Tribute to Wayne Harada Pictorial
February 23rd, 2009 by Rodney LeeWhat a tribute it was! A lot of big name entertainers - a lot that I've heard and known of for years, but never got a chance to see perform. That is until today. So let's get started with the pictures.

Al Waterson - MC This guy is funny!
Augie T.

Honolulu Boy Choir

Honolulu Theater for Youth doing Rap's Room Service skit

Tony Young - Manoa Valley Theater

Karen Keawehawaii and Cha Thompson

Taimane Gardner - this girl can play!

The Brothers Cazimero

The Society of Seven Las Vegas (the 7th guy is behind the drums)
Apologies to Augie T. as I didn't get any pictures of his performance. If anyone has a picture of Augie's performance and would be willing to email it to me, I'll post it.
This was one big blast. Over 3 and a 1/2 hours of non-stop entertainment. And they all volunteered their time for this Tribute to Wayne Harada. And to top it off, all the funds will benefit Helping Hands Hawaii and The Honolulu Advertiser Christmas Fund, including the generous gifts of $5,000 going to each fund from the Great Aloha Run. It was definitely a win-win situation all around.
But most of all, it was one heck of a retirement party for Wayne Harada.
Update: Kathy Boast has generously allow me to link to her pictures. See them here at:

And props to Leslie Kawamoto of Island Tails blog who not only handled all the ticket sales for this event, but managed to not let her blog skip a beat.
Way To Go Leslie!

What a stellar lineup! Congrats to everyone - I wish I could've been there.
February 23rd, 2009 at 6:33 am
A star performance for a star reporter.
Oh wow, choke entertainers. I remember when the Crush was just a small group testing the waters in Hilo. Went to their concert at the Crown Room Naniloa before their mainstream debut. Good to see them playing together.

WOW! what a line up of entertainers!

Nice job on the photos Rod! Thanks for sharing, except the Tony Young one.
February 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 am
Rodney, you must have had great seats or you have a great camera with zoom lens. Great shots, except for that one shot.
February 23rd, 2009 at 10:19 am
What a day of entertainment! No wonder Ken Makuakane wasn't down at the tennis courts kicking our butts! He was serving up music instead of aces!
WINNAH!

Aloha All, What an outstanding collection of images and this star studded occasion. Wish I could have been in attendance to see everyone in action, what a treat! Wayne is a wonderful individual and has been helpful in the development of my Fan Appreciation website for Danny Couch. Always willing to help with input and comments. For that I thank you Wayne, it's been a pleasure to get to meet you and hear your stories of some of the most spectacular music events and artists ever to perform in Hawaii. Your support to them is obviously appreciated. Fair winds and following seas... and much happiness.
Always Aloha, Lea

Rod-san:
You rock. Thanks for coming. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for being a great colleague from The Advertiser team.
Yes, it was a spectacle — and you have the shots that show 'em all.
Mahalo plenty. Again.
February 23rd, 2009 at 4:54 pm
@Wayne Harada - Thank you for your reply. It was a blast! People were talking about it all day here at the news building. As I put it - it's like when you don't know what to order as an entree and you're offered a sampler platter of the best of everything on the menu. Including the desserts!
So much outpouring of love and aloha for you. I knew it was going to be a not-to-be-missed event and I'm glad Paula and I were able to be a part of it.
February 23rd, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Largo,
Great pictures, looks like it was a fun event. Thanks for sharing.
The caption under the picture of Krush states "original" is that Hal Bradbury singing? Was Bobby Gonzales there too? I can only recognize Ed Ramones.
Ken Makuakane (half Mango) still playing tennis? Geez, that buggah is old... he's my age. Must be in top shape. Is he living in Hilo or Honolulu?

Reader Kathy Boast has generously allow me to link to her album of pictures she took at the Tribute to Wayne Harada. See them here.

