Friday5 - Dairy

June 19th, 2009 by Rodney Lee

Pretty good Friday5.org questionire this week so I'll go with it.  Topic: Dairy

  1. What are your feelings about milk?
  2. What are your feelings about cheese?
  3. What are your feelings about yogurt?
  4. How do you feel about soy milk?
  5. How far are you from the nearest cow?

Again, feel free to cut and paste the questions and answer them.  Or just answer them without the questions.

Here's my answers:

  1. What are your feelings about milk?
Growing up, I drank milk only when I was told to - like with our school lunch.  Then one day, I was at a friends house (losthawaiian) and during a break from playing, he went in to get something to drink.  It was milk.  I was shocked!  "You drink milk when you don't have to?!" And his reply was "Yeah, I like milk".  I thought that was pretty cool (to like milk) so from then on, I started drinking milk every night for dinner.  Thanks losthawaiian!
Somewhere in my early 30's, I became lactose intolerant.  Not so much with ice cream, mostly with milk and rich cream sauces.  If I'm constipated, a glass of milk or a plate of alfedo sauce will cure me.  Instantly.
So now since I can't drink milk, I get my daily allowance of calcium by taking Citracal.  Recommended by Dr. Laura.
  2. What are your feelings about cheese?
Hated it.  Now I like it.  Growing up, only my dad ate cheese and it was cheddar.  I thought that was the only kind of cheese there was.  Then I was introduced to pizza.  Mmmm, what's this white cheese?  I like white cheese.  Then as I got older, I ate different types of cheese and found that I like cheese.  But I still don't care much for cheddar.
  3. What are your feelings about yogurt?
Never acquired the taste for it.  Tried a few times, but NCH (No Can Handle).  Too sour tasting for me.  Even if I pretend it's ice cream, nope.
  4. How do you feel about soy milk?
After I found out that lattes go right through me, I tried them with soy milk.  Meh.  Didn't really care for it.  But I'm willing to try it again.  Someday.
  5. How far are you from the nearest cow?
He, he.  Could have fun with this question, but I won't.  I'd say the nearest cow to be would be the one standing in front of Foremost over by OCCC (across Marukai).  Say, isn't that Lani Moo?  Is she still there?  Is Foremost still there?  Do you folks know the cow I'm talking about?  She's black and white and always stands in the same position.

Post you answers.  And I'll leave you with this Milk and Cereal video:

  1. jaydee:

    1. Drank milk all the time when small kid. Now just for breakfast in the morning.

    2. Love Cheddar, Swiss, Montery Jack and String (I think this is Mozzarella.

    3. Vanilla and Lemon yogurt.

    4. Blechhhh!!!

    5. Not too many cows near me, living ones anyway. The closest one would have to be in Norco, about 30 miles from where I live.

  2. losthawaiian:

What are your feelings about milk?
I love milk. I can't drink too much regular milk and lowfat milk tastes like water with milk added.

What are your feelings about cheese?
I'll eat any type of cheese, even the stinky ones!

What are your feelings about yogurt?
I can eat it, but it doesn't do anything for me. Now frozen yogurt is a different story.

How do you feel about soy milk?
I have never acquired a taste for it unless it's chocolate milk.

How far are you from the nearest cow?
About two miles away from me is a small dairy farm and in the area are a lot of dairy farms. Jaydee, most of the farms that used to be in the Norco area have moved up here to the High desert.

  3. jaydee:

    @ losthawaiian:
You're right! I just remembered that I golfed at Goose Creek a few months ago and the dairy farm that was right next to it was closed up. I just figuered they moved someplace else in Norco. That course, Goose Creek was always one of my favorites but the smell and the flies from the dairy farm made it almost unbearable!

  4. Matt:

What are your feelings about milk?
straight, not a huge fan. love the things you can do with milk, though (ice cream, bolonese sauce, etc)

What are your feelings about cheese?
good cheese is incredible. even bad cheese can be great (melt some velveeta in a bowl of salsa, throw in some jalapenos and grab the chips)

What are your feelings about yogurt?
    my son loves it.

