Ala Moana Center Dillingham Plaques Found!

July 16th, 2008 by Rodney

We have a winner!

Remember the Dillingham plaques that I challenged you to find in the July 3rd entry?

NickInMoiliili knew he had seen those plaques before, it was just a matter of following his hunch to locate them.  Then he send me this on Monday:

Hi Rod,

Never being one to turn down a challenge… so those Dillingham Markers were just too tempting to pass up. Attached are the photos of our quest on Saturday to locate them. My wife and baby had fun and I knew the location (sort of) as I remember reading one of those markers a while back. I am convinced there are only three as the area around Macy’s was never re-tiled when Ala Moana went through one of its many renovations. I find that kind of odd as Sears on the Ewa end was re-tiled. Liberty House was an anchor tenant so that was a good place to start! You may use the photos on the blog if you wish but they are low resolution form my iPhone.

See the plaque at the bottom of the picture?

NickInMoiliili and family next to plaques.

As you can see, the plaques are located in front of Macy’s.  The large picture and the one with Nick is located on the mall level, diamond head side of Macy’s.  The picture with Nick’s wife and baby is one floor right below that - the street level, diamond head side.  And finally, the one were I took my picture of the plaque is also on the street level, but the mauka side - where the colognes are.  Go figure.

Way to go Nick!

btw, Nick passed on the 2 free Blockbuster rentals.  He did it just to follow his hunch and have a fun day out with the family.  Congratulations Nick!

Maybe if I can think up another contest, I can give away those free rentals.  How about it folks, any good contest ideas?

How about finding the oldest manhole cover in Honolulu? Way back when, as a UH fine arts student, we had a project where we had to make rubbings from manhole covers and as an incentive, a contest for the oldest one. I found one dated 1920’s I think, on Metcalf. I had go there late at night to avoid any traffic while making the rubbing.

  2. Ynaku:

Who can guess all the Cologne brands Rodney keeps on his dresser cause no room in the cabinet. :)

  3. anklebiters:

Have a kite-off…see who has the ‘bestest’ looking one…must be able to stay in the air. Hold it at a park….an excuse to ‘meet’ y’all.

  4. Goodbeer:

Number of colognes PLUS the number of pairs of shoes. Adds to the HO WOW!!! factor.

  5. snow:

Geez, you’d think as a former Liberty House employee and a frequent shopper, I’d have seen those things (apparently, I have other things on my mind!)???? Actually, I wen foget about da challenge, though… but, good job, Nick!!

Goodbeer, I no tink my brain can count dat high… ??!! (Ho, da bugga get mo shoes den me!!!?!)

We should guess the names of all your colognes and list your top five favorites (or, we have to put them all in your order of preference).

  6. BananaFish:

    Okay, Largo, I get ‘um.

We go play the game we were playing the other day, but with the song titles.

Your wife will have a song title pre-selected, and no tell you (so you can still play).

The person to hit the “secret song” gets the prize. Paula no need monitor all day, cause I think it’ll be fun to just play the game, and the prize is bonus. Maybe if she just check in once in a while, that would be cool. Unless, of course, she wants to play the game, then somebody else can pick the song and monitor. ;)

  7. hemajang:

that word game went over 200 comments, was good fun…a variation would be good.

  8. Goodbeer:

Hey BananaFish, my memory is really bad. I’ll pick the secret song, and I can still play (and probably not guess um).

  9. Rodney:

    Thank for the replies.

@hemajang, oldest manhole in Honolulu? Wow, we can get in trouble with that. Oh wait, oldest manhole cover! whew. Nah, I don’t want anyone to get in trouble. Did you hear that the latest thing (on the mainland) is people stealing manhole covers to sell as scrap metal? Now that is dangerous! I’m not just talking about the car needing to be realigned, but an open manhole can blow your time, bust your rim, screw up your suspension and cause you to lose control and whack something.
But in keeping with the Ala Moana theme, did anyone ever notice the old manhole covers at Ala Moana? Remember the old logo that was like an elongated target (for lack of a better description)? Some of the old Ala Moana manhole covers still have that logo. I should snap a picture or two of them. Let’s see…. where were they?

  10. Rodney:

Leave my colognes and shoes alone.

Because I don’t even know them all myself…

A song that Paula picks. Hmmm…. how good are you folks with songs from musicals?

Actually, I have another word game coming up tomorrow - or late tonight  Should be fun.

  11. Goodbeer:

Just read the breaking news…I hope you’re not one of those riffed.

  12. snow:

:( I hope you are not affected by the cuts! :(

  13. Kelli:

Something to do with Korean dramas.

  14. NKHEA:

Oh man I going on vacation from Friday, I going miss the game. Got fired the other day from playing the other word game so get plenty time to play now…..nah.. still get my job but really enjoyed the game….you noticed Rodney….start’um already…

  15. Goodbeer:

    You ok Rodney?

  16. Rodney:

    Hi everyone.

Thanks for your concern. I heard that all of those affected would’ve been informed by now so since I haven’t heard anything, I think I’m good. What a day…

  26. M:

  27. Melissa:

How about finding the landmarks on a map (created in the 50s or 60s, I think) at the top of Aloha Tower, and naming what’s not there anymore…or what has taken each’s place? You gotta see this map, it’s so retro!

  28. Melissa:

p.s. good to see you guys were spared. Maybe blogging is a safe pass!

  29. opso:
