same time LOL. It's all relative.

Sayonara all. Gotta go work, back tonight.

  18. Rod's Big Bro:

    Hi Rod,
All these young'uns out there, how about these shows:

    1. Name That Tune
    2. $64,000 Question (not sure of the amount)
    3. Truth or Consequences

Now these are some on the only but good's, kind of not really watch cause I get upset when people can't answer what to me seems simple questions. Did you also research how many of these shows had allegations of being rigged, mainly cause the audience liked a certain contestant and to keep the ratings they would have the person keep coming back (oops, time to give Mom her medicene), okay I'm back.

Guess that's all I can think of for now, all the one's in the 60's to present are easy to remember.

  19. Rod's Big Bro:

@ Sally, get a FB page and you'll get all the VR chicken curry and great foods from many of us at MLC.

  20. KAN:

I was cleaning out emails when I came across these lines from the old "Hollywood Squares." For those too young to remember, Peter Marshall was the host and Paul Lynde was always the best middle square:

    Q. Paul, what is a good reason for pounding meat?
    A. Paul Lynde (About fifteen minutes later): Loneliness!

And the audience laughed for another 10 to 15 minutes.

    Q. Do female frogs croak?
    A. Paul Lynde: If you hold their little heads under water long enough.

    Q. If you're going to make a parachute jump, at least how high should you be?
    A. Charley Weaver: Three days of steady drinking should do it.

    Q. True or False, a pea can last as long as 5,000 years.
    A. George Gobel: Boy, it sure seems that way sometimes.

    Q. According to Cosmopolitan, if you meet a stranger at a party and you think that he is attractive, is it okay to come out and ask him if he's married?
    A. Rose Marie: No wait until morning.

    Q. Which of your five senses tends to diminish as you get older?
    A. Charley Weaver: My sense of decency.

    Q. In Hawaiian, does it take more than three words to say 'I Love You'?
    A. Vincent Price: No, you can say it with a pineapple and a twenty.

    Q. What are "Do It," "'I Can Help," and "I Can't Get Enough"?
    A. George Gobel: I don't know, but it's coming from the next apartment.

    Q. As you grow older, do you tend to gesture more or less with your hands while talking?
    A. Rose Marie: You ask me one more growing old question Peter, and I'll give you a gesture you'll never forget.

    Q. Paul, why do Hell's Angels wear leather?
    A. Paul Lynde: Because chiffon wrinkles too easily.

    Q. Charley, you've just decided to grow strawberries. Are you going to get any during the first year?
    A. Charley Weaver: Of course not, I'm too busy growing strawberries.

    Q. In bowling, what's a perfect score?
    A. Rose Marie: Ralph, the pin boy.

    Q. It is considered in bad taste to discuss two subjects at nudist camps. One is politics, what is the other?
    A. Paul Lynde: Tape measures.

    Q. During a tornado, are you safer in the bedroom or in the closet?
    A. Rose Marie: Unfortunately Peter, I'm always safe in the bedroom.

    Q. Can boys join the Camp Fire Girls?
    A. Marty Allen: Only after lights out.

    Q. When you pat a dog on its head he will wag his tail. What will a goose do?
    A. Paul Lynde: Make him bark?

    Q. If you were pregnant for two years, what would you give birth to?
    A. Paul Lynde: Whatever it is, it would never be afraid of the dark.

    Q. According to Ann Landers, is there anything wrong with getting into the habit of kissing a lot of people?
    A. Charley Weaver: It got me out of the army.

    Q. It is the most abused and neglected part of your body, what is it?
    A. Paul Lynde: Mine may be abused, but it certainly isn't neglected.

    Q. Back in the old days, when Great Grandpa put horseradish on his head, what was he trying to do?
    A. George Gobel: Get it in his mouth.

    Q. Who stays pregnant for a longer period of time, your wife or your elephant?
    A. Paul Lynde: Who told you about my elephant?