How do you feel about soy milk?
    that's not milk

How far are you from the nearest cow?
growing up in Kahaluu, it was about fifty feet. now...unless the San Mateo County Fair is in town (about a mile), it's over twenty five miles.

  5. KAN:

What are your feelings about milk? I like milk, but it doesn't like me. I remember drinking Ditto as a little kid (I think it was "imitation milk").

What are your feelings about cheese? I luuuuurrrrrve cheese, just about any kind. But I have trouble processing fresh cheeses (feta and goat cheese especially) and I'm developing an allergy in midlife to blue cheese (dang! I love blue cheese! The bluer the better!)

What are your feelings about yogurt? I like yogurt. I got some as part of an in-flight breakfast about 15 years ago and tried it for the first time. I've been eating it ever since. Got some in my 'fridge right now.

How do you feel about soy milk? I like it, but studies are inconclusive about the weird hormonal effects it may have on middle-aged women, so I stopped drinking it on a regular basis. I use almond milk now on my cereal. If I get a soy latte, I ask for it without foam - soy milk foam tastes yukky to me.

How far are you from the nearest cow? Depends on what you mean by "cow" - I love cows and I have a stuffed one that moos less than a foot away from me at my desk at work, with a total 6 cows at the office. I have a ton more at home. (No, I don't need any more.)

  6. anklebiters:

    1. What are your feelings about milk?

Got Milk :!: Had to drink it every single day for snack and lunch during school. Now, I rarely drink it. If I buy a gallon jug, it spoils before it half empty.

    2. What are your feelings about cheese?

I hate any kind of cheese, except on pizzas and cheese puffs. No cheese for me on spaghetti, chili dogs, hamburgers, or sandwiches.

    3. What are your feelings about yogurt?

    It's edible....not a fan of it thou.

    4. How do you feel about soy milk?

Never had any, any relations to Soylent Green :?:

    5. How far are you from the nearest cow?

There are several dairies in Chandler....but I am far away from them so the smell is non-existent. The city is build on farm land. When I first moved here, there was nothing but farmland - cotton, corn, chives - now strip malls and subdivisions. There's also a chicken farm for eggs too !!

  7. hanapaa:

  11. Kelli:

Good morning, Uncle Rodney! It was nice seeing you yesterday. Perhaps I'll be bumping into you and more Advertiser people nowadays.

    1. What are your feelings about milk? It's good with cereal and cookies!

    2. What are your feelings about cheese? It's ok, but I don't eat it that often. I can go without it in a sandwich. I love the fried cheese at Kohnotori, though. Mmmm!

    3. What are your feelings about yogurt? I love Yogurtland and Menchie's. Sweets are my weakness.

    4. How do you feel about soy milk? I used to drink soy milk, but it's expensive. I would consider going back to it, though. I'm not lactose intolerant, so I'm ok with regular milk, too.

    5. How far are you from the nearest cow? That's a good question. I don't know!

  12. NKHEA:

    Morin everybody :)

Gatta run today, will check back afta to answer da questions.

    NKHEA....actually goin work

  13. Rod's Big Bro:

    Hi Rod,
    Happy Friday, here's my responses.
1.What are your feelings about milk? I loved milk and even used to take it in a cooler when I went surfing. But like you after 20, milk became a laxative for me. So can't drink it any more.

2.What are your feelings about cheese? Love cheese, all types and use fetta on my salads and even add it to home made nachos (chips, refried beans, chicken, olives, fetta, 4 mexican cheese) layered as listed, and nuke for 60-90 seconds, with a salad, dinner in about 10 minutes.

3.What are your feelings about yogurt? Love yogurt also but has a tendency to add a strong aroma to my bowel movements (I know "TMI"), but helps the digestive system.

4.How do you feel about soy milk? It's like skim milk, lacks the body of whole milk, so I get my calcium from brocholi which contains more calcium than milk.

5.How far are you from the nearest cow? Less than a mile on Hamakua drive, in a pasture across the stream from Good Earth store.