*I've added the link at an update at the end of my entry also.
February 23rd, 2009 at 9:34 pm
dang!.....what a star studded line-up!
nice pix Largo! you captured some great shots. what......you was front row or sumptin?
oh yeah......Taimane rocks!
sounds like it was a fabulous night.......and great tribute to Mr. Harada.
February 23rd, 2009 at 11:05 pm
Yup, and they're still cranking out the entertainment. Now, that's energy!
I was hoping maybe someone video taped the show - for a future DVD?
** fingers crossed **
Now you're showing your age.
See you soon!
All for $30! And all to charity! But mostly - to be there at one of the biggest retirement parties ever!
About 15 rows up, shooting a Canon XTi with a 70-300 Image Stabilization lens. Don't tell Paula, but the lens actually cost more than the camera - and the lens was second hand.
Welcome to Midlife Crisis, Thomas. Thanks for posting. His music was aces!
And thank you too for posting Lea. Welcome to the MLC blog. Can you guess what song Danny performed? I'll just say "chicken skin".
Like Lee Cataluna's "You Somebody?" play, once you make it to Wayne's column, consider yourself Haradafied.
And I didn't even touch up the photos!
And you, Leslie - been busting your butt for over a month coordinating the ads, the printing of the tickets, the collection of payments, the distribution of tickets, and still you managed to keep up with your work and your blog! You went WAY beyond the call of duty. But then again, how often do you get to contribute to an icon such as Wayne Harada? Way To Go, Leslie. Way To Go!
Working with celebrities does have it's perks. You keep plugging away at school Kelli-girl. Maybe someday, you'll get to be as big as Wayne.
No, Mahalo to you Wayne for allowing all of us to share in your retirement party. And making sure that the cost remained reasonable and that all profits go to charity. You are a class act! Thank you.
Ai, C0hiba - why you ask this kine hard questions? As far as I know, that was indeed Hal Bradbury and Bobby Gonzales. In fact, they came back together specifically for this tribute. Much like the bands that will be playing at this Saturday's 70's Nightclub Reunion (cheap plug
).
Thanks, opso. DSLR camera + zoom lens + good lighting. Star studded lineup is right!
And that Hawaii Nei theater is awesome. Hope to see more performances there!
February 23rd, 2009 at 11:51 pm
Mahalo Rodney for sharing the link. I hope people feel like there were there with me.
Just a quick plug for better photo viewing, it's best to view the photos either with Firefox or Safari. Internet Explorer is some times hangs up. ENJOY!
February 24th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
It was indeed our pleasure to perform for Wayne on Sunday and when he is older, he will get the real significance of the "Trucker's Lament" song ("I just don't look good naked anymore.") Thanks for the great review of that CD single too, Wayne.
And mahalo to Advertiser photographer Rebecca Breyer and the photo editors for using that great picture of Carmen Haugen when she gave Wayne a lei and a hug.
Keith Haugen
Wayne's haole cousin
February 24th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
Rod,
Your awesome pic's brought back the essence of the event in a visual manner. With the efforts of Cha Thompson and her volunteers, the sold out show was a success in celebrating Wayne's retirement party. 100% of proceeds from the ticket sales all went to charity.
Mahalo for sharing your pics with others that weren't at the Haradawood event..
February 24th, 2009 at 8:36 pm
Alright! Got Augie's picture in there thanks to Rebecca Breyer of The Honolulu Advertiser.
Also, added a shot of Carmen Haugen sharing her aloha with Wayne. Click on Carmen's picture for more photos from The Honolulu Advertiser.
Thank you NoPaka and weclome to the Midlife Crisis blog.

Congrats to Wayne!! Mahalo to all who made this gigantic event happen. Mahalo especially to Cha, Noah, Derek, I'll never forget that Sunday. I saw only short pieces of the show but backstage was a show in itself. Everyone was happy to be part of this celebration for Wayne. It was like a high school reunion, baby luau, family reunion combination all wrapped into one. And mahalo to everyone who signed my shirt. Everyone was so friendly. I really appreciate it. Aloha and all good wishes to Wayne.
February 25th, 2009 at 9:11 am
This comment was sent by Derek but somehow didn't post. So I'll post it for everyone to see. (Rod)
Derek:
Please all...a lot of ALOHA was needed to pull all of the parts together. A sincere mahalo to Cha Thompson, John Tilton & Gloria Chung and all those that donated their time, talent & efforts to make this a memorable event.
February 25th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Aloha!
It was a great pleasure for me personally and for my band to have had the pleasure of sharing our music with Wayne one more time, and hopefully many more times to come (he no retire)...:=)
The event was the best show in Honolulu in decades!!
I was there I know...<
Mahalo Wayne Harada!