    Q. When a couple have a baby, who is responsible for its sex?
    A. Charley Weaver: I'll lend him the car, the rest is up to him

    Q. According to Ann Landers, what are two things you should never do in bed?
    A. Paul Lynde: Point and laugh.

  21. BananaFysh:

    @KAN -- Those are awesome! :)

I remember watching The Price is Right a lot when I was a kid. That big wheel kinda freaked me out. I was afraid of someone getting caught in the wheel, and then getting thrown in the air! But now when I think about it, that would have actually been pretty cool to see.

My mom used to watch The Match Game but I didn't understand the jokes.

    "What's 'whoopie'?" :? haha!

  22. jaydee:

KAN, that was my favorite daytime show back in those days.

I liked Password, Hollywood Squares, Concentration and Jeopardy when "small kid". Now I might watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

In fact, my cousin was on Wheel of Fortune a few months ago when they were on the Big Island. He wasn't the overall winner but he did win some cash and a vacation to Cancun, Mexico.

  23. Kage:

I remember watching many of these shows and how everyone would get excited about the trip to HAWAII.
I used to think, "What's the big deal??"

  24. M:

How about "The Family Feud" with Richard Dawson.

  25. M:

    The "Gong Show"

  26. BananaFysh:

    Yeah! The Gong Show!

I liked "Gene, Gene, The Dancing Machine."

  27. zzzzzz:

How about "Remote Control" on MTV? That was the first place I saw Adam Sandler, Colin Quinn, Kari Wuhrer, Dennis Leary, etc.

  28. snow:

i used to love the newlywed game... and that was when i was little! not sure why i liked it so much! also used to watch password... every day after school, i think... later, it was $20,000 pyramid. i don't know why, but i didn't like hollywood squares. i think i thought paul lynde was annoying... wasn't charles nelson riley on that show later, too? i used to watch the dating game, too... always hoping that the contestant would pick the best one (in my opinion, anyway!)!

sally - now i have herb alpert songs repeating in my head!

  29. unca juncz:

  30. snow:

bananafysh - i wonder what i thought "whoopie" was when i used to watch the newlywed game all the time when i was little?!

  31. JindoMaster808:

@KAN - I'm with you Match Game and Hollywood Squares. Those HS lines were funny funny funny. I don't know how they got past the censors! :) Paul Lynde was the funniest man on TV back in those days. And on Match Game I thought Richard Dawson was some kind of mind reader. Somehow he'd match the contestant's most off-the-wall answers.

@M - I forgot all about Family Feud - the Richard Dawson version. Richard sure did kiss a lot of women on the show.

  32. visitor:

@Kan - Those lines are classic. Hollywood Squares was my favorite.

Also watched Jeopardy...though not anymore. Another one that I liked was the game show where they challenged naming songs with the fewest notes...can't recall the name of the show.

  33. Rodney:

@Matt - Cardsharks - vaguely familiar. The more I say the name, the more familiar is becomes.

    @KAN - Pyramid & Matchgame 75 - good ones!

@sally - We were watching Bette White on Password last night. She couldn't get the word "hickey". After that round, Regis told Bette "let me show you" and proceeded to make like he was giving her a hickey on her neck. When he was done, Bette said to him "The last time a show host did that to me, I ended up marrying him".
And the Let's Make A Deal girl, I always thought her name was Carol-marol.
You got it right sally. You win an MLC memory - The Dog House on Kapahulu Ave.

@ kathi - I don't recall Eye Guess, but I do remember Concentration. Wasn't there something to do with a honeybee? A wild card perhaps? I remember something about a honeybee...

@sally - for someone up at 5:53 in the morning, you sure are up! j/k
In case you didn't see my post in O&E, for insomnia, try Melatonin
    http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/tc/melatonin-overview

@King Katonk - Damn! You know your music! Thanks for answering sally's questions. I would have NEVER been able to google those answers.
Hollywood Squares! I remember that. It was like Tic-Tac-Toe, right? And they actually sat in the cubicle - three squares up!