So if you want the goodness of milk without the complications, eat broccoli for calcium, and sun for the vitamin "D".

  14. Rod's Big Bro:

    An addenum to above message:

This will drive everyone nuts now, "You can't go thru a day without seeing either a cow or black and white cow coloring". After I read that it got to the point I started to get pissed off knowing about that and how it shows up.

Hee, hee have a good day and try to ignore what I just told you, good luck.

  15. Rod's Big Bro:

@ anklebiters, read ur post from yestrday another idea could be "L7" instead of "Quad", that way you would know the true MLCr's vice da posers.

  16. Kage:

    Good morning.

Love milk always have. Especially with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Milk is also a requirement if I am eating pancakes....mmmmm.

Love cheese too. Probably should not eat as much as I do. I always have some in my fridge. I like all kinds of cheeses and willing to try. Stinky cheeses are not on my OOOHH list, but willing to try if I am not paying for it. hehe.

Yogurt is a good substitute for me when I want ice cream. It subdues the cravings.

    Soy milk, ppppbbbtttth!! nuff said.

Do we have cows on Oahu?

  17. Ocean Lover:

    1. What are your feelings about milk?
As a kid I loved putting Nestle's Quik, either chocolate or strawberry in it. Haven't drunk milk in the last 20+ years I think.

    2. What are your feelings about cheese?
Depends on who cut it. ;-)

    3. What are your feelings about yogurt?
The type you described (sour kind) I agree with you. The "Menchie's", "Yogurtland", "Orange Tree" types that are the rage now.....are good.

    4. How do you feel about soy milk?
Never drank the stuff. The wife drinks it and to me it looks like the rice water after you've washed it..........YEEEEUCK!

    5. How far are you from the nearest cow?
If the "mochiballs" across the hall "moo'ed"...........about 30 feet.

    OL

  18. kathi:

    1. What are your feelings about milk? Ick. I don't drink it. If it's in an alternate form such as ice cream, or if it's to be used in cooking, that's different, and that's fine.

    2. What are your feelings about cheese? Cheese is a wonderful thing and with so many varieties it never gets boring.

    3. What are your feelings about yogurt? I like yogurt and eat it all the time in the summer, not so much in the winter.

    4. How do you feel about soy milk? I couldn't drink cow's milk when I was a baby, but that's the last time I drank soy milk. I have no memories of what it tastes like, nor do I have any desire to try the 21st century version!

    5. How far are you from the nearest cow? Hmmm. I'm in Illinois, but right now I'm in downtown Chicago. So the nearest cow is probably at the Farm in the Zoo at Lincoln Park Zoo, about 2 miles away.

  19. jaydee:

    @ j-uncz:
Ho, you change your handle every day yeah? :)
Hard to keep up with you brah!

Glad your son liked the car and no worries about the lunch, was my pleasure.

  20. jaydee:

    j-uncz:
And thanks for the Filipino desserts! Was ono!

  21. BananaFysh:

    1. What are your feelings about milk?
I used to drink it when I was younger. It was okay. I remember when school lunches switched from whole milk to 2%, and thinking the 2% tasted gross.

Now I can't drink any milk unless I want to run to the bathroom.

    2. What are your feelings about cheese?
I LURVE cheese! :D Any kine, stinky kine too. But not the stinky cheese that OL cut.

    3. What are your feelings about yogurt?
I like yogurt. The kine get nowdays like Yoplait taste good.
The old kine where you had to stir um wasn't so good. bleah.

    4. How do you feel about soy milk?
If I have a latte or cappuccino, it's a must have. Regular milk will go right through me. Even non-fat will give me "distress."

I don't care for it plain. Too sweet or something. I guess I'm not accustomed to the taste.

One time my mom made chowder with either rice milk or soy milk. Oh man, that was NASTY. It was way to sweet. Was almost like a dessert.

    5. How far are you from the nearest cow?
I don't even want to know.

As long as that buggah no wind up on the hood of my car again, I no care.