    @sally -
I try to post at MLC every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I figure that MLCers may not check the blogs daily so I keep mine up for 2 days - so as not to get "buried" so fast. Plus, sometimes we don't remember about something until the next day.
O&E posts almost daily. Something about a post hoar, but I'm not sure. O&E is a bee hive and Shauna is the Queen Bee (QB). The girls there are honey bees while the guys there are bee-bee-dees. It's always buzzing with activity.
WWD posts whenever Braddah Lance feels like it - that, and when he has time. He works in accounting - so you might notice a pattern. Every 4 or 5 weeks, he's pretty much away from WWD. Those are "closing" weeks.
Either that or he has nothing to "monku" about.

@volleymom2 - Tattle Tales was indeed a game show (I had to look it up). Wikipedia said it was based on a show called "He Said, She Said".

@M - yeah, the Newlywed game - so many embarrassing moments:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blATm1sBneM

@Kage - Matchgame - quite a few of you mentioned that game, but I don't recall it. I'd better look it up.

@Ynaku - The Price is Right - Come On Down!
Jokers Wild and Come Face the Devil - one sounds like a video poker machine and the other one sounds like a cult game! How come, Big Island had different TV stations that us?

@RBB - Speaking of people who can't answer simple questions:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3eNuuQdApo

@KAN - Those are too funny. Thanks for sharing them with us!

@Banana Fysh - just for you:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACpNVD5GMUw

@jaydee - I like to watch Jeopardy too. Regular jeopardy is fun. Double Jeopardy makes me feel dumb.

@Kage - re: trip to Hawaii - and the L.A. folks wondering why all the Hawaii people get excited about a trip to Disneyland

@M - Family Fued and Gong Show - good ones!

@zzzzzz - Remote Control - not familiar with it. Is it like a TV Trivia game show? I'm just guessing by the name Remote Control.

  34. 9th Island Girl:

I loved Password, the Pyramid one and Newlywed Game.

Right now I love Password! We watch it every Sunday and during commercials we make up our own passwords and do clues for each other. After awhile, it drives my husband crazy. :)

  35. Ynaku:

Eh Rod no tease heh? Us had channel 9, 11, and 13 CBS, NBC and ABC. Shows was almost 1 week delayed too. Except when we get the satellite feeds than would be like few hours behind.

OH and we had some UHF channels that you had to S L O W L Y turn the knob to fine tune the signal. No forget the rabbit ears. Touch and no move.

  36. JindoMaster808:

@Ynaky - I remember those days, too. Maybe the channels were different on Oahu. 2 (KHON/NBC), 4 (KHVH -> KITV/ABC), 9 (KGMB/CBS), 11 (PBS), 13 (KIKU). UHF reception was always snowy. Alas, with digital transmission, those days have passed.

  37. NKHEA:

How's bout What's My Line or somtin like dat

  38. Rosette:

NO I don't watch tv game shows...THEN I HAVE TO THINK!

  39. NKHEA:

Rememba a few years ago wen had BINGO on local TV channel wit Karen Keawehawaii, you get tickets from da market I tink. Everytime had to stop wateva we waz doing to play  but for nothing neva won anything :(

  40. snow:

visitor - Name That Tune! Some of them could guess the song in so few notes, it was pretty amazing!

"I can name that tune in 5 notes!"
"I can name it in 4!"
    "Name that tune!"

  41. Rodney:

@NKHEA - I remember BINGO, but when had Dave Lancaster and Alice Inoue. One time, after the talk to the winner on the phone, the lady could only speak Chinese. Dave Lancaster had a hard time trying to understand her. Alice took the phone and talked fluent Chinese to the lady.

  42. BananaFysh:

I remember Bingo with Karen and Kimo!

We ate a LOT of KFC when that show was running. ;)

    Never won anything, though. :(

    "B-1 WINNAH!"

"B-4 you call, make sure you cover all the numbers on your card!"

Oh, and don't forget to sing along with them on "O-62!"

  43. Rodney:

@snow - I liked the newlywed game too - only because I wanted to ride in the moving booth. Actually, the game was funny - listening to the different answers. That game wouldn't work today, though. Nowadays, newlyweds have been living together for years! And get couple kids running around.

@unca juncz - No Problem - Vote For Shane before Thursday:
    http://link.mlblists.com/r/VR7NZC/0IH71/EW6XQ5/8ZXVRJ/KECN3I/6C/t?a=partnerId=ed-2715956-89052552%26source=ed-2715956-89052552

@snow - Shauna's here. She wants to know what "whoopie" is.

@JM808 - Paul Lynde was very witty. And quick too.

@visitor - What game was that where you name the songs? I remember them saying "I can name that song in 3 seconds". Then the opponent would say "I can name that song in 2 seconds". MLC moment...
    @snow get um.

  44. BananaFysh:

@Largo -- Shauna doesn't know what "whoopie" is?

    Figures. :|

    What a BEEtard.

  45. NKHEA:

banana; WHAT 8O Shauna no no wat "whoopie is 8O  she must be 40 yr. old v!rg!n ;)

  46. sally:

Did y'all have a good day? I hit the wall about 2pm after having zero sleep last night.

Kan: thanks for finding that HS email, that's the one I was talking about. Cracks me up!

Rodney: what exactly is an MLC Memory and what/where is this Dog House up my street?

  47. BananaFysh:

@NKHEA -- That just feeds into the theory that Shauna was raised in a bubble. ;)

  48. C0hiba:

    Howzit gang!
    @Largo, another great post!

@Kan, thanks for the list. I called a meeting in my office at 9:30 and was reading your post just before the meeting. I was trying to surpress my laughter, especially imagining Paul Lynde and Rose Marie shooting their lines. The two accountants came in looking at me funny (I'm usually pretty sour on Monday mornings).

Do you all think that they were fed the questions before hand on just shot from the hip? (or lip).

@sally, you know, I used to catch a ride, take the bus and walked home from Kaimuki Inter at different times through the 3 years. Can't remember why I didn't take the bus everyday (more MLC memory). Or why we walked home. Was a pretty far walk, would stop at Ruger Market for see moi or soda or icee (not sure if had icee back then). When I go back home, I'm amazed at how far the walk is. Don't remember the bus strike. Used to catch the bus at the corner of 6th ave.

The Dog House was where On On and L&L Drive Inn is. Think that's across Leonard's.

  49. sally:

Another proof of me hopeleslly lolo. I lived on 7th. Walked down to my friend's house on Castle (below Winam). We both walked to our other friend's house on Kapahulu Ave. Then caught the bus at the Date St corner. I guess was easier for me to walk down than them to walk up.

I forget what grade the bus strike was, but it lasted what seemed the whole year and we had no choice but to walk. So the choice to go home was up Kilauea Hill (shortest distance beween 2 points) or around and past Ruger Market) longer route but flatter road. We switched out, depending on how we felt that day.

We were all warned about hitch hiking but one day we couldn't stand it and stuck out our thumbs. OMG my aunty drove by and picked us up! Got lickens when mom came home. Never did that again. Back then, lickens meant business!

  50. David In Oregon:

This is a fun post. I remember watching a lot of game shows:

Wheel of Fortune: I like the Pat Sajak version more than Chuck Woolery one.

Tic Tac Dough: only know (and remember) Wink Martindale as host

Jeopardy: did you know Merv Griffin wrote the musical tune they play during Final Jeopardy?

I also liked the Price Is Right, Family Feud (Richard Dawson hosting), The Dating Game (wasn't Governor Terminator from California a contestant on the show?), Hollywood Squares, The Newlywed Game, The Gong Show (what was that odd dollar amount they gave away as the prize money?) and so many others.

  51. sally:

How come I don't remember the Dog House? I remember Bill's Bakery, home of the most ono Cinammon Bread and Chocolate Cake. Also Lum's Meat place, Rexall Drugs, Akita Store, and Kazekozo movies at Kapahulu Theatre.

oops, sorry Rodney, got off track here. What about What's My Line?