  22. NKHEA:

What are your feelings about milk?
Only with cereal, neva waz a milk drinker :)

What are your feelings about cheese?
    Only in burgers ;)

What are your feelings about yogurt?
    When in da moooooood :D

How do you feel about soy milk?
Neva tried it, and probably neva will :?

How far are you from the nearest cow?
    Right......think I shouldn't answer dis one 8O

    NKHEA....goin be moooooin along now

  23. snow:

What are your feelings about milk? i used to love milk, especially with nestle's quik or ovaltine. or maybe should say i loved nestle's quik and ovaltine, which i had with some milk??? now, i like milk and drink skim milk every day... in fact, i had a glass of milk last night! i normally don't do that... i must have known you'd ask us about milk today!

What are your feelings about cheese? i like cheese but, besides processed cheese slices for cheese sandwiches and parmesan for pasta, i don't have any at home.

What are your feelings about yogurt? i used to love yogurt with the fruit on the bottom but it got to be too sweet. then, for a while, i ate yogurt twice a day and made myself sick of it. now, i still like it but can't even think of eating it. does that make any sense?

How do you feel about soy milk? i haven't found any that i like and it also makes me congested. blech.

How far are you from the nearest cow? about three feet... i have a stuffed cow on my desk!

  24. snow:

happy father's day rodney and all you MLC father's out there! :)

  25. Coconut Willy:

Milk so expensive! My son only drinks milk or water. Go through at least 2 gallons a week. We drink the non fat (skim) which took some getting used to.

    Cheese? Yum

Yogurt? Natural, kinda sour. Yoplait, pretty good. Yami, yummy. Frozen yogurt shops, good stuff.

    Soy? flavored Silk is okay.

Cows? I think that Foremost cow was sold when they went under. I should have invested in a cow when my son was born. Would have saved a lot of money.

  26. opso:

What are your feelings about milk?
hardly drink milk ever since i grad from high school (school lunch). i liked it when mixed with Nestles Quik, or hot cocoa with some cracked Saloon Pilot in a bowl.
once in a blue moon when i get a craving for Cap'n Crunch......i buy a small carton of whole milk. other than that......nada

What are your feelings about cheese?
it's okay.....i wouldn't say i love cheese. just to compliment certain foods......like in pizza, sandwiches, cheeseburgers etc.

What are your feelings about yogurt?
meh......but i can eat the new kine fro-yos.

hey......no mo one question bout cream ice?! ;)

How do you feel about soy milk?
    i don't think i even tried it.

How far are you from the nearest cow?
    i have no freakin idea!

  27. Rosette:

What are your feelings about milk?
I DRINK MILK JUST IN CASE MY STOMACH ACT UP AT LEAST I AM HOME...I USUALLY HAVE PROBLEMS BUT I FIND IF I DRINK A SMALL AMOUNT THEN GO TO SLEEP IT DOESN"T BOTHER ME ..MY TUMMY IS SLEEPING BY THEN.

What are your feelings about cheese?
    I LOVE CHEESE

What are your feelings about yogurt?
I LOVE BLUE BERRY YOGURT..I FIND WHEN THE MILK DIDN'T AGREE WITH ME I ATE YOGURT THEN FOR SOME REASON I AM NOT AS LACTOSE INTORELANCE..I DRINK LITTLE BIT OF MILK THEN INCREASE IT AT NIGHT THEN GO TO SLEEP.

How do you feel about soy milk?
NOT TOO CRAZY ABOUT SOY ....I think it can change your hormone .

How far are you from the nearest cow?

  28. Rosette:

MY BOYS LOVE TO DRINK MILK.

  29. Shauna:

    1. What are your feelings about milk? I always try to have skim milk in my refrigerator at home. Also try to drink at least one glass a day...

    2. What are your feelings about cheese? VERY VERY picky on it. I only eat it with certain foods and only like the very common ones. Could never do the cheese and wine thing.