  52. C0hiba:

    @sally, Bill's Bakery! Woah!
The long john's is what I remember. I think the chocolate cake was Dobash. There was a shaved ice store across from the original Bill's.
There was another store Waikiki side of Akita. Think was on Herbert and Campbell. No can remember the name.

Wasn't there an obake house on Castle below Winam?

  53. sally:

Bill's Bakery choc cake was diff from Dobash. It had that solid, almost shell type frosting that I have yet to see anywhere.

The other store you're thinking of is Shihara Store. Now they got Japanese goodies and still got shave ice and still no mo' parking. LOL

Obake house? Not that I recall. The famous one was on Kaimuki and 8th, Mauka / DH corner. That's the one mentioned in Glenn Grant's book.

BTW, Bill's also had killer butter rolls. And a post office to boot!

  54. C0hiba:

Oh yeah, I remember the butter rolls. Butter soaked through the bag.
Shiihara store. Yep. I remember father parking on the corner.

Gotta head home, been one tough Monday. Nice chatting with you.

  55. Syxx:

    1) Jeopardy: I used to kill at that game in school. We would all gather around the dorm tv and try to answer the questions out loud. I hoard useless information.

    2) The Price Is Right!: Everyone loves this one. Plinko was my favorite because the ball made a funny sound as it went down.

    3) Supermarket Sweep: Not that old I guess, but it was fun watching the people run through the aisles trying to fill up their carts with diapers, steaks, and ground coffee.

    4) Scrabble: I used to watch it when I was four and got pretty good at it. After that, I didn't remember seeing it on anymore.

    5) Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?: Okay, not an old show, and not an adult show, but I loved it as a kid because I'm a nerd and geography is cool.

  56. BananaFysh:

@Largo -- Okay, finally got to watch that link.

Yeah! Gene Gene the Dancing Machine rules! :D

OMG, Arte Johnson! Funny seeing the celebrity judges.

Oooh, wasn't a "game show" per se, but remember Battle of the Network Stars? It was so good when the Angels from Charlie's Angels were on! Jaclyn Smith! Va-va-voom! :D

  57. Rodney:

@9th Island Girl - Password - wasn't there a deep voice that would slowly say "The Password is _______" or was that another game show?

@Ynaku - the channels really were 9, 11, and 13? I remember seeing the little blub on the TV listing the different channel numbers for the neighbor islands. So you folks watched Channel 2 news on channel 11?

@JM808 - On the windward side, channel 13 (KIKU) came in clearer on cloudy days. (nah, I'm just making that up).

@Rosette - no need think when you watch TV. That's what the contestants are for.

@Banana Fysh - KFC? Is that where you got your BINGO cards from? Ours was from Times market. Sometimes the cashier would give us a stack of them. Hard to follow so many cards! DVR would've come in real handy back then!

@NKHEA and Banana Fysh - Ho, Queenie going be mad when she visits MLC! (she wasn't actually standing next to me - I made that up).

@sally - did you see my note on Melatonin?

@C0hiba - Right, the Dog House was right across Leonard's. A big paved lot with a small gray cottage sitting right in the middle of it. I think there was a service station on the other side of the lot. You going be in town this weekend?

@David in Oregon - Tic Tac Dough with Wink Martindale. Good one! Who names their kid Wink?

@sally - no problem getting off track. Gives me ideas for future entries.

@Syxx - It's always nice to have a young perspective here. Your comments are always appreciated.

  58. Coconut Willy:

Not sure if it's really a game show but "The Gong Show" Crazy, funny stuff. Chuck Barris was whacked out on cocaine during the whole show. No wonder. It all made sense, to him.

  59. Rodney:

@Banana Fysh - how about Farrah Fawcett on The Dating Game:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEuIlXVtbys

@Coconut Willy - Chuck Barris was a coke fiend? Watching that video of him in the Gene the Dancing Machine clip - I could believe it.

  60. Rod's Big Bro:

    Rod,
Thanks for the links, soooooo funny. Didn't they also have a local show called "Jun Ken Po"?

I don't remember any song about "O-62", but "O-69" is my favorite number, OMG, was that an "O&E" moment?