    3. What are your feelings about yogurt? Wouldn't even consider trying those Yoplait ones but love the fro-yo shops. The tart flavors are my favorite! :D

    4. How do you feel about soy milk? Never tried it and probably never will.

    5. How far are you from the nearest cow? Since I live in town, I would say miles and miles?? ;)

  30. ducksinthewind:

What are your feelings about milk? love it, and gimme that whole milk with all the yummy left in. When i got to minnesota (where they are justifiably proud) the milk was ono, tasted like dessert, and at their food prices, i was giggling in the checkout line.

What are your feelings about cheese? love it too. i got to live in europe for awhile, and boy they got it going on. now i love almost all the expensive cheeses, like gruilliere, ementhaller, cant think of that first rate cheddary one from england, feta from greece, one extra-hard extra-old romano. there are a couple of decent cheeses here that we can afford at all, but i always like to have some in the house. a california lady brought back (to hawaii) some mexican cheese once, and made soup with it... first rate! but she said not to nosh it, cause that was not pasterized and we might get bovine TB .

What are your feelings about yogurt? i still like it from hippie days, when we learned to make our own. my Haole Boy hates it, yech.

How do you feel about soy milk? now that is yech.

How far are you from the nearest cow? not too far, there is a big ol' dairy near us (ok Ankles can bust me on that fib, about 50 miles) in Florence.

Matt: i thought Bolognese was red, and Alfredo was cheesy. I rather have anything Florentine, anyway... with spinach!

Kan: i forgot about ditto! it was nassssty. what's almond milk? i like anything made out of almonds

Kathi: dont forget in Chicago, you are never very far from the "lots" and slaughterhouses! prolly not what Rodney meant, that would be the rare-well-done debate blog.

  31. NKHEA:

Shauna; what you not picky about

Plus, close to your house so if need be, people can just go sleep over your house, right?

  34. NKHEA:

NKHEA....betta check wit the dogs first

  35. Mike in Waipio:

    1. Through high school, drank milk with school lunch and at home (because Mom said so). OK when chocolate-flavored. When older, drank milk with ice cubes (didn't mind the dilution; just liked it cold). Rarely drink milk any more.
    2. Like mozzarella (especially pizza and mozzarella sticks). Will eat different cheeses in some sandwiches (like cheeseburger). Also with pasta dishes.
    3. Yogurt's OK. Frozen yogurt better.
    4. My wife buys soy milk for her cereal. I use some to make pudding (can't taste the soy milk; only the pudding flavor).
    5. Don't know; probably no closer than five miles.

  40. j-uncz:

ducks, you wen remind me, the Jardines Matheson HQ building in HK has more than one descriptor, as good as the Hong Kongers are wit' des-crip-tors..

they alternately call this one "Ementhal Building" or "Land of 1000 As-ho's"..

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/34/HK_Central_Jardine_House_C1.JPG

as you'll remember, in Clavells' HK novels Tai-Pan and Noble House, Jardines is portrayed as Struan's..

ack-chally looks more like as-ho's den swiss cheese..

  41. sally:

Milk: Love it, but it has to be non fat. Can't stand the creamy stuff.
Cheese: Love it. It should be its own food group.
Yogurt: Always got my stash of Lucerne non fat yogurt to put on fruits or just eat for snack.
Soy Milk: Always have on hand to use in my oatmeal or for cooking. But I won't drink it straight.
Cow: Where's the nearest cow from Kapahulu?
I remember going to my daddy's friend's house in Kuliouou and the other side of his back fence was the Wilson Farm. As in Wilson Market. I used to watch the cows from there.

  42. kuya.d:

    1) milk milk: only when I eat school lunch at work, get chocolate, sometimes get strawberry, and had root beer flavored kine once in awhile.

    2) cheese: string cheese is winnahs.

    3) soy milk: love Silk brand chocolate or vanilla.

    4) cow: right down the street. Dats how on the edges of Hilo.

  43. KAN:

Off topic with Rodney: I'm a pony. I was almost a lamb or a groundhog. I'm least like a puppy or a duck.