Speaking of Bills Bakery, I used to date one of his daughters and I neva score any free pastery.

  61. Rod's Big Bro:

@ KAN, love da lines, so funny, gotta save some for my ding-a-ling friends.

  62. Rodney:

btw, when did all these game show play? I mean the time of day. Was it after the morning cartoons and before the soap operas? If so, then what played after the soap operas and before the Checkers & Pogo show?

  63. sally:

Rodney: yes, I did and somewhere I thanked you for it. Maybe on O&E?

Gonna put it on my list. What brand did you buy? Cuz got some funky stuff out there. I don't trust the cheap stuff and can't afford the expensive stuff. Something in the middle. picky picky picky

  64. sally:

RBB: Bills Bakery, wasn't that the ... oh darn I forgot their last name... family. Starts with an N I think. She had brothers named Dennis and Gregg. Gregg played tuba for Royal Hawn Band. He passed away a few years back. We went to church together back when. Used to always see Gregg around but not Dennis since about 6th grade.

  65. sally:

I just bade goodnight to the hive, will do same here. I hope I sleep thru the night.

    Oyasumi...

  66. visitor:

Bill's Bakery & Dog House...wow, I remember those places. Thanks for mentioning. Also recall the aroma of baked bread wafting across Kapahulu from Love's Bakery... And the nice old Japanese lady at Kuhio Cleaners on the corner of Winam/Kapahulu.

  67. visitor:

@ Sally - Greg Shigetani went to Kaimuki and later played for the Royal Hawaiian Band. Unfortunately, he passed away too soon. I didn't know he was connected with Bill's Bakery.

  68. Rod's Big Bro:

@ Sally, Nakamura was the last name and they used to live above Kalani High School.

  69. Rodney:

@sally - The Melatonin we have is Nature Made brand. That's the brand of vitamins I take. Although since CVS bought out Longs, I'm starting to see more CVS brand and less Nature Made :^(

  70. BananaFysh:

@Largo -- No more Times on Maui, so KFC was an easy place to get the bingo cards. I think one of the supermarkets had them too, but I can't recall which one.

  71. Rosette:

@Rosette - no need think when you watch TV. That's what the contestants are for

@ Rodney yes but that is why I would try to beat the darn contestant...! YES i be like okay if I wink once that will be yes answer..omg funny..I be like cheating....!

  78. Rosette:

NEWLY WED HOW ABOUT...MARRIED FOREVER AND STILL DON'T KNOW EACH OTHER.

  79. sally:

@ visitor & RBB: Greg Shigetani, yah that was him. I know he worked at Bills Bakery and always thought his family owned it. That's what my brothers told me. But my brothers also told me that the Natatorium had dead people buried underneath. Gotta love big brothers.

Gregg was one of their classmates. SO... if the owners were Nakamura (and RBB should know right? hahaha) then Greg just worked there.

@Rodney: Thanks again. I took some Awa last night and slept like a baby. I think part of it is being under major duress (spell?). But it's okay, life goes on. Plus, I'm going to God's country on the Hamakua Coast this weekend ... yee ha! can't wait!!!

  80. anklebiters:

    I'mmmmmmmmm baaaaaaaaaack :!:

Had a few family crisis in the past few weeks :-( . All taken care of now.

In regards to Portable Music Players from the previous blog:

Never had a Walkman/Discman until I was on a skiing trip in the mid '90s. One of the girls recorded tracks on a cassette to be played as we skied down the slopes so I had to buy one. Now it's iPod and skis/snowboard.

Now I have an iPod (also use it in my car and run it thru my audio system - no FM transmitters for me, thank you), Blackberry (listen to songs and watch music videos on the plane), XM radio which I listen to at work/home/car, the music channels on satellite tv and cable, YouTube, AOL Music, and Myspace music channels.

As for today's game shows - I rarely rarely watch any today. I remember one game show that was broadcasted from Hawaii, out in Kuulima if I remember...something like the Diamondhead Game....with floating bills in a glass chamber.

I do remember when MTV really did play music videos and one particular game - Remote Control hosted by Ken Ober and featured Colin Quinn...and one Kari Wührer :!: That game really sucked but the view was nice  Also Nina Blackwood, Martha Quinn, JJ Jackons, Alan Hunter and Mark Goodman were VJs on MTV....a really great venue to listen/watch new songs being introduced....MJ's Thriller, Dire StraitsI Want My MTV (Money for nothing). Did you know that MTV.com was born before the popularity of the WWW :?: You had to use Gopher but that's another story for a future topic.

  81. sally:

@anklez: MTV was before www? Really? wow

One time I was watching MTV in a bar w/ my friend and I told him "that singer really looks like Meryl Streep" and he said "stoopid, dats Boy George".

    hahahahahaha! bucks fo' lolo

  82. anklebiters:

    sally:

Yep, MTV started life on 8/1/81....the MTV.com domain name was registered around 1993 by one of the VJ's, Adam Curry, of the Headbangers Ball series.....WWW came years later.

  83. ducksinthewind:

Kan, and Sally omgawsh you have had me laughing.
by the doghouse and Leonards, there was a hippie taxi stand too. sun bums or weedie's.

Snow and Bananafysh, I think the newlywed game was the first place i heard something about whipped cream and handcuffs! i was about 10, and just thought, "why are people howling with laughter?"

It must have been something everyone liked! Felt like sherlock holmes though, trying to figure out the great unexplained world.

I liked the creepy costumes and Xtreme sucking up on Lets Make A Deal, and Monty was not obnoxious, usually. I really would have liked the jeopardy type brain games, except asking that stuff back-a$$-wards in a question still ticks me off.

We liked this mom and pop restaurant all the way over on the west side, and the whole place would play along with Wheel every night. That was homey and fun.

the Squares must have been a spoof of the game show fix scandals: questions (i figure) were submitted to comedians weeks in advance, and their writers must have helped them with responses. Kan, thanks for the laughs~!

Ankles, I am glad you got through the mullygrubbles.

  84. JindoMaster808:

@Rodney - I think the game shows were on in the early morning. Then the soaps started up late morning. At least that's what I recall from the early 80's. I'd program the VCR to record at that time and JindoMissus808 and I would watch in the evening. Of course that was before we had kids. I remember recording a show called "Split Second."

@anklebiters - Boy you're good. I forgot all about the Diamond Head game. Someone posted a video of the introduction on YouTube...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlJ5s1Zn3F8

  85. JindoMaster808:

@David in Oregon - You were right about the Governator being on The Dating Game back in 1973. Here's the YouTube link:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCH3w_LnmHE

  86. opso:

didn't/don't watch too much game shows. but i do recall most of these shows y'all mentioned.

what i reeeally liked was all the games that were played on Checkers & Pogo show. man! i was so J of all da Honolulu keeds that could go on da show. :x

the donut eating on a string, whipped cream pie with cookie, eat soda cracker then whistle, bobbing for apples, etc.

but when the merry un-birthday keed got to grab all them pennies! zomg! jackpot!

  87. sally:

Wow, long lull in the comments. Hey Rodney, I passed on a "hello" from someone that works with you.

opso: yah, I often imagined how many pennies I could scoop up! What a fantasy huh?

I also waited so patiently for the day Miss Robin would see me in her mirror, but she never called out my name. I got to meet her a few years ago and told her so and she held up her imaginary mirror and said " and I see ____" My life is now complete. LOL

Ho, you guys thought I was going blurt out my name eh?

  88. Charlotte Lawrence:

I just finished watching Game Show Network, and a contestant was on Match Game that I recognized as Jacklyn Smith. She was smiling so much so as to be noticed, you couldn't miss it. I recognized her right away.

  89. Rodney:

Aloha Charlotte Lawrence and welcome to the Midlife Crisis blog! Jacklyn Smith still the looker, eh? I'm happy to hear she's still in the public limelight.
    Thanks for posting, Charlotte!