  44. wendyslilsis:

1.What are your feelings about milk? loved it as a kid, drank it w/ every meal. now it gives me gas. yah, i know, tmi.
2.What are your feelings about cheese? hated it as a kid, american cheese especially smelled bad to me. now, i still don't like american cheese but i like just about every other kind.
3.What are your feelings about yogurt? as a kid, bleh. yogurt has come a long way since then. there are so many different brands and varieties i had to keep trying them until i found one i really like - yoplait vanilla.
4.How do you feel about soy milk? never tried it, but never heard anyone say they love it so i steer clear.
5.How far are you from the nearest cow? down the street, austin, texas. the guy down the street owns all this pastureland and his name for real is bob barker. not THE bob barker though.

    You Are A: Pony!

Who doesn't love a pony? You are one of these miniature horses, renown for your beauty and desired by many. Full of grace, you are a beautiful and very special animal, full of strength and majesty.

You were almost a: Bunny or a Puppy
You are least like a: Kitten or a Monkey

I wonder about the acuracy of this quiz.

  46. Matt:

    @Ducks
the milk is added to the meat as it simmers. keeps it very tender. the theory is that the addition of the milk protects the meat from the acids in the wine that is added (and reduced to nothing) later in the process. without it, the acid sort of cures the meat and makes it tough. very long process to make a bolonese from scratch, but well worth it.

  47. Rod's Big Bro:

    Hey Rod,
Remember when mom used to make us Carnation powdered milk?? And then we had the powdered Nestle Quik and used to make chocolate sauce and just eat it like that?? Maybe you can take the Carnation Powedered milk and not have to worry about da cramps and stuff, if they still sell the stuff.

  48. Rod's Big Bro:

    Hey Rod,
It's Pony time, almost a monkey and not quite a chipmunk, okay so; "Hey now, Hey now, It's pony time, boogey boogey shoo", ala Chubby Checker.

You Are A: pony "Who doesn't love a pony? You are one of these miniature horses, renown for your beauty and desired by many. Full of grace, you are a beautiful and very special animal, full of strength and majesty

Does that mean I have to stop saying "hey" since it's the first stage of horse kaka??

  49. Rod's Big Bro:

Oh, btw, Happy Fathers Day to all of you out there.

And wat is everyone sleeping or am I the only one home?? WWD??

  50. Rod's Big Bro:

  55. Matt:

    @ ducks
the milk thing is for sauces with ground meat (lots of surface area to coat with the milk or something). if you have a piece of shoe leather to soften up in the slow cooker, try this:

brown meat in another pan. remove to slow cooker. add a little more oil and add in garlic, onions, some thyme (fresh). add half a bottle of a big red wine (for beef...basically, something you'd drink with that type of meat) and let the alcohol come off (reduce by about 1/3 and that'll do it). that seems to cut the sharp taste you get if you just add the wine straight. pour this over the meat in the SC. cover the meat with beef broth (if it's lamb, I use chicken broth). turn it on and let it do its thing.
can also add carrots, celery, whatever before you slow cook it.
after pau, remove the meat and stuff and pour the liquid into a wide, shallow pan or pot. defat that sucker by skimming, or, if you're lazy like me, put the pan in a cooler full of ice or the ice box for a couple of hours, then remove the disk of solidified fat that hardens at the top. put the pan back on the fire and reduce it by about 1/3-1/2. if it's too salty after reducing, add some water. when it's just a touch too salty ( I like it salty), add a tbsp of butter and let it melt in. put the meat and stuff back in to warm up then grind!

  56. ducksinthewind:

thanks, Matt: then make rice, got it!

  57. volleymom2:

I thought I would be the last one answering, but I'm not- lol! Was too sick yesterday.

What are your feelings about milk?
I love, love milk - used to be called the milk baby.
What are your feelings about cheese?
    I love, love cheese.
What are your feelings about yogurt?
    I love, love yogurt.
How do you feel about soy milk?
    That I don't like.
How far are you from the nearest cow?
Far, far away. If any of you are on the border of Bellingham and Vancouver, go to Ed and Aileens Dairy- all their milk products are so cheap because their dairy is right there. The ice cream cones are a bargain! The shakes are ono!

  58. sally:

If you ever take the drive from Vegas>LA, there's a little restaurant in Baker ... the one with the world's tallest thermometer... and they have the world's most ono strawberry milkshake. Or maybe just seemed that way cuz the thermometer read 112 degrees! LOL And it was locust season to boot! ew ew ew!

  59. Kevin:

What are your feelings about milk?
I am a closet milk-o-holic. I love milk, always have, and I remember when Hawaii used to have Meadow Gold, Foremost, Ditto, plus the mainland brands. Now I just buy the mainland variety. When I moved back to Hawaii from the mainland, I was shocked by how much milk costs in Hawaii. Now I'm used to it. It is what it is. I'm not going to give it up, even though I've read in some health publications that cow milk is not good for adults. Maybe I'll just cut down. But I rarely drink milk in public. If I were at someone's house and they asked, "What would you like to drink?" I wouldn't say, "Do you have any milk?" (Oh, by the way, I don't think Ditto was real milk. Not sure what that was made of. Does anyone know?)

What are your feelings about cheese?
Cheese is awesome. I like almost any cheese. When I was growing up in Hawaii, we only ate Kraft cheese slices for sandwiches. Sometimes we'd eat it by itself, just peel off the plastic wrapper and grind. Later I discovered there's so many different kinds of cheese and thought, wow, what was I missing all these years? On the mainland I was introduced to fresh goat cheese. You can eat that with grilled bell peppers, olive oil, salt ... so good.

What are your feelings about yogurt?
I eat it and like it but it's not high on my list of things to shop for. If I don't eat yogurt for months I don't miss it. Yogurt can be healthy but then most commercial brands are full of sugar and junk. I know someone who makes her own. I would like to try except I'm afraid I'll make a mistake and poison myself and my family.

How do you feel about soy milk?
I used to hate soy milk. I would gag after drinking it. But I learned that different brands taste different. So after I found a brand I like, I started to drink it more. I don't know if we should mention brands (I'm not trying to advertise it), but there used to be only one brand of soy milk that I'd drink. It's the only one I could tolerate. Some of the other ones that don't taste good by itself will taste okay if you pour it on cereal or oatmeal. Like many foods and beverages, it takes getting used to.

How far are you from the nearest cow?
I live in Kaneohe. There's gotta be cows somewhere in Kahaluu or even nearer. For those of you who remember Kaneohe from 30 something years ago, there used to be where Windward Mall stands today -- that used to be all bush before, with the Catholic graveyard in the middle. (The graveyard is still there, enclosed by a fence in the parking lot.) You could hear and smell the cows. I never went inside because I think it was private property and I heard there was a cemetery in there. Every year, St. Ann School would have a carnival, and part of the carnival was an area where they would try to get people to adopt/buy live animals. One year, they had a small cow probably donated by one of the parishioners, and they were having trouble selling it. An old Catholic nun (Maryknoll sister) was in charge of the animal corner, and we knew her. She tried to convince my mom to buy the cow; I think she was desperate and almost ready to give it to us for free. Now we don't live on a farm. We live in the suburbs, near the school, close enough that we could have walked the cow back to our house. My mom actually considered it because the nun was so persuasive and desperate to get the cow off her hands. My mom used the pay phone to call my dad -- I think there was a pay phone near the main office -- and he said NO. We didn't even have a fence around our property at the time, and we had a regular house in a neighborhood, I'm not even sure it was legal to keep a cow there. So we never got the cow. But I remember hoping for those few minutes we'd be able to take the cow home (it was a black and white one). This was probably about 35 years ago or more. I still remember it.

  60. Rodney:

    Thanks for posting everyone.

And welcome to a couple of new posters:

@wendyslilsis - thanks for you reply! Yes, milk and gas seem to go hand in hand for some of us. I heard that the yoplait drink causes gas too. Bob Barker the farmer - too funny!

@Kevin - I'm still learning about different cheeses too. At Subway when they ask for what kind of cheese, I don't know which to choose. So many varieties out there yet to be explored.

As for soy milk, KAN mentioned Almond milk. That sounds good, as I like almonds. Is there such a thing as cashew milk? I love cashews.
